Busan 2013 Review: THE FAKE Is a Bleak and Devastating Experience Posted: 04 Oct 2013 03:00 AM PDT -thumb-200x200-42631.jpg) Terrible things happen all the time but it's easy to ignore what goes on around us. Sometimes, we even fail to see what's right in front of us. Independent films, at least those with a realistic bent, frequently attempt to educate us by plainly showing the realities of the world we live in but they don't always move us the way filmmakers would like us to. Sometimes it's the fault of poor storytelling, mise-en-scene or acting, but more often than not, the fault lies with us. Among the reasons that we avoid what is plain to see is the diluted effect of these narratives, after decades of similarly minded cinema. In 2011, the young Korean animation director Yeun Sang-ho burst onto the scene with The... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
F The Whales, Help Save The Tower Theater In Salt Lake City! Posted: 03 Oct 2013 04:00 PM PDT When I first moved to Salt Lake City a year ago, many of my friends and cohorts lamented the fact that a cinephile like myself was not going to be in a major market area, where seeing something besides the latest Transformers sequel or fart-humor comedy would be an impossibility. This was far from the truth though, and after meeting some of the fine folks at the Salt Lake Film Society, quickly found out about theaters like The Broadway in the downtown district. In an area called Sugarhouse, which is a quaint and picturesque neighborhood rife with independent record shops, coffee houses, a wonderful used bookstore, is the wonderful and venerable Tower theater. It's 80 year existence is now in serious danger as the staff and... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Blue Collar Hero Takes A Coffee Break In First Teaser For Filipino Tokusatsu Comedy BLUE BUSTAMANTE Posted: 03 Oct 2013 01:00 PM PDT Though the premise will certainly draw comparisons to recent - and much higher budgeted - Taiwanese effort Machi Action, there's a definite charm to the first teaser for Miko Livelo's CinemaOne Originals project Blue Bustamante. A comedy revolving around an out of work Filipino overseas worker who somehow lands a gig playing a superhero on Japanese television there's an appealing blue collar ethic to this, the sets and suits clearly all hand made, while the story taps into an underlying reality of life in the Philippines - namely that the country's most visible export is its people. The teaser is brief and - unfortunately - not subtitled, but it's a winner. Take a look below.... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Donut Cat Is Itchy. Posted: 03 Oct 2013 12:30 PM PDT Yes, the apocalypse has come and gone and Donyatsu - the part cat / part donut - is itchy. Don't even try to make logical sense of anything here, just roll with it.... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Review: THE SUMMIT, An Engrossing Real-Life Tale Of Mountain Climbing And The Death Zone Posted: 03 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT Documentaries aren't always the most obviously cinematic features, and aside from a few breakouts from the likes of Michael Moore or Werner Herzog, are unfairly given short shrift theatrically. There's still that small-screen association for most cinema-goers, lured away by the comfort of escapist fiction. So when things like the visceral Senna or TT 3D: Closer to the Edge gain momentum, it's a minor triumph for the perennial box office underdog. I can understand lacking the drive to catch Into The Abyss on a bloody great cinema screen, but when an epic vista-laden doc like The Summit comes along, it's well worth catching on the largest screen you can find. Nick Ryan's documentary attempts to piece together the extraordinary events in August 2008 that saw... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Review: WADJDA, A Young Girl's Quest For A Bicycle Unveils Saudi Arabian Society Posted: 03 Oct 2013 11:01 AM PDT From Vittorio De Sica to Pee-wee Herman, bicycles have been a source of motivation and inspiration for film artists who want their characters to take a journey of discovery. The latest example is the titular character in Haifa Al-Mansour's Wadjda, a willful Saudi girl, all of 10 years of age, who sets her sights on buying a bicycle so she can race her childhood friend Abdullah. No matter that bicycles are not 'toys for girls' in modern Saudi Arabia, according to everyone from Abdullah to the toy shop owner to Ms. Hussa, the stern principal of Wadjda's school, to Wadjda's own mother, a devout Muslim who believes that riding a bicycle will cause a woman to lose her virginity. Wadjda marries a time-honored Hollywood storyline... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Review: Dario Argento's DRACULA 3D Is Predictably Bad, Until... Posted: 03 Oct 2013 10:30 AM PDT Early warning: This review will eventually spoil what was -- for me -- the only great minute of Dario Argento's Dracula 3D. It is not a plot spoiler per say, and it was also spoiled by the sales reel that showed up online a couple years ago, but it is the only moment that made me sit up in my seat and say, "What on earth...?" But, I'll put a warning before I do that, so relax for now. Other than this minute, there's not much to say about the former horror maestro's first foray into stereoscopic 3-D. Art and experience has shown in many ways that we are born an infant who needs to be taken care of, we mature, and then as our... