Busan 2013 Review: Personal and Subdued PASCHA Resonates Posted: 05 Oct 2013 03:00 AM PDT Life has a habit of moving on, whether we'd like it to or not. Moments of joy are fleeting and even our most crushing lows are washed away by the waves of time. Our present always leaves us, replaced to perpetuity with new realities: it's gone but never quite forgotten. The new Korean indie Pascha shows us that small moments can be hard to bare and smaller ones still may often be worth cherishing, but it also reminds us that nothing every truly disappears, particularly when it concerns (what else?) love. Anyone who has kept an eye on Korean cinema over the last few years will likely have encountered more than his or her fair share or bleak narratives, particularly in the independent realm. Though... Watch The Astounding Trailer For Argentinian SciFi UNDERLAND: THE LAST SURFACER Posted: 04 Oct 2013 02:00 PM PDT Just in case the rapid rise of Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez - who jumped straight to making studio features on the strength of his Uruguayan short film Panic Attack - was not enough to convince you that things are changing rapidly in Latin America, here's another name to make the point. Gonzalo Gutierrez. Remember it, because you're going to be hearing it a lot more in the near future. An Argentinian VFX artist and director, Gutierrez has freshly released a trailer / proof of concept reel for an epically scaled science fiction project titled Underland: The Last Surfacer. At least it certainly appears to be epic in both scale and budget but the reality is that Gutierrez shot it in only three days on a... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
New To Netflix: Snipers! Spies! Trains! Tentacles! and The End of the World Posted: 04 Oct 2013 01:00 PM PDT Another lovely week in the world streaming media sees a mixture of highbrow and lowbrow, old and new, stylized and playful entries in territories around the world. Sean Connery asks for a dead cat. Jude Law looks for both a pharmaceutical scam in trying times as well as through a snipers rifle in World War II. The dawn, and still best examples of Shaky Camera comes from Paul Greengrass. Lars Von Trier's exquisite use of slow motion, vérité camera work and subjective cinema. And a fun Irish creature feature in the vein (and tentacle) of Tremors. ... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Eric Lim Battles Tokusatsu Monster With Science In SECONDARY EDUCATION Posted: 04 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT We've long been fans of Eric Lim in these parts, the multi-talented man about town - he seems to fill different roles in pretty much every project he's involved with - first coming to our attention as producer of the brilliant tokusatsu themed indie short Zero Trooper F what seems like an eternity ago. And he's back again, this time as star of director Jon Truei's Secondary Education - a short film that fuses tokusatsu influences with the After School Special.Three high school students are forced to make up a chemistry test during after school detention. Over the course of the afternoon, they discover that their Chemistry teacher, Eugene Yamamoto, has been leading a secret double life as a crime-fighting Power Ranger. When an escaped... Spanish Trailer for Mindscape Reveals a Dark & Creepy Thriller Posted: 04 Oct 2013 11:00 AM PDT Jorge Dorado's feature film debut, Mindscape, will be screening at the Sitges film festival shortly, and a Spanish trailer has been released. Starring Mark Strong, Brian Cox, and Taissa Farmiga, Strong plays a psychic who can enter people's memories. He's assigned to look into a case involving a teenage girl, who might have been the victim of a traumatic event, or possibly a sociopath. The trailer is well-cut, shows some pretty scary images, and some key points of the story to make it very intriguing. In an interview with Spanish film magazine Fotogramas, Strong said that the film is "a classic detective story, with some science-fiction elements." Dorado cited films such as Vertigo and Chinatown as inspirations, and said that the film is a kind of... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Interview: Stranger Than Fiction, Jia Zhangke Talks A TOUCH OF SIN Posted: 04 Oct 2013 10:00 AM PDT A Touch of Sin is an anomaly for Jia Zhangke. Or at least it feels like it. Known for his unique melding of documentary and fiction, observing China's transformation with a critical eye and nostalgia, here he bases the film on four different recent news flashes. The first half tells of gritty, violent, senseless killing sprees, the second half turns a little giddy in its style with dramatic shifts. The fact that they are based on real events adds another layer to this sprawling, ambitious film. Interesting to note that Jia's version of real life events veer dangerously toward glossy fiction. I had the privilege of talking to him on the phone while he was in town for this year's New York Film Festival.Twitch: First... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Review: RUNNER RUNNER, Flush With Hollywood Contrivances Posted: 04 Oct 2013 09:30 AM PDT Oh, Hollywood. Just as festival season wraps up for us here in Toronto, you give us this false sense that things are all good in the cinematic world. Last week gave us Rush, this week Gravity, two extraordinary films, among the best of this or any other year. And then, crushingly, we're reminded of the usual dreck that's produced throughout the year. For Runner Runner isn't terrible enough to be simply ignored, it's that even more annoying film that's entirely capable of being good, but executed so poorly that it's even more frustrating, somehow. Consider it a cause of a misguided affection for the magic of good cinema, I'm more torn by films that are shit not because they never had a chance (ahem...) but by... Interview: NBA Star Jeremy Lin, Producer Brian Yang And Director Evan Jackson Leong Talk LINSANITY: THE MOVIE. Posted: 04 Oct 2013 09:00 AM PDT In 2012, New York Knicks point guard, Jeremy Lin, a many times passed-over, oft-rejected benchwarmer became an overnight sensation when he electrified the sports world with his dynamic, record breaking plays. The fact that Lin is Asian-American was a cause for worldwide exultation, as well as racial controversy. Linsanity: The Movie chronicles Lin's hard fight for survival in the NBA and the far-reaching effects of his meteoric fame. Here's my chat with NBA superstar Jeremy Lin, Producer Brian Yang and Director Evan Jackson Leong. Jeremy Lin The Lady Miz Diva: How was the idea of a documentary first put to you? Jeremy Lin: They pitched it when I was in college and I really wasn't comfortable with it. I would say after my rookie year,... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Feratum 2013 Dispatch, Day 1: Coffin Joe's Homage And How Technical Problems Ruined My Day Posted: 04 Oct 2013 08:00 AM PDT The first day of Feratum 2013 was definitely a mixed bag. The Coffin Joe homage was great but a series of technical problems ultimately ruined the movie-watching experience: I attended three screenings and each one of them marred bytruly annoying problems! Together with Mexico City's film journalists, I arrived in Tlalpujahua around 12:30 PM, not early enough to attend the festival's first events, including the showing of Orc Wars and Lección Debida. So my movie day really began until 3 PM at Teatro Obrero (the main theater), where the Canadian film In the House of Flies was scheduled to have its Mexican premiere. The theater was almost empty and after 30 minutes there was no indication we were at a real film festival. What happened next... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
