DMZ Docs 2013 Review: Unique Shaman Doc MANSHIN Is A Sensory Thrill Posted: 22 Oct 2013 12:30 AM PDT I've been a keen fan of Korean films for over a decade and have now spent about a year and a half living within the country's borders, yet, though I've been exposed to it many times, shamanism stubbornly remains a difficult part of the nation's heritage to get to grips with. Mystical and echoing an ancient way of life, it is not merely something that fallen in stature due to the ravages of time, it is a facet of Korean culture that requires a different way of thinking. Though frequently featured in Korean films, its inclusion is less pedagogic than atmospheric, such as in Lee Jang-ho's artful road movie The Man with Three Coffins (1987), Lee Yong-joo's brilliant K-horror Possessed (2009) or the madcap Park... |
You Must Watch The Trailer For Marathi Horror/Romance/Killer Doll Flick ZAPATLELA 2 3D Now. NOW! Posted: 21 Oct 2013 08:00 PM PDT Back in 1993, director Mahesh Kothare unleashed a killer doll on Marathi audiences and the result was a massive box office hit. Zapatlela was the story of a doll which had become the vessel for the soul of Tatya Vinchu (sounds familiar), and which ends up making its owners life a living hell.I haven't seen Zapatlela, though it is available in full on YouTube for free without subtitles, but it appears to play like a pretty standard Indian musical/comedy/romance/horror film. The sequel cranks up the crazy and adds director Kothare's son into the mix in the male romantic lead. I have no words to do this justice, you just have to watch.Zapatlela 2 is a the Marathi film industry's first ever sequel and also the... |
"Save The Day": DOCTOR WHO 50th Anniversary Teaser Hits Posted: 21 Oct 2013 07:30 PM PDT The 50th anniversary of BBC's seminal sci-fi series is fast approaching, with the special episode celebrating half a century of the mad man with a box broadcasting in most corners of the globe, November 23. So with that, a very teasing teaser has arrived.Through some visual effects magic the teaser attempts to link all 11 Doctors together, with the 11th himself, Matt Smith, doing a nice job of narrating what the current season arc (and arguably the entire show) has been building to. While they sell most regenerations of the Doctor rather heart achingly short (1,3,4 and 10 are prominent) it's a nifty little way to get us amped for the special.Have a look below. ... |
Smosh Share The Exclusive Trailer For The IF IT WERE REAL SAGA! Posted: 21 Oct 2013 06:25 PM PDT The YouTubers have taken over. If you're over a certain age you may not have noticed this while it was happening, but it very definitely has. I know this because I have A Boy. And The Boy, as I've noticed, spends far more time on YouTube than watching any sort of traditional media. He's rather fond of Freddie Wong, for one. Tobuscus, for another. DanIsNotOnFire for a third. But an enduring favorite, resting right at the top of the heap, are Smosh. The duo of Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla have been regulars at our dinner table, though I've never actually met them. Skits, songs, random gags, video game play throughs ... and a particular favorite are their long running series of If It Were Real... |
Valdivia 2013 Review: CICHONGA, Classic Grindhouse Imitation Going Slightly Wrong Posted: 21 Oct 2013 06:01 PM PDT In the first days of the Valdivia film festival here in Chile, the talk of the town was the world premiere of Cichonga, which is weird for a festival where the main focus is art house cinema from around the world. Although the festival has a special inclination towards the cinema of Latin America, no other genre filmmaking from this part of the world is featured in the program. This fact was even mentioned in the introduction of the film by one of the festival programmers The cinema was packed, everyone saw posters in the streets and postcards, everyone was talking about how much Cichonga was a novelty for the festival and how well sold it was to the audience present there. All the excitement... |
Cult Hit Short FIST OF JESUS Feature Expansion Lands A Producer, Gunning For Production In 2014 Posted: 21 Oct 2013 03:00 PM PDT The Messiah is coming and he brings a bloody fist with him. David Munoz and Adrian Cardona's short film Fist Of Jesus has proven to be something of a sensation online - where it's been viewed more than three million times - so it should come as no surprised that the duo's publicly wished-for feature length expansion is now also primed and ready to go ahead.Munoz and Cardona debuted a new clip and teaser for the feature project - titled Once Upon A Time In Jerusalem - at the just completed Sitges Film Festival and while we've not been cleared to share it (yet) we have seen it and it's pretty amazing. Imagine, if you will, the life of Christ fused with Mad Max, Six... |
