Rock Hudson was in the midst of a successful multi-season run as the lead in television series McMillan and Wife when his co-star Susan St. James left the show. Perhaps sensing the writing on the wall -- the show would last only one more season -- Hudson took the starring role in 1976's Embryo, a thriller with science fiction and horror elements. Review: Animated Short SNOW Exudes A Genuine Melancholy And Magic

Posted: 06 Oct 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Twitch has already reported on the recent Slovak wave of award winning shorts. The wave keeps rolling and a new short sees the light of day. Given the country´s size, the animation scene is not so vast so the names keep repeating. Snow is helmed by Ivana Šebestová who emerged on the local scene with her master thesis Four, which harnessed a handful of accolades on the festival circuit. And she has not been idle ever since. Šebestová has lent her helping hand to colleagues on various projects, one of which was the animated short musical Stones directed by Katarína Kerekesová (several awards in the pocket as well). Snow has already made the festival rounds and is now being screened at home on the Slovak...

New York Film Fest 2013 Review: ABUSE OF WEAKNESS Turns The True Story Of A Conman's Swindle Into Fascinating But Frustratingly Opaque Art

Posted: 06 Oct 2013 01:30 PM PDT

In 2004, French director Catherine Breillat, famous for making very personal and sexually provocative films such as 36 Fillette (1988), Romance (1999), and Fat Girl (2001), suffered a debilitating stroke caused by a cerebral hemorrhage. This stroke partially paralyzed her and caused epileptic seizures, requiring a long hospital stay and a lengthy period of physical therapy. When Breillat had recovered enough to return to work - although she was still very dependent on others to get around and for other basic tasks - she began with a project called Bad Love, based on her own novel. Supermodel Naomi Campbell had been cast as the female lead, and for the male lead, Breillat decided to cast Christophe Rocancourt, a notorious conman she saw giving an interview...

Guillermo del Toro Opens Up His Private CABINET OF CURIOSITIES

Posted: 06 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT

Oh for joy! If I had one single Halloween wish, it would be to hang out with one of my favorite living directors, Guillermo del Toro, and be given free reign to run around his creative headquarters, known as Bleak House. I can think of nothing more fun than being given free reign to play with all his crazy cool stuff, and peruse his many private notebooks, which are full of illustrations and notes pertaining to his work in film, and otherwise. The man is a maelstrom of creative energy, and the lightning bolts that constantly strike out from his imagination are a continuous joy to me, and now much of that hair raising, eyeball frying goodness has been captured, gathered, and contained within the pages...

The Kids Talk Film: GRAVITY

Posted: 06 Oct 2013 11:00 AM PDT

You have read a lot of positive things about Alfonso Cuarón's immersive action picture Gravity in these parts, but how, you ask, would young children react to the prospect of two handsome astronauts problem solving their way out of a tight spot in space? Willem (age 10) and Miranda (age 8) are back to offer you this unusual perspective and talk about perseverance, suspension of disbelieve and the prospects of a future career in space exploration. They do get a bit *SPOILERY* at times, so there is your warning. In Dolby Atmos, nobody could hear them scream...Twitch has been on the Internet so long that many of its writing staff have children old enough to understand and consume media in a way that is both raw and fresh. It might...

Review: Joel Ferrer's HELLO, WORLD Has Too Much Fun, But Too Little Emotional Heft

Posted: 06 Oct 2013 10:01 AM PDT

We all were once invincible. High with puberty, we were indestructible with our first time sexual encounters, super secret crushes, and truckloads of alcohol. We talked with flair, mouthing fad words that are strange to adult ears. We walked with a peculiar bounce, carrying an imaginary heft while displaying our newly minted moustaches and Adam's Apples. Then adulthood happened. After several years of discovering our meager places in the largely frustrating adult world, we conjured something called nostalgia. Nostalgia momentarily brought us back to that time when we all were invincible. Only now, armed with the realities of the world, the past was something as silly as a standard sitcom. Joel Ferrer's Hello, World is bursting with nostalgia. It examines the typical and uneventful coming-of-age of...

New York Film Fest 2013 Review: Joanna Hogg's EXHIBITION, Exceptional 'Scenes From A Marriage'

Posted: 06 Oct 2013 09:00 AM PDT

British filmmaker Joanna Hogg, along with Mexico's Fernando Eimbcke, has been chosen for FSLC's The Emerging Artists Program, part of this year's New York Film Festival. They are playing all three feature films by her, the latest being Exhibition. Having recently discovered her films and impressed by her talent in portraying human (dis)connections related to specific environments, I was eagerly awaiting her new film. Complex yet subtle, innovative yet basic, it's absolutely one of the best films I've seen at the festival.A three-story modern house is just as much a character in Joanna Hogg's Exhibition as a married artist couple (played by non actors - Viv Albertine of the punk rock band Slits and artist Liam Gillick) who inhibit it. Equipped with floor to ceiling...
