Finally! Here's The Official Trailer for STREET SOCIETY

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 07:30 PM PST

Street-racing Indonesian movie Street Society is heading to theaters next month, and we've got the first official trailer. Full of energy, the trailer provides a glimpse of the overall tone of the film and looks totally promising, especially for those who crave beautiful cars and the racing-movie genre. Here's the official synopsis: Cocky, charismatic and womanizing Rio (Marcel Chandrawinata) is the reigning champion of Indonesia's illegal street racing scene. Along with his friends -- tuning genius Monty (Daniel Topan), Balinese champion racer Gde (Yogie Tan), and the beautiful-yet-brash Nanda (Kelly Tandiono) -- Rio forms a speed-obsessed society, racing against fellow super car owners in exotic and beautiful locations across the country. Rio's archenemy is Nico (Edward Gunawan), the heavily-guarded heir to a Surabaya crime syndicate...

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST

Jeff Barnaby's gritty feature debut Rhymes For Young Ghouls begins its limited theatrical run in Canada on Friday - Toronto folk who want to see it will be able to find it at the Cineplex Yonge & Dundas - and to whet the appetite for those curious about why we've been so bullish on Barnaby for so long the producers have released Barnaby's previous, award winning short film File Under Miscellaneous online in its entirety.Nominated for a Genie award - Canad'a equivalent to the Oscars - this is a significantly different work than most of Barnaby's other films - Ghouls included - in that while most of his work is grounded in a very tangible reality this one takes us into a grim future. Now On DVD: AARDVARK Follows A Blind Man Into Danger

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 10:00 AM PST

A narrative-documentary hybrid, Aardvark follows a blind man named Larry who begins practicing Jiu-Jitsu. He befriends his trainer, named Darren, and soon finds himself pulled into a murky, film noir world of murderous intrigue. The film played on the festival circuit in 2011, where our own Ard Vijn saw it. In his review, he commented: Writer-director Kitao Sakurai ... made a fly-on-the-wall documentary about his blind friend Larry Lewis. Larry is a very likable guy with a friendly charisma and a no-nonsense attitude, both about his handicap and his drinking problem. Seeing him enlist for martial arts training and earning his first colored belt may not be particularly deep or enlightening, but it sure is easy to watch and the camaraderie on display is addictive....

British Movie Villains Advertise British Auto Company In Big Game TV Spot

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 09:30 AM PST

It's that time of year when giant corporations spend big bucks to advertise their wares on "The Big Game," aka the U.S. professional football championship whose official name dare not be spoken. No matter -- the advertisements are often the most fun to watch, and why not watch them now, without the tedium of watching large, uniformed men slamming into each other. Here, for example, is a spot featuring Ben Kingsley, Mark Strong, and Tom Hiddleston explaining why British actors are so much better at playing movie villains. It's as amusing and stylish as you might expect....

JOE Trailer: Restraint Keeps Nicolas Cage Alive - For Now

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST

A terrific new trailer for David Gordon Green's Joe features Nicolas Cage in restrained mode as a quiet man who is finally moved to action. About the titular character, our own Ryland Aldrich described him thusly: "An ex-con with a troubled past and a penchant for making people want to hurt him, Joe is trying to turn things around in his life. But Joe's life just doesn't seem to be cooperating with these new plans." (You can read Ryland's entire review from the Toronto International Film Festival right here.) The film also stars Tye Sheridan, who was excellent in Jeff Nichols' Mud. The trailer does a good job in setting up the premise and establishing a tense mood. Joe will be released in France on...

You Can Smell THE LUNCHBOX Trailer From Here

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 08:30 AM PST

It's probably a good thing that computers don't have Smell-O-Rama (yet), but I'd be willing to make an exception for this new trailer for The Lunchbox (original title, Dabba). "Set amid Bombay's dabbawallas -- who deliver thousands of lunchboxes sent by Bombay housewives to their husbands at the office -- Dabba is about an old-fashioned, but contemporary romance that grows entirely through notes in the lunchbox," wrote our reviewer Meenakshi Shedde. The film "is an exquisite, bittersweet ode to love and longing from India that makes your heart sing." (You can read the entire review here.) Ritesh Batra directed; the cast includes Irrfan Khan (Life of Pi), Nimrat Kaur (Peddlers) and Nawazuddin Siddique (Gangs of Wasseypur). The Lunchbox is scheduled to open in select theaters...