Hitler Goes To High School For The Return Of DANGER 5! Posted: 21 Oct 2013 02:30 PM PDT What fresh hell is this? As fans of cult Australian television series Danger 5 are already well aware the first season ended with the titular group of heroes failing (once again) to kill Hitler and now we know where the diminutive dictator has gotten himself. With series two now in production a new behind the scenes photograph has turned up over on the show's official Facebook page and having failed to conquer Europe - and the world - it appears that the Fuhrer has set his sights on conquering high school, letter jackets and all. I'm sure it's all just part of a larger ploy, though. We'll be keeping a close eye on things but in the meanwhile check out the trailer for season one below.... |
What Is That Thing Between My Legs? JUNAN Trailer Explains Posted: 21 Oct 2013 02:00 PM PDT If you're a young woman from a conservative background, what do you do when you discover something new between your legs -- a "growth with a human face"? The NSFW trailer for Junan, which we learned about thanks to Nippon Cinema, explores this touchy issue with sensitivity and empathy jokes and big shining lights. You can watch it below. Directed by Yoshida Ryoko, the film, whose literal English translation is "Passion," is based on a novel by Himeno Kaoruko, published in 1997. Iwasa Mayuko stars as Francesco, who "grew up in a monastery," according to AsianWiki. "She is now an extremely lonely woman. Francesco is also curious about sex and relationships between men and women. One day, she notices a bump in her genital area... |

The tour will feature eight (8) outstanding, must-see titles from last month's Fantastic Fest, and will be visiting Alamo Drafthouse locations across the U.S. over three weekends in November. The tour is a partnership between Fantastic Fest, Drafthouse Films, Magnet Releasing, and Well Go USA. "We wanted to bring the excitement of Fantastic Fest to other cities around the country," Alamo Drafthouse and Fantastic Fest founder Tim League said in a prepared statement. Warsaw 2013 Review: THREE MARKS OF EXISTENCE, A Feel-Good, Spiritual Crowd-Pleaser From Thailand Posted: 21 Oct 2013 01:05 PM PDT Given the complex and deeply philosophical nature of the religious notion hidden behind the title of the film, Three Marks of Existence willfully dwells on the topic of reincarnation, kharma, and the difference between 'I' and 'mine', among other curious concepts that emerged along with the birth of Buddhism some thousands of years ago. Though the film revolves around a meaningful journey, it doesn't focus on finding the truth so much as it concentrates on the main character's heartwarming, hilarious adventures and his overall perception of the events that occur on the path to enlightenment, so to say.The main character of the story is M (Yossawat Sittiwong), a recent college graduate, whose life has been spiraling out of control lately, due to some job and... |

The Director Of ROID RAGE Returns With SLEEPWALKERS! Check The First Stills And Poster! Posted: 21 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT It was back in November of 2010 that we first came across Florida based director Ryan Lightbourn and his demented short film creation Roid Rage. The splatter comedy creature feature would eventually go on to screen at over fifty film festivals around the world and now Lightbourn has moved on to shoot his debut feature - the much more serious minded Sleepwalkers.Set in the deepest corners of Florida's woods, five college students attempt to enjoy a festive spring break getaway when they encounter a deadly, nocturnal presence. As horrific events unfold, the group joins forces with a local convenience store owner & a prison escapee. With night time approaching, they must set aside their differences and use their wits to survive.Check a selection of the... |
