The latest in a string of big budget all-star thrillers from Hong Kong's Edko Pictures, Firestorm stars Andy Lau as a senior police inspector determined to bring down a violent gang of robbers responsible for a string of violent heists across the city. Hu Jun plays the leader of the gang, and Gordon Lam and Cheung Siu Fai also star.Written and directed by Alan Yuen, best known for his script work in Benny Chan's New Police Story, Connected and Shaolin, Firestorm looks pretty spectacular from this first action-packed trailer, that promises "all-out war" on the streets of Hong Kong when it hits cinemas this December. Fantastic Fest 2013 Review: GOLDBERG & EISENBERG Is Chilly, Funny Stalker Tension

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 09:40 PM PDT

It's too soon to tell whether Oren Carmi is Israel's answer to the Coen brothers, whom he lists among his influences, but his debut feature, the darkly comic Goldberg & Eisenberg, shows promise. I get the impression that a grim sense of humor is crucial to one's survival in Tel Aviv, and Carmi clearly has that going for him, even if some of the other elements of his film are a bit uneven. Goldberg (Yitzhak Laor) is a nebbish, a timid freelance computer programmer who is eager -- nay, desperate -- to find a girlfriend, and is going about it systematically with the various online dating sites. While waiting to meet a date one evening in the park, he is approached by Eisenberg (Yahav Gal),...

Edwin Will Explore War, Sex, Desire And Betrayal In EXOTIC PICTURES.

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 04:30 PM PDT

The Indonesian director known as (just) Edwin has started on a Dutch-Indonesian co-production called Exotic Pictures. Working from a script by himself and Marco van Geffen, Edwin will look at, and I quote from the press notes by production company Lemming Film: "...the long and suppressed history between the Dutch and the Indonesians through war, sex, desire and betrayal." The renowned filmmaker, who won multiple awards with his previous features Blind Pig Who Wants To Fly and Postcards From The Zoo, is currently studying at the Dutch Film Academy, where his subject is "porn and history". Sounds like he's the right man for this job! The story of Exotic Pictures takes place on the Indonesian island of Bali during the forties and fifties, and will...

Trailer for DOM HEMINGWAY Offers A Lambchopped Jude Law

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 03:30 PM PDT

Jude law is Dom Hemingway.  And you are not.  In a similar vein as Chopper, Bronson and Sexy Beast, this often droll, occasionally gonzo, but compulsively watchable gangster yarn shows Law as an angry but funny thug who is looking for a payday after doing some hard time for his betters.  Plus Withnail himself, Richard E. Grant at his hang-doggiest, is on hand as Hemingway's dapper dressed sidekick. Watch for Grant's reaction shots in the trailer below, and you will get a sense of just how great he is in the film.  Also, Game of Thrones' "Mother of Dragons" Emilia Clarke shows up briefly playing Hemingway's estranged daughter.  Like most trailers, this one is a bit spoilerific of some of the films key gags, but having...

Watch Me Eat My Shirt. Mmm, Tasty.

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 03:30 PM PDT

So ... back on September 5th, after viewing Sono Sion's Why Don't You Play In Hell, I wrote a review that started like this:Mark my words: If another film brings even half the level of lunacy to the Toronto International Film Festival's Midnight Madness lineup as does Sono Sion's Why Don't You Play In Hell, I will eat my shirt. Literally. I will cut up the shirt I am wearing right now - which I quite like, incidentally - I will cook it into a stew, and I will eat it.The problem with writing things like this, of course, is that sometimes people read them. And also that setting the bar at only fifty percent means not setting it remarkably high. And so, upon watching...

Review: TSURITAMA Is An Anime Series About Fishing, Friendship And Feeling Happy

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Is fishing your favorite sport? It certainly isn't mine. Therefore if I knew beforehand that Tsuritama is a fishing anime, I probably wouldn't have even started watching it. But I am really thankful that I didn't know, because it has turned out to be a funny, charming and immensely enjoyable series. Yes, there are many fishing scenes, but these are done in an interesting way and there is a lot more to this anime than just fishing.  It is also about friendship - a group of young people who are completely different from each other who eventually develop a common love for fishing. Those young people are an unusual bunch: Yuki is a boy who has never had any close friends because of the need...

