Weinstein Thinks You Are Too Dumb For SNOWPIERCER

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 09:40 PM PDT

Once news broke that The Weinstein Company had acquired international rights to Bong Joon-ho's hotly anticipated Snowpiercer, it was perhaps inevitable that the film wouldn't make it to Western screens unscathed. It has now been revealed that Harvey Weinstein has ordered the revered Korean cineaste to cut a whopping 20 minutes from his film before it will see the light of day in North America, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand or the UK. The Sci-Fi blockbuster has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from Variety, Screen Daily, The Hollywood Reporter and right here at Twitch, and is currently smashing box office records following its release six days ago in its native Korea (to date a record 3.76 million admissions). So why does Weinstein want to cut it?...

Review: SKINS S7E06, RISE: PART 2 (Or, The Final Episode Ever Provides A Strong Send-off For Cook)

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 08:00 PM PDT

The second part of Cook's story in "Rise" is able to stay true to the character and provide him with a fitting conclusion, although the buildup to the final moments is notably less focused or coherent than last week's excellent establishing episode. Jack O'Connell is, once again, tremendous in the role. His performance very effectively conveys Cook's internal struggle, as the young man swings between the more mature presence that he's grown to be and the reckless boy he once was. Here, Cook is on the run and trying to protect both his girlfriend Emma and the alluring but manipulative Charlie from the wrath of her boyfriend, Louie, his dangerously unhinged employer. The episode again opens with Cook's voiceover, as he considers the effect that death...

Though the budget may have been small the epic scale of the adventures encountered by Steven Kostanski's Manborg were enormous and clearly the scope of his tale is far too large to be contained by a sole feature film. Indie Beat: 5 Most Intriguing Indies In August

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 02:00 PM PDT

Okay folks, let's get to it. Here are five independent features opening theatrically this August in the U.S. that just may be worth your attention and dollars. Two of the films I have seen, and the other three I am fairly eager or else very psyched to see. In addition, I've got a fascinating short documentary to share, plus a rundown of most of the other indie releases this month. If you live outside the U.S., what are the local titles you're most anticipating?           ...

Weird and Wonderful: The Cinema Of HOLY MOTORS Director Leos Carax

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 12:30 PM PDT

The Toronto International Film Festival is about to launch a retrospective celebrating the work of Holy Motors director Leos Carax, arguably the most important, or at least interesting, working French director. The director's triumphant return to the cinema with Holy Motors last year after a 13 year absence from feature filmmaking is indeed a cause for celebration, and a perfect opportunity to revisit his singular career. The TIFF retro will include all 5 of Carax's feature films: Boy Meets Girl, Mauvais Sang, Les Amants du Pont Neuf, Pola X and Holy Motors.Over the last 30 years, Carax has made only 5 features, along with a couple of shorts, music videos and some cameo appearances in other directors' films -- Jean-Luc Godard's King Lear (1987), Lituanian...

Penélope Cruz-Directed Lingerie Promo Deemed Too Risqué By YouTube

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Spanish actress Penélope Cruz recently donned the director's hat for the first time, and, in the process, fed the world of straight male fantasies a few more of the usual cliches. Lingerie client Agent Provocateur is probably happy with the promo spot, titled L'Agent (below), but Spanish daily El País says that YouTube is less thrilled -- they have censored the promo for being too explicit. The narrative is as straightforward as it gets: a man arrives at a party chock-full of long-legged women and lo and behold, when he puts on a special pair of L'Agent glasses, he's able to see right through the women's clothes to their lingerie. Spanish hunk/actor Miguel Ángel Silvestre and Russian model Irina Shayk appear, as does Cruz's heavily pregnant...

Fantasia 2013 Review: CURSE OF CHUCKY Is A Satisfying Old School Horror Ride

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

It's tough to bring an iconic character back to the screen. Every fan brings their own baggage that's been hardened under the weight of nostalgia. The fans see Freddy, Jason and all those other franchise slashers in very specific ways. Most of us just want to relive the goosebumps we experienced the first time around. We want to be freaked out by the burned dude that can kill us in our dreams, the big guy in the hockey mask and the talking doll with the big bloody knife. I'm no Chucky expert by any means. I liked original Child's Play and Bride of Chucky, but have nothing but vague memories of the other three. All I remember is that he reached a point where he...

Twitchvision: Jason Gorber Talks 2 GUNS, BLUE JASMINE and BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 08:30 AM PDT

Twitchvision is back after a week's hiatus, and Scott Laurie is back in the anchor chair. We chat about 2 Guns, directed by 101 Reykjavik's Baltasar Kormákur, a decent "Mexican Standoff" film with a refreshingly convoluted plot and fine performance by Bill "You should read my interview with him" Paxton. Also got a chance to gush about Wood Allen's Blue Jasmine, with a sublime performance by Cate Blanchett. Also chatted about a film that I went into with high expectations only to have them mildly dashed, the stylish but soul-less Barberian Sound Studio....

Melbourne 2013 Review: PATRICK Offers Safe Chills And Tame Thrills

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 08:24 AM PDT

Our midnight screening of Patrick, the passionate horror remake from Ozploitation devotee Mark Hartley (Not Quite Hollywood), began with an honest and slightly disconcerting preamble from the director: Patrick is an old fashioned Gothic chiller, with little time awarded for rehearsals and a first-time director of photography behind the camera.Patrick seems to have been a hard sell, but Hartley hit the ground running, and the film was efficiently and passionately made. Patrick heralds pure unpretentious genre cinema in Australia and while it is refreshing to see an Australian film that relies heavily on classic genre tropes, Patrick still lacks the insanity and energy required to keep its momentum.A newly hired nurse, Kathy (Sharni Vinson), is hired on the spot by the mysterious Doctor Roget (Charles Dance)...