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Say Hello To Edgar Wright's ANT-MAN Posted: 03 Oct 2013 10:30 AM PDT Who's the man in the suit? It would appear the time has come for speculation to begin in earnest where Edgar Wright's Ant-Man is concerned. Having freshly concluded his press obligations for The World's End, Wright tweeted yesterday that he was back in LA and that it was 'time to finish a little something he'd been working on.' Included was this photo, which is clearly of Marvel superhero Ant-Man in his suit. Now, the general feeling is that this is most likely from the test reel Wright shot earlier - the reel that actually got the film green lit - but with the man now actively in pre-production we should expect more soon. Check the full image below and remember you can click to enlarge.... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Santiago 2013 Review: EL ALCALDE (The Mayor) Is The Perfect Portrait Of Fascism Posted: 03 Oct 2013 10:00 AM PDT Mauricio Fernández Garza is the mayor of the municipal territory of San Pedro Garza García, one of the richest in Mexico, where the wealthiest people of the country come to live, not only because other people like them live there, but because it's also the safest region of the country since 2009, when Mauricio took office. Coincidence? Of course not! In the opening the fminutes of this documentary we see news footage of how the mayor defends his town and even asks for criminals (mostly drug lords) to come to San Pedro, kidnap and/or kill anyone. Obviously, it happens, someone gets killed, but within 24 hours the criminal isn't captured, but is simply found dead in the streets. Who killed him? The mayor doesn't tell... The David Fincher Adaptation Of Charles Burns' BLACK HOLE Is Back On The Agenda Posted: 03 Oct 2013 09:30 AM PDT Black Hole is back on. And David Fincher is still directing. Assuming, of course, that someone can come up with the money.Charles Burns' acclaimed graphic novel has been one of the great 'unadaptable books' that fans have lusted to see an adaptation of over the decade or so that it has taken to rise to prominence. Considered unadaptable not because of structural or technical issues - the story is straightforward enough and all of the technical demands can be easily met with current technology - the story has been considered untouchable for years because it fuses graphic sex and violence - plus bizarre mutations triggered by an STD - amongst high school kids. It's just like real life, basically. The thorny subject matter hasn't stopped people... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Opening: GRAVITY Astounds And Thrills And Chills And Astounds Again Posted: 03 Oct 2013 09:00 AM PDT So you want to be an astronaut? Alfonso Cuarón's gripping, often spectacular thriller Gravity sends George Clooney and Sandra Bullock flying into space, where they encounter every explorer's worst nightmare, the deadly kind you can't hope to control, but can only pray you can somehow survive through luck, nerve, and training. The film made the rounds at select festivals to a hail of accolades last month, including a very positive notice by Twitch's Jason Gorber, reporting from Toronto: No words can truly express the experience of Gravity. For the film truly is an experience like no other; a supreme example of deft storytelling merged with astonishing imagery. I'll provide my own hyperbole here: In many ways, Gravity is the film that cinema was born to... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Review: THE DIRTIES Is One Of The Smartest, Most Empathetic Looks At School Violence In All Of Cinema Posted: 03 Oct 2013 08:00 AM PDT Can you laugh with the boy holding the gun? The short answer is, "Yes." The slightly longer answer is, "Quite a lot, but with a hell of a caveat." And the longest answer is the rest of this review. Looking like the freshest-faced 16-year old you could imagine, Canadian filmmaker Matt Johnson crab-walked, moon-walked -- or maybe he was doing the robot -- onto the internet scene with the out-there, faux-documentary web series Nirvana The Band The Show. The Dirties is his first feature, in which he also stars as... Matt Johnson. Matt and his buddy Owen Williams (Owen Williams) play high school film geeks who are the target of a group of bullies they dub 'The Dirties.' As a way to cope with the... Opening: PARKLAND, A Refreshingly Original Take On The Death Of JFK Posted: 03 Oct 2013 07:00 AM PDT As a resident of Dallas, Texas, for more than seven years, the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy has taken on deeper meaning than it did before I moved here. Dealey Plaza, where the president was shot on November 22, 1963, is now a familiar sight from multiple personal visits, The Texas Theatre, where Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested, has become a favorite stomping ground in its current incarnation as a well-programmed repertory house and special events location. Thus, my considerable interest in Parkland, a film about the events of that day. It screened at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, and our own Jason Gorber filed a review: The film is episodic in its construction, following the many lives that were shaped...