Fear & Loathing at Fantastic Fest 2013/2009, Part 3. The Important Things We Forget, the Stupid Things We Remember

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 02:00 PM PDT

CHAPTER 7: FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS. FAILURE & SELF ENTITLEMENT or LIFE AFTER FILM SCHOOLWithin the film world, there are essentially five categories of people. There are the chosen few, those needles in the haystacks fortunate enough to find success, financially and creatively. There are the grunts, the workmen who are almost just as lucky to have found their way into some niche trade within the field that may afford them stable employment, but offers absolutely zero personal satisfaction. And then there are the has beens, the almost some bodies, and the never wases who cling on to the scene like wet shit to a hairy ass crack. You'll find all five at any given film festival, but the latter three always outnumber the first by...

Fantastic Fest 2013 Review: NOTHING BAD CAN HAPPEN Is Powerfully Haunting

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Faith is a funny thing. Anyone can have it. You don't have to be smart. You can be utterly brilliant. Mature. Immature. It really doesn't matter. The point is that if you have it, it's yours. It literally belongs to you, to do with as you please. Katrin Gebbe has made a movie about a certain kind of faith, the kind that is powerful to carry someone through difficulty, self sacrifice, loneliness. Whether the character whose faith is in question is wise or unwise, is up to viewers to decide. The character's faith is not. Or rather, the character's faith is absolute.Tore is a young man, an epileptic, whose presumably broken past has led him to a small group that calls themselves the Jesus Freaks....

Fantastic Fest 2013 Review: ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW Presents Disney World As Hell With Remarkable Power

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 10:00 AM PDT

Director Randall Moore insists that his movie was never intended to be understood as a guerrilla project and I believe him. His claim, a very credible one, is that he knew that Disney World was the only and obvious choice of location for his story. So he simply opted to shoot the necessary footage there. There are so many things going on in Escape From Tomorrow that it seems like some impossible life's work project, something that could be tinkered with eternally. Yet in it's present form it already has a keen thematic edge and exploits it's central conceit, Disney World as hell, with remarkable power. Whatever flaws are here, and there are a few, it offers a disturbing peeling back of the veneer of commercially...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Talks DON JON And Comparing Real Life To Pornographic Fantasies

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 09:01 AM PDT

I am terrible at starting conversations with strangers, especially strangers I've seen masturbate, but, fortunately, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is very good at interviews. Don Jon showcases his skills as a triple threat: he wrote, directed, and stars as the titular character, a man who is not as grown up as he thinks he is. The movie is funnier and less sordid than might be expected when the lead character is someone who is obsessed with masturbating to pornography. He's not the only one with a personal obsession, though, as he discovers when he begins dating Barbara (Scarlett Johansson), a strong-willed woman with her own ideas about happiness, and then later becomes friends with Esther (Julianne Moore), a sensible woman dealing with multiple issues. One night in...

Hey, Mexico City! Win Tickets To See The Documentary EL PACIENTE INTERNO (THE CONVICT PATIENT)!

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 07:30 AM PDT

Alejandro Solar's El Paciente Interno (The Convict Patient) is one of the best Mexican films I have seen this year. A documentary telling the little-known story of the man (Carlos Castañeda) who tried to kill former Mexico president Gustavo Díaz Ordaz in 1970, two years after the Tlatelolco student massacre. While certainly political, Solar's film is extremely human as well and it sure will impress you. The Convict Patient was part of the official selection of such film festivals as Morelia, Guadalajara and Hot Docs. Now it's finally opening in Mexico on Friday, October 4, and Twitch takes you to its Mexico City premiere! Thanks to CUEC-UNAM and Cinestesia, we have fifteen individual passes. To get one, all you've to do is email me your...
