On, No! Not Fluffy! The Kitty Gets It In Malaysian Giant Snake Film ULAR! Posted: 20 Oct 2013 05:00 PM PDT There's some giant snake action coming our way from Malaysia and director Jason Chong with his upcoming creature feature Ular due to hit local cinemas in December. As is always the case with these sorts of films the story is pretty stock with the entertainment value ultimately coming down to the execution and the trailer for Chong's film promises great things on that front. A group of lucky draw winners win a dream vacation on a seemingly idyllic island resort, only to discover themselves trapped on an island infested with deadly snakes.Take a look at the trailer below!... |
Third Window Picks Up A Trio Of Korean Titles For UK Posted: 20 Oct 2013 04:00 PM PDT Good news for fans of Korean cinema in the UK with word that Third Window Films have picked up a trio of titles for UK distribution. The three pictures - Bleak Night, Behind The Camera and Pluto - are a diverse lot, bringing a further breadth of genre and style to a roster which had already added Korean pictures How To Use Guys With Secret Tips and Boomerang Family earlier this year. Here's how Third Window's Adam Torel describes the new additions:First off is Shin Su-Won's PLUTO, a dark look at bullying, class hierarchy and murder in an elite high school where people will do anything to get into prestigious Universities. PLUTO was a runaway hit at last year's Busan Film Festival and went on... |

Warsaw 2013 Review: TANGERINES, An Engrossing Morality Tale That's Also A Lot Of Fun Posted: 20 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT Though generally categorized as a war drama, the newest picture from Georgian director Zaza Urushadze only uses war as a background to its moralizing and mightily effective story. There is a war, but it takes place within one household and is fought with words not weapons. Tangerines takes place in 1992 in a small village during the infamous War In Abkhazia, in which the mentioned country is trying to separate itself from Georgia. Only two men live in this secluded place, Ivo and Markus, Estonians whose daily lives consist of picking tangerines from the trees, in order to sell them later and earn money that will help them get back to Estonia and survive the war.One day, just in front of their homes, a fight ensues.... |
TADFF 2013 Short Film, Short Review: MY FATHER IS A BIRD Posted: 20 Oct 2013 11:00 AM PDT Out of Jerusalem comes this 13-minute examination of life and death and puberty. Young Benny is quickly discovering boners and what to do with them in his private moments. This would all be pretty normal, if not for his father being a 6 foot tall bird. He flies Benny back and forth to school, and occasionally takes him for lunch, sitting on power lines. When Dad suddenly (and violently) takes ill and starts dropping out of the sky, along with experiencing serious troubles eating dinner at the suburban home he lives in with his otherwise human family, the doctor connects Benny's recent (and compulsive) masturbation as being the direct cause. As 13-year-old Benny furiously and futilely tries to prevent himself from relieving his urges and... |
Posted: 20 Oct 2013 10:00 AM PDT Director Michael Rowe is a man who talks slowly. He met the press after the Morelia Film Festival screening of his second feature film Manto Acuífero (aka The Well), telling us that it's a very personal effort. And, indeed, Rowe's own personality doesn't contrast at all with the tone and rhythm of Manto Acuífero. It's not a film that moves fast and the director's main intention is clear right from the beginning: he wants us to see how a very particular period of a little girl's life unfolds naturally. Manto Acuífero is minimalist, filmed around one house in the Mexican state of Puebla. Since it follows the mentioned girl and it's set during a school break, we don't see when the characters (the girl's mother... |
Review: Despite Its Contrivances, Ian Lorenos' ALAGWA (BREAKAWAY) Can Only Leave You in Tears Posted: 20 Oct 2013 09:00 AM PDT Inspired by an urban legend about kidnappers targeting children to be turned into beggars, Ian Lorenos' Alagwa (Breakaway) tells the story of Robert (Jericho Rosales) and Brian (Bugoy Carino), his son. The film opens with Robert and Brian shopping inside a mall. Brian wanders off, attracted by the various toys being peddled. Seeing that his son is missing, Robert searches the mall, seeing Brian playing with the toys. He pulls away his son from the toys and scolds him, warning him of the syndicates that kidnap children to use them as beggars. The relationship between Robert and Brian is one that is far from ideal. Robert works as a salesman, struggling to survive within the normally wealthy Filipino-Chinese community with only the meager commissions he earns. Brian... |
