TIFF Announces 2013 Midnight Madness Slate Posted: 30 Jul 2013 01:00 AM PDT It seems kind of fitting that I'm stumbling back to a keyboard well after midnight with thoughts about this year's Midnight Madness slate. In what has to be the most unique release done at the storied festival, programmer Colin Geddes chose a free screening of 2006's All The Boys Love Mandy Lane as the showcase to divulge this year's group of late night fare. The audience was treated to three exclusive trailers, which started with Rigor Mortis by Juno Mak, a slightly somber, wispy vampire movie. Next up was The Station, where the press notes facetiously refer to a bunch of researchers uncovering a "special juice". There was certainly a Austrian version of The Thing-like vibe, but we'll see how it plays out. Finally, we saw the... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Fantasia 2013 Review: BUSHIDO MAN Will Make You Hungry For More Posted: 29 Jul 2013 11:00 AM PDT Toramaru has spent the last year on a pilgrimage to obtain seven scrolls from seven masters of different martial art disciplines. Toramaru will fight masters of kung-fu, stick fighting, sword fighting, nunchaku, dagger, pistols and a very special weapon at the end. His master, Gensai, has taught him that he will know his enemy by what he eats. So before fists fly and blades clash, Toramaru sits down at local eateries and takes in a series of delicious meals. Toramaru tells the tales of each battle and believes his pilgrimage to be over and completed. But Gensai has one final lesson for his prized pupil. If any other movie during Fantasia had 'genuine crowd pleaser' written all over it, then Bushido Man just waltzed over, ripped it... UNDER THE DOME Inexplicably Renewed For Second Season Of Hate-Watching Posted: 29 Jul 2013 10:30 AM PDT The CBS television network has renewed Under the Dome for a second season, according to Deadline. Stephen King, whose 2009 novel serves as source material for the series, will write the first episode of Season 2. The first five episodes have demonstrated amply that things can go from bad to worse rather quickly in broadcast television. King's sprawling novel postulated that a huge, transparent dome of unknown origin cut off a small town in New England from the outside world, allowing good to battle evil for more than a thousand pages. In November 2012, CBS ordered 13 episodes of the series and announced plans to make it a summer television event. The network has not featured original content during this time period in the past,... RARE EXPORTS Director Will Play A BIG GAME With Samuel L Jackson Posted: 29 Jul 2013 10:00 AM PDT Back in 2010 when his Christmas themed horror film debut Rare Exports was making the rounds on the festival circuit I had the chance to meet writer-director Jalmari Helander and - of course - asked him what he wanted to do next. It didn't have a name at the time - at least not one he was willing to share - but Helander couldn't hold back a smile as he told me he was working on an idea that he described as 'Home Alone meets Rambo'. And thinking what that particular combination could result in in Helander's hands, it was pretty hard not to join in that smile.Well, the money has come together for that new project, production is scheduled to begin in September, a... Massive Scale Warfare In Second Trailer For Bondarchuk's STALINGRAD Posted: 29 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT I recall when I first heard the term 'bullet ballet' applied to the work of John Woo, critics making note of the way the Hong Kong action master cut his gun play sequences to music to give them a sort of grace and beauty amidst the insane levels of destruction. Well, if that was the case with Woo then what do we call what Russian director Fedor Bondarchuk is doing with his big budget 3D war epic Stalingrad - a film that appears to take those principals, amp them up by a full order of magnitude and then wed them to the aesthetic of films like 300?Bondarchuk is no stranger to these pages, his previous war effort The 9th Company making fans of us several... Fantasia 2013 Review: I'LL FOLLOW YOU DOWN Features An Emotional Time Travel Story Posted: 29 Jul 2013 06:00 AM PDT "When you alter gravity, you affect time." -- Albert Einstein At what point will a good story trump a pedestrian production? Richie Mehta the writer is one helluva thing, but Richie Mehta the director, well, he gets the job done, but at times comes dangerously close to breaking what is one of the best time travel screenplays, well, since Looper, anyway. I'll Follow You Down is both literally and thematically a pregnant title for a time travel flick that shows the hubris of the father visited on the son and jeopardizes the happiness and emotional stability of not one, but two, possibly even three families. It dwells on tangent universes, fuzzy mathematics, and keeping the parents together with their children (their very existence), thus merging... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
