SPL 2: Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa Are Out? Soi Cheang To Direct And Wilson Yip To Produce Posted: 12 Sep 2013 10:00 PM PDT Donnie Yen has announced that he will not star in SPL 2 but won't rule out the possibility of a cameo appearance. Because of commitments to two other projects, Dragon City and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2, he will not be available. Wilson Yip, director of the first SPL film, will return as a producer of the project. Soi Cheang, director of solid action films like Dog Bite Dog, Accident and Motorway, will take over the helm. He recently completed production on Monkey King with Donnie Yen which is why Yen may make a cameo in this film. Sammo Hung, Wu Jing, Andy On and Francis Ng are still attached to the project. It has been suggested that the second film will be a prequel.... |

Watch: Matt Damon And Lilly Collins Meet Daniele Rizzo As "Sam" And The Wolfster, Respectively Posted: 12 Sep 2013 03:00 PM PDT It's ain't easy being The Wolfster. Or "Sam," for that matter. Our friend, actor and comedian Daniele Rizzo, likes to dress up in full makeup and costume for his interviews with actors and filmmakers promoting their latest releases in Europe. And so he dressed up as "Sam" for Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley, and Neill Blomkamp (Elysium). For Lilly Collins and Jamie Campbell Blower (The Mortal Instruments), he appeared as "Wolfgang, aka The Wolfster." I always love the spontaneous reactions of the interview subjects when they see Daniele come walking through the door. Damon has fun with it -- note what happens near the end when he's asked if he has any message for the future Jimmy Kimmel -- and so does Copley, who turns savagely... |
Exclusive: SKINWALKER RANCH, Poster And Clip Debut For Sci-Fi Thriller Posted: 12 Sep 2013 02:00 PM PDT Inspired by true events, Devin McGinn's Skinwalker Ranch is set in and around the titular location in northeasern Utah, U.S.A. Allegedly, mysterious orbs, UFOs, "giant wolf-like creatures," and livestock mutilation have been reported in the area for years. The film begins with the disappearance of a rancher's 8-year-old son, whereupon a team of investigators descend, and things escalate from there. We've got an exclusive clip that gets in and out pretty quickly and effectively, teasing as it goes, as well as the first look at the poster and several stills. Jon Gries, Kyle Davis, Steve Berg and Devin McGinn star; the film is heading to theaters nationwide on October 30. Assuming, that is, that "they" don't get us before then ...... |
Review: INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2 Teeters On The Edge Of Horror Hokum Posted: 12 Sep 2013 01:00 PM PDT Less nerve-jangling than nerve-nudging, Insidious: Chapter 2 nontheless tweaks horror conventions with verve and surety of craft, taking the sequel into the realm of confrontational thrillers with a supernatural twist. It is a very bizarre realm, indeed. James Wan has directed a string of genre movies since Saw in 2004, including 2010's Insidious, and has clearly learned a thing or two. 'Chapter 1' set up a wild premise in which a child falls into a long coma, only for his parents to learn that he has actually traveled through astral projection to a sinister realm referred to as The Further that coexists with the known world. The main action of the sequel begins immediately after the apparent resolution of that situation. Josh and Renai Lambert... |
TIFF Review: WE GOTTA GET OUT OF THIS PLACE Is A Smart Slice Of Small-Town Noir Posted: 12 Sep 2013 12:00 PM PDT The feature debut from directorial siblings Simon and Zeke Hawkins is a tense and earthy film noir that wears its pulp influences proudly on its sleeve as it weaves a tale of love, betrayal and escape through the underbelly of the barren Texas wilderness. From its opening moments, We Gotta Get Out Of This Place - the first feature from the New York City-born Hawkins brothers - declares its love for hard-boiled crime writer Jim Thompson (the man responsible for such noir classics as The Getaway and After Dark, My Sweet). A young couple hanging out in a diner momentarily discuss the correct vernacular for traditional southern cooking, before turning their attentions to the merits of the acclaimed pulp fiction author himself. While they may appear to... |