Sundance 2014 Review: The U.S. vs THE NOTORIOUS MR. BOUT Examines A "Merchant Of Death"

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST

The Pussy Riot documentary, Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer, had its world premiere last year at Sundance. The doc was co-directed by Russian filmmaker Maxin Pozdorovkin, who now is teamed with a different director (Tony Gerber), but returned to the same festival with another documentary that explores a polemical legal case. Meet Viktor Bout. Russian. Businessman. Video aficionado. And, apparently, the notorious Taliban-supporting arms trafficker who inspired the Nicolas Cage movie Lord of War and conspired to kill Americans in 2008. The Notorious Mr. Bout asks simple yet precise questions: Who is Bout? What lead to his 2008 arrest by the DEA? Is he really the so-called "Merchant of Death" who supported terrorists and deserves to be incarcerated? To find these answers, the documentarians present...

Water Floods First Teaser For Vietnamese Sci-Fi NUOC (2030)

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST

Today, the first teaser trailer for Vietnam sci-fi surprise Nước (2030) arrived on its official Facebook page. With more hints provided in the international poster, the trailer shows footage of two people swimming under the water. This is the first movie from Vietnam that shows a futuristic dystopia and (I assume) mostly will take place under the sea. From the official synopsis: It is the year 2030. Catastrophic climate change as a result of global warming means that most of the arable land in southern Vietnam is now below sea level. Most of the population has already been evacuated, but Sao and her husband Thi refuse to leave their land. They are living in a stilt house and subsisting on the dwindling fish population. On...

Review: THE SATELLITE GIRL AND MILK COW Shows Promise for Korean Animation

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST

There is no shortage of skilled animators in Korea, but following the floundering of the local animation industry in the 1970s, most of that talent went into domestic TV production or was sucked into the outsourced contracts of far more lucrative foreign shows such as The Simpsons. Over the last few years, a handful of new feature animations have cropped up in Korean cinema and are serving as embers for what will hopefully become a full-fledged industry in the coming years. Several Korean animations are in store for 2014, and the first of those to hit theaters will be The Satellite Girl and Milk Cow, the feature-length debut of Jang Hyung-yun, who previously made a number of acclaimed shorts, including A Coffee Vending Machine and...

Ha Jung-woo, Jun Ji-hyun, And Lee Jung-jae Circling 30s Thriller ASSASSINATION

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 06:30 AM PST

Korean hitmaker Choi Dong-hoon is back at it again with a new 1930s set action thriller purported to be in the $12 million budget range. Titled Assassination, the project is eyeing some big talent for leading roles. Ha Jung-woo, Jun Ji-hyun and Lee Jung-jae are also considering major parts in Choi's follow-up to The Thieves, the 2012 hit caper film that became the second most viewed Korean film of all time by accruing almost 13 million admissions domestically. Save for featuring an assassination plot that takes place in the 1930s, little has been revealed about the film's plot, yet the period setting and potentially huge cast in the sure hands of Choi is more than just a little tantalizing. Though adept at big spectacle, as...

IFFR 2014 Review: Miike Takashi's THE MOLE SONG - UNDERCOVER AGENT REIJI

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST

(Rest assured that people of the fashion police will leave the cinema in tears...) An International Film Festival Rotterdam without a Miike Takashi film is almost unthinkable. Ever since Audition screened, back in 1999, the eclectic director has sent a film Rotterdam-wards, and he often visits himself. I wouldn't be surprised if he will be made a honorary Rotterdammer sometime in the future. It helps that the man is prolific enough to be able to send stuff our way every year. This time, he has picked The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji, a manga adaptation. Miike has done more manga adaptations than regular directors have made movies, so he is on familiar grounds here. Fans showed up in droves, and a good time was had...
