The Stack: BEFORE MIDNIGHT, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, NIGHT TIDE, And More Posted: 22 Oct 2013 03:00 PM PDT This week's show is a little light on Halloween goodness but what's there is, is choice. Night Tide is an early Dennis Hopper vehicle full of sea siren sideshows and tragic surrealism. The Purge is one of the better home invasion movies in recent times. Also appearing for the first time on stateside Blu-ray are High Plains Drifter, in which Clint Eastwood may or may not be a ghost, the shorts compilation Chilling Visions (go Emily M. Hagins), and the scary no matter how you look at it The Untold History of the United States from Oliver Stone. You can watch the entire video below. Bat Country shirt by Harebrained ... |

Euro Beat: First Image From Mike Leigh's J.M.W. Turner Project! Posted: 22 Oct 2013 12:30 PM PDT Also in today's edition of Euro Beat: Catherine Deneuve turns 70 and remains awesome, Alain Delon goes a little nuts at 77 (or has he always been?), promising films win at the London Film Festival, plus, Europe takes back its box office! We'll begin with the first still from a project Euro Beat has tracked since it was first announced, and which appears to be actually happening! Yes, we now have photographic proof that Mike Leigh's biopic of the amazing painter J.M.W. Turner is indeed in production, and that Leigh's appreciation of the top hat has not diminished since Topsy Turvy.Have a look:... |
The Giant Wasps Are Flying! STUNG Wraps First Day Of Shooting! Posted: 22 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT It was way, way back in February of 2008 when I first came across German director Benni Diez. He had just co-directed a short film titled Kingz with Marinko Spahic and that short was far and away one of the best I saw in that year, an amazing blend of scifi, action and horror elements that made me a fan for life. I ended up programming Kingz at a few festivals though the year and struck up a relationship with the directors that saw me send them an email every few months since asking why they hadn't made a feature film yet. And then one day Benni answered by saying, "Well, I've got this script ..."That script was Stung, a horror comedy in the vein... |

Review: OUR DAY WILL COME, An Instant Cult Title Arrives on Digital VOD Posted: 22 Oct 2013 09:00 AM PDT It remains to be seen whether he will be loved our hated by audiences at large - and both seem equally likely - yet there is no doubt at all that Our Day Will Come announces the arrival of Romain Gavras as a significant new talent in world cinema. Though working with a very different style, Gavras embraces the same sort of fuck you abrasiveness that has made Lars Von Trier such a polarizing presence on the world scene and we should expect nothing less from Gavras. A cynical outsider epic, Our Day Will Come is the story of Remy and Patrick, a pair of misfits joined together by their dislike of society and their red hair. Patrick (Vincent Cassel) is a psychotherapist sick to... |
Morelia 2013 Interview: Maria de Medeiros Talks Tarantino After 19 Years of PULP FICTION Posted: 22 Oct 2013 08:00 AM PDT Maria de Medeiros is in Morelia to present her latest film, the documentary Bacuri's Eyes (original title: Repare Bem). She's also part of the jury for the Mexican feature length film official selection. Bacuri's Eyes screened at the festival on October 21 (4 PM) and there will be another showing on 25 (6:30 PM), hence it was impossible to watch it before meeting Medeiros. One-on-one interviews were suppose to happen early in the morning on October 21 and I was ready, thinking five or so minutes were enough to talk with her about the origins of Bacuri's Eyes, her favorite films so far from Morelia's selection and, why not, the upcoming 20th anniversary of Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (Fabienne is arguably her most famous role).... |
Watch Pedro Pires' Astounding DANSE MACABRE Posted: 22 Oct 2013 07:30 AM PDT Pedro Pires' short film Danse Macabre is a perfect little gem of a film, a fusion of film and performance art revolving around the sanctity and even beauty of death captured flawlessly on film. It's been a great favorite here at Twitch for some years now and it has just been released online for free viewing. This is eight minutes very, very well spent. For a period of time, while we believe it to be perfectly still, lifeless flesh responds, stirs and contorts in a final macabre ballet. Are these spasms merely erratic motions or do they echo the chaotic twists and turns of a past life?... |