Slovak Shorts: Why A Folk Star, PIG STAR, And Suicidal PANDAS Won Awards Posted: 12 Sep 2013 09:00 AM PDT Slovak film productions are not solely fixed on features and docs. A considerable part of national production belongs also to shorts. Although there is a small prejudice that shorts are made by students or recent students to learn the craft, the quality suggests otherwise. Last year, several "small films" swept a fistful of international awards, a great example being the intriguing documentary Arsy-Versy, made by Miro Remo, which swooped up more than 35 awards all over the globe. It's a doc short about a man living differently than the majority of the nation. A similar destiny was shared by short animation The Last Bus by Ivana Laučíková and Martin Snopek, which stirred a bit of controversy in Slovakia over the question of whether stop-motion technique... |
Opening In Mexico: Adam Wingard's YOU'RE NEXT Posted: 12 Sep 2013 08:30 AM PDT Adam Wingard's You're Next is opening in Mexican cinemas on Friday, September 13, only three weeks after its North American release (and two years after its premiere at TIFF!). You're Next was previously screened in Mexico at the Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF) 2013, as part of the horror selection exhibited at two different graveyards. Now it comes with a lot of buzz, including the praise of Fede Alvarez and Quentin Tarantino. Twitch's Kurt Halfyard saw it way back in 2011. Here's an extract from his review: "Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett professed, maybe a bit tongue in cheek, at its North American premiere that their intent with You're Next was to make a tight little genre thrill ride that mashed together the opening scene of the... |
TIFF 2013 Review: COLD EYES Looks To The Best For Inspiration Posted: 12 Sep 2013 08:00 AM PDT Korean thrillers have earned a reputation for consistency over the years and, though there may only be a few great ones, the majority of them are solid efforts. However, we've come to expect a lot of the same tropes as a result of this consistency, so much so that they have begun to feel too familiar over time. One of the latest offerings from the genre is Cold Eyes, which set the stage for a summer full of Korean thrillers (others included Snowpiercer, The Terror Live, The Flu and Hide and Seek). With an innovative approach to location filming in Seoul and featuring three stars playing against type, Cold Eyes may seem familiar, but it's also a fresh and exciting addition to the genre. A... |
SPECIAL IDENTITY: Watch John Salvitti's Behind The Scenes Video With Donnie Yen Posted: 12 Sep 2013 07:30 AM PDT Martial artist and action choreographer John Salvitti has released a behind the scenes video of himself working with Donnie Yen on the upcoming Hong Kong action flick Special Identity. It is a sequence of quick cuts from staging the fights to filming them. It is cool to see the transition from rehearsal to filming and you also get a sense of how insane the fighting is going to be in this film. It is a return to the style of action that turned heads when their work together on Flash Point brought MMA and Jujitsu disciplines to the big screen and dropped some elbows onto heads. In his description of this video, John wrote:Special Identity work behind the scenes by John Salvitti as a dedication to mentor... |
Fear & Loathing At TIFF 2013, Part 3: Because I Got High, Because I Got High, Because I Got High Posted: 12 Sep 2013 07:00 AM PDT CHAPTER 6: 16 OUNCES OF BEEF, 8 OUNCES OF BOURBON, 6 OUNCES OF CANNABIS, TWO MEN & 1 PREPAID PHONE. Somehow, my father and I have found our way to the shady side of Toronto, or at least, as shady as Toronto can get. I don't know where we are exactly or what this area of town is called, but we're sitting down in the greasiest of greasy spoon diners called Dangerous Dan's. Everything inside of this place is sticky. The floors are sticky, the walls are sticky, the tables and seats, all sticky. It's small, loud, and uncomfortably congested with people. This place is supposedly well known for their burgers, a popular go-to haunt for party people looking to sober up and soak up... |
