The most notable of such events on the calendar is the annual San Diego Film Fest which kicks off tomorrow at sites downtown and in La Jolla. We've taken a look at the lineup and have picked a few can't-miss events for anyone spending the next few days in the sunny city to the South.... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Review: Jiří Menzel's DON JUANS Lacks Plot But Not Affection For Opera Posted: 01 Oct 2013 04:00 PM PDT Even big directors need a break. Jiří Menzel, the Academy Award winning Czech director, was on one as it had been over 7 years since his last film, I Served the King of England (he's only made 3 features in the last 20 years). It seems he is in a holiday mode even in his freshest feature, Don Juans, which he not only directed but has also written. Menzel belongs among the Czech directorial big shots from the 60s, along Miloš Forman and Věra Chytilová, and is well-known for adapting the literary works of Bohumil Hrabal. That´s why it came as a surprise that he was shooting a raunchy comedy under the working title The Skirt Chasers. One of the most memorable scenes, or mostly... EXCLUSIVE: Get To Know The Inner World Of THE DIRTIES' Matt & Owen With This Fresh Trailer Posted: 01 Oct 2013 03:30 PM PDT Phase 4 and Kevin Smith Movie Club will be dropping The Dirties into North American theaters and on VOD this Friday, October 4. If you've been paying attention than you know we're big fans of the multi-award winning film here at Twitch (in my book it's a cult classic in the making and one of the most relevant films of 2013 for how it very intelligently handles bullying and school violence). A fresh trailer for the flick shows us the inner world of the film's bullied subjects, student filmmakers Matt and Owen -- take a gander below! ... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
First Look At Prabhu Deva's R... RAJKUMAR Looks Like Every Other Bollywood Action Film Posted: 01 Oct 2013 02:00 PM PDT Prabhu Deva is one of India's most prolific and uneven talents both in front of and behind the camera, and the trailer for his latest film, R... Rajkumar, doesn't do much to tilt the balance to the positive side.I've gushed about the man as dancer and director on numerous occasions on this site, but the more I see from him, the more I realize that the scope of his talents appears to be unfortunately very narrow. R... Rajkumar (renamed from Rambo Rajkumar for fear of litigation), is his latest action masala film, following up on similar efforts Wanted and Rowdy Rathore. In fact, so similar, that it's difficult to distinguish between them in many cases. Apart from the changing male leads, Shahid Kapoor this time... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

First Trailer For Horror Comedy CHASTITY BITES Appears Ahead Of November 1st VOD Premiere Posted: 01 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT Written by Lotti Pharriss Knowles and directed by John V Knowles, Chastity Bites is a new horror-comedy that has recently shown to great crowds at film festivals around the world. The husband-wife team has also been involved with Automat Pictures' Jeffrey Schwarz in the production of his last few documentary features, Vito, Spine Tingler: The William Castle Story, and I Am Divine.Chastity Bites is their debut as a writing-directing team, and I'm pretty psyched to see it. If the trailer is to be believed, the film looks to ride the line drawn by films like Cherry Falls, Excision, Teeth, and Saved. This sort of farce addressing moral rigidity is right up my alley. Chastity Bites has already played the Lund Fantastic Film Festival, the Philadelphia... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
THE GRANDMASTER Leads Taiwan's Golden Horse Award Nominations Posted: 01 Oct 2013 11:30 AM PDT Widely regarded as the foremost awards ceremony in Asian Cinema, Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards announced the nominees for its 50th Anniversary edition earlier today, and it should come as little surprise to see Wong Kar Wai's martial arts epic The Grandmaster leading the pack with a whopping 11 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress - though notably missing out in the Best Screenplay category.Wong's Ip Man biopic will face healthy competition, however, from Anthony Chen's Ilo Ilo, Jia Zhangke's A Touch of Sin, Feng Xiaogang's Back to 1942, Dante Lam's Unbeatable and Stephen Chow & Derek Kwok's Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons - all of which bagged 6 nominations, despite only the first two listed here garnering a Best Film nod.... Interview: Director Rodrigo Ordoñez On DEPOSITARIES, Mexican Science Fiction, And The Possibility Of A Remake Posted: 01 Oct 2013 11:00 AM PDT Rodrigo Ordoñez's first feature film Depositaries (Depositarios) opened in Mexican cinemas last Friday after three years of struggle for proper distribution, a delay that's not unusual when it comes to Mexican movies. The film had its festival run back in 2010-2011 but it seems the definitive attraction for distributors came last May when the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences (AMACC) awarded Depositarios with the Ariel for best visual effects. On September 17, I sat down with Ordoñez at a Mexico City restaurant to talk about this rare science fiction effort. Twitch: Tell me about the origin of DEPOSITARIES. Rodrigo Ordoñez: I started writing this movie 14 years ago, in 1999, when I was in my second or third year of film school, at the Centro... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Review: Jerrold Tarog's SANA DATI (IF ONLY) is an Affecting Romantic Film for Failed Romantics Posted: 01 Oct 2013 10:00 AM PDT Jerrold Tarog has been exposing the hard truths behind the Philippines' greatest preoccupations, politics and family. Through characters whose jobs are related to cameras, Tarog destroys myths that have misled Filipinos into a distorted sense of comfort. In Confessional (2007), a documentary filmmaker accidentally stumbles upon a corrupt mayor. The mayor then confesses all his sins on video, lecturing the filmmaker of the fallacy of the Philippines so-called nationhood. In Mangatyanan (The Blood Trail, 2009), an awarded photographer struggles with the nagging influence of her father, who is also an esteemed photographer. In her attempt to take pictures of a rare ritual of a dying tribe, she learns to accept the sins her father has committed against her which effectively ripped their family apart. Tarog... Vigalondo Shows Us What Love Is Posted: 01 Oct 2013 09:00 AM PDT While he puts the finishing touches on his next feature Open Windows, Spanish Energizer Bunny Nacho Vigalondo made a little film about love. Vigalondo was approached by beer company Brabante Cerveza, who asked him to make a short about that essential emotion. According to Vigalondo, they gave him complete creative freedom, and he feels that it represents his work. It definitely brings to mind his Oscar-nominated short 7:35 in the morning, and will hopefully tide us all over while we wait for his next big film. You'll find the film embedded below, with English subtitles included.... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
