Last night at a talk between directors Chris Weitz and Shimizu Takashi held by the US - Japan Film Academy as part of Tokyo International Film Festival, a short teaser trailer for Shimizu's just finished live-action version of Kiki's Delivery Service was screened. The film is based on a book by Kadono Eiko but was of course made famous in 1989 when Studio Ghibli adapted it into an animated feature film. The director, known for his horror films, didn't go into to much detail on the movie but was asked about how he got offered the job:"When I first got the offer I was really surprised as I'm always offered Horror movies. I thought, is the person offering me this mad!? Do you know what kind...

Review: SOLDATE JEANETTE Is A European Film Conspiracy Challenging Viewing Habits

Posted: 19 Oct 2013 07:00 PM PDT

Austrian art house flick Soldate Jeanette by Daniel Hoesl does not hide its rebellious tendencies. In big letters "A European Film Conspiracy" appears on the screen at the beginning of the film. It stands for a certain style of thinking and shooting low-budget but it is also a challenge for the audience in terms of viewing habits. Protagonist Fanni lives in a strange world of rejection. She is of bourgeois decent but stops to pay her bills. Nevertheless she keeps her decadent lifestyle. As in the case of Danny Boyle's Trainspotting (though without the drugs) a modern rebellion of "Not to" unfolds. Fanni just stops and thus inspires revolution. She escapes to a rural area, a farm, and meets Anna, a young woman with problems...

Warsaw 2013 Review: The Boys Are Back In KIDS RETURN: THE REUNION, A Commercialized Follow-Up To A Kitano Classic

Posted: 19 Oct 2013 06:00 PM PDT

Kitano Takeshi, a born comedian and devoted creator of many downright gritty cop thrillers in which he also starred, stunned the whole world in 1996 when he made Kids Return, a picture that showed a completely fresh and unpredictable side of this enormously versatile artist, and was also a sort of turning point in his career as a director. The film's offbeat atmosphere, wry sense of humor, attractive script and hilarious, lovable characters quickly made it an audience favorite both in Japan and overseas. Nowadays, Kids Return might be easily called a classic, a comedy that many refer to as Kitano's most personal and most imaginative picture in his truly impressive cinematic portfolio.Shimizu Hiroshi, who attended this year's Warsaw Film Festival in order to promote...

Tokyo 2013 Review: THE (Very Long) TALE OF AYA

Posted: 19 Oct 2013 05:00 PM PDT

The Tale of Aya opens with the image of an old man in traditional clothes making his way over rough terrain on a snowy mountain. The viewer is coaxed into making the obvious assumption that this is sometime in the past, and the man is living a difficult life in one of Japan's remote mountainous regions, that is until the man comes across a road off which a car has veered, the body of the driver dead inside. A short distance away lies a baby, no doubt thrown from the car but seemingly unharmed. It's an excellent sequence and a great lead into the film which shows off what is undoubtedly the movies strength - it's beautiful imagery. Shot on 35mm film, it looks vastly superior...

Tokyo 2013 Review: DISREGARDING PEOPLE, Disgusting People

Posted: 19 Oct 2013 04:00 PM PDT

I often hear that Japan's post-bubble generation have a pessimistic view of the future, both their own and of their country. This negative outlook is often represented in art and film, and a sense of bleak hopelessness is certainly evident in Disregarded People. Films like this one repeatedly crop up in Japanese festival lineups, cold and bleak and sadly lacking in enough originality to make it a truly worthwhile watch.Yusuke is a crude, humorless lout who comes to a small, declining island town, fed up with life and with the eventual aim of committing suicide. Into this picture comes Kyoko, a girl with a birthmark covering half of her face who is kind enough to smile at him. For this small act of kindness he...

Morelia 2013: 5 Quotes From Alfonso Cuarón's GRAVITY Conference

Posted: 19 Oct 2013 03:10 PM PDT

Just two days after attending Alfonso Cuarón's press conference in Mexico City, I had the chance to see him again, now at the Morelia Film Festival where Gravity plays as opening film. This time the conference was shorter and ultimately repetitive when compared to the Mexico City one. Cuarón began recalling his previous trip to Morelia saying, "I wasn't sober that time so let's just forget that conference!" Since he talked about similar themes, I'm just bringing you five attractive bits (plus more photos), nothing you can read about in the Gravity Mexico City conference article. (All photos by Claudia Aguilar Guarneros for Twitch)...
