DVD Review: HAKABA KITARO Offers Creepy Nostalgia Posted: 05 Aug 2013 04:00 AM PDT (This series sure doesn't make you want to poke your eye out.) In 2008, Fuji aired a very unusual eleven episode anime in their famed noitaminA slot. It was called Hakaba Kitaro, meaning "Graveyard Kitaro", the titular character of which had been part of Japan's cultural lexicon for decades already. At the same time, there was even a long-running anime being broadcast on a different network, starring the same character! So what was this guy doing on noitanimA? Normally that slot is reserved for anime aimed at an adult, art-house oriented audience, hardly where you'd expect such a mainstream icon. Now that Australian distributor Siren Visual has released Hakaba Kitaro on DVD, we can take a look. But first: who or what is this Graveyard... |
Masters Of Cinema To Release Ted Kotcheff's WAKE IN FRIGHT Posted: 05 Aug 2013 02:51 AM PDT Eureka Entertainment has announced its acquisition on Ted Kotcheff's 1971 Australian survival thriller Wake in Fright, for its Masters of Cinema label. Lost for many years following its debut at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival, Wake in Fright is the story of displaced teacher John Grant, stranded at a remote outpost in the Australian outback, who falls in with a particularly rowdy gang of locals who take him on a desperate odyssey of beer, gambling, beer, kangaroo-hunting, beer and even more beer. Eureka's new release of First Blood director Kotcheff's film, which stars Gary Bond and Donald Pleasance, will premiere at Film4 FrightFest in London at the end of this month, before embarking on a limited theatrical run across the UK. Wake in Fright... |
Korean Box Office: SNOWPIERCER Leads Biggest Weekend In Korea's History Posted: 04 Aug 2013 07:30 PM PDT This first weekend in August is always a busy time in Korea and though this one was poised to post massive figures, few could have foreseen just how big it would be. Roughly 4.5 million tickets were sold this weekend, the first time the Fri-Sun frame has ever crossed the 4 million mark in Korea. By comparison, last year's powerful The Thieves-led frame brought in 3.69 million viewers. Even better news was a strong 80% (versus 58% in 2012) local market share, driven by a pair of huge new domestic hits. Title Release Date Market Share Weekend Total Screens 1 Snowpiercer 13/07/31 50.50% 2,260,191 3,297,568 1127 2 The Terror Live 13/07/31 26.60% 1,195,345 1,836,450 742 3 Turbo (us) 13/07/25 7.60% 355,861 1,382,961 515 4 The Smurfs... |
Posted: 04 Aug 2013 06:30 PM PDT Dragon Ball is arguably the most popular anime in Mexico ever. When I asked Jorge Grajales, Asian cinema expert and film programmer, about the popularity of Dragon Ball in this country he kindly replied with these words: "From criminals' nicknames that you can see in the press, drawings in ice-cream shops, carousel figures, picture cards and toys in street markets, Dragon Ball has remained present within Mexican contemporary pop culture. At the time, it was Heidi, Girl of the Alps (the most popular anime in Mexico), with comic books, a music record and other similar productions; the strawberry-flavored Duvalin (a famous Mexican candy) came out originally with Heidi. But the furor that Dragon Ball had, for a generation that grew up at the same time... |
Peter Capaldi Is The 12th Doctor Posted: 04 Aug 2013 06:00 PM PDT Never has so much fuss and/or excitement been made -- either somewhat orchestrated by network execs or indeed genuinely from fans -- over the arrival of a new actor in the role of the Doctor on BBC's wildly popular Doctor Who. If David Tennant's tenth Doctor captured a whole new batch of fangirls (and boys), Matt Smith's eleventh eventually did much the same -- after, of course, a lot of fuss was made about Tennant leaving the role. Well, we knew it to been coming for a couple of months now, but Smith's exit will be happening in the 50th anniversary special of the show on November 23rd, which means we were gonna get wind of his replacement sooner rather than later. Announced during a... |