Wall Street Gets Nasty With The RAGING GRANNIES Posted: 21 Oct 2013 11:00 AM PDT Here's the thing about being old: You've got enough perspective on life to recognize a snow job when you see one and you really don't much give a damn what other people think of you. At least that's very much the case for Shirley and Hinda, a pair of American women in their nineties who have a very simple question: Does the perpetual growth model of economics actually make sense? Is continuous growth even possible? And so they get on their scooters and set off across the country to approach the leaders of America's economy and ask them.New from the producer of The Exorcist In The 21st Century, Raging Grannies tackles the economic crisis from a unique perspective with the trailer promising a film that... |
Kickstart This! Horror Anthology GERMAN ANGST Featuring Jorg Buttegereit Needs A Push Posted: 21 Oct 2013 10:00 AM PDT While horror anthologies seem to be a dime a dozen these days, it isn't that often that one is able to wrangle a cult legend like Jorg Buttegereit into returning to the genre after a 20 year absence. German Angst has done just that, but it's not a done deal just yet.The producers of the film are looking for money to get the project on the move, and they've put together quite a convincing Kickstarter proposal. Buttegereit (Nekromantik, Schramm, Der Todesking) is joined by Andreas Marschall (Masks, Tears of Kali) and Michal Kosakowski (Zero Killed), both of whom are also big figures in the German genre film scene. Frankly, looking through the conceptual material and examples of actual footage shot, this thing looks like it... |
Morelia 2013 Interview: Diego Quemada-Díez Says Ken Loach Loved LA JAULA DE ORO (THE GOLDEN CAGE) Posted: 21 Oct 2013 09:30 AM PDT Diego Quemada-Díez's La Jaula de Oro (The Golden Cage), Mexico's official submission for the upcoming Goya Awards, premiered in the country during the third day of activities at the Morelia Film Festival 2013. I watched it early in the morning and sat down to discuss it with Quemada-Díez some hours later. The press junkets happened before the red carpet so each individual interview lasted no more than five minutes, enough time for Quemada-Díez to share the opinion of one British cinema legend towards his debut film. Twitch: You have worked with three important directors for the social realism cinema: Ken Loach, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Fernando Meirelles. Did that experience influenced you and THE GOLDEN CAGE? Diego Quemada-Díez: Well, I needed to work. I was... |
Busan 2013 Review: The Devastating HAN GONG-JU Is A Hidden Gem Posted: 21 Oct 2013 09:00 AM PDT What is it that drives us to the cinema, time and again? What are we looking for when we enter a theater and the lights begin to fade? In answering that question you will often come across the words entertainment and escapism, two similar terms that nevertheless encompass slightly different purviews. However, at its best, cinema goes beyond mere distraction and has the ability to move us deeply. Like a decades-old junkie chasing his first high, I willingly trawl through a throng of films to experience anew the catharsis that cinema has the ability to provoke. A few consensus picks emerge from time to time but there's nothing quite like being blindsided by something you weren't expecting. This year's Busan Film Festival was terribly busy... |
Twitchvision: Jason Gorber Talks 12 YEARS A SLAVE, ESCAPE PLAN, and FIFTH ESTATE Posted: 21 Oct 2013 08:30 AM PDT Well, here's one you can make fun of even more than usual. I had a bit of a "brain fart" regarding a certain Assange-themed film, making Freudian slips with its title and that of a certain Bruce Willis sci-fi film instead. Also chatted about the extraordinary 12 Year A Slave and Arnie and Sly making their Escape Plan.Oh, and I guess I should watch Carrie someday, huh?Video embedded below... |
Morelia 2013 Review: Life Reflections From Inside An ELEVATOR (ELEVADOR) Posted: 21 Oct 2013 08:00 AM PDT The Mexican 70-minute documentary Elevator (original title: Elevador) shows right from the beginning a powerful way to contrast and distinguish a dream from reality. This is a film about losing hope, joy and youth, about broken dreams in modern Mexico City. At the same time, director Adrián Ortiz has created a little piece that yet explains much about the enormous impact institutions have on individuals. Ortiz doesn't use much stock footage aside of an almost surreal commercial that opens the doc and place us in a peculiar Mexico City building. Going back to the years when Miguel Alemán Valdés was Mexico's president (1946-1952), a terrestrial paradise for the government employee was conceived and, with renowned architect Mario Pani on board, the urban center Miguel Alemán... |
