The Mo Brothers Unleash Their KILLERS In Exclusive First Teaser

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 09:00 PM PDT

Having won international acclaim with their debut feature, Macabre (Rumah Dara in their native Indonesia), fans have been eagerly awaiting the next effort from Jakarta based directing duo The Mo Brothers. They've been busy in the time since, one half of the duo (Timo Tjahjanto) turning in a stomach churning segment of The ABCs Of Death and teaming up with The Raid director Gareth Evans for the Safe Haven segment of VHS 2, but things have been silent on the Mo Brothers proper front until now.Tjahjanto and directing partner Kimo Stamboel teamed up with Japanese production house Nikkatsu, The Raid director Gareth Huw Evans' PT Merantau Films, and LA based XYZ Films (where, obligatory full disclosure, I am a partner) for their second effort and...

Indie Beat: 5 Most Intriguing Indies In October

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 05:00 PM PDT

October is looking to be one of the best months of the year for independently minded film in the U.S., if only because a handful of titles that have been some of the most anticipated and talked about (and controversial) of the last 10 months (and one that's been sitting in limbo for years) are finally arriving to our silver screens. I've also got an excellent short to share (perhaps even more excellent if you're someone who battles with the idea of birthdays), so no more beating around the bush, let's get to it!...

The fair trade filmmaking site Seed&Spark is running a little experiment in the festival arena and it's all going down Tuesday, October 1 through Thursday October 3 at the Hub LA. Now, full disclosure, I'll be participating with the closing night program which features one of my favorite film from 2012, The Slamdance premiering The Sound Of Small Things and the short film True Colours. The other nights include Sundance programmer Christine Davila presenting the indie-rock film The Crumbles, and Seed&Spark founder-CEO Emily Best hosting a screening of the travelogue I Send You This Place, with filmmakers Andrea Sisson & Pete Ohs in attendance.  So, why is this worth your attention? Well, for the price of a latte you can get a whole evening's worth...

Fear & Loathing at Fantastic Fest 2013/2009, Part 5. As if Things Could End Any Other Way. (NSFW)

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 03:00 PM PDT

CHAPTER 12: LEAVE THE HAT ON, COWBOYIt's roughly one in the morning and I'm having an impromptu picnic with Rebecca at Barton Springs, a natural spring fed pool in south Austin. Rebecca was able to snatch a bottle of vodka and a handle of whiskey from work. And right now, we're the only two living souls in sight on the grounds of the popular hangout.Rebecca is already topless, drinking straight from the bottle of Stoli that she stole from the Highball. I've got the bourbon in my right hand. I just came here from the biggest party happening tonight in the state of Texas and I'm with a beautiful half naked woman who's probably going to be taking off the rest of what she has...

NYC Happenings: Get To Know The Late, Great Park Chul-soo With 301, 302

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 02:00 PM PDT

Perhaps not as well known to this generation of cinema goers, Park Chul-soo was an important staple in modern Korean cinema. Why you ask? Inspired by his time in Manhattan and the independent film scene that was flourishing there in the 90s, he all but jump started what became Korea's own fiercely independent and creatively prosperous period of cinema, a time that gave us the likes of Kim Ki Duk, an artist that Park mentored. Park died earlier this year by the reckless hand of a drunk driver. He was on his way home from shooting his now final project. As our own Pierce Conran put it in his obituary: " Known for his energy and enthusiasm, the last 24hrs have featured many fond remembrances...

Out Now On UK DVD: DEAD SUSHI Is Iguchi Insanity At Its Finest

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 01:00 PM PDT

My friend and colleague Peter K once wrote a paper on the question of cultural difference, and how that translates when one watches a film from a different country. Can we really understand all the nuances of films that come from a cultural understanding, and perhaps most importantly, sense of humour, so different from our own? This always comes to mind when watching films from Japan, especially when they are like Noboru Iguchi's  Dead Sushi. I won't pretend to understand even half of what's going on; but it's about the journey, and this film is one hell of a fun journey. Monster Pictures have released a DVD in the UK, with some fine extras. The premise is a little convoluted, but not too important, as it...

Watch The Trailer For James Lee's Twice-Blocked CLAYPOT CURRY KILLERS

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 12:00 PM PDT

It was all the way back in March of 2011 that we last heard from James Lee's Malaysian horror film Claypot Curry Killers, the occasion at the time being the film's second refusal for release by the Malaysian censorship board due to the film's extreme content. It seems that Lee's status as one of Malaysia's best known and most respected arthouse directors on the festival circuit wasn't going to help him with this one, the story of a family whose small restaurant was stocked with meat by questionable means, and the road to getting it to audiences has been a long one. But now, finally, it is coming, though if I'm reading this trailer correctly it's coming via a release on cable television rather than...

The Busan International Film Festival, the largest film celebration in Asia, is just a few days away and Twitch is packing its bags and heading to the beachside Korean town. I will be making my second trip to the fest and joining me for his first go-round will be Kwenton Bellette, who is making the trip all the way from Melbourne.I saw a lot of great films at BIFF last year and am expecting more of the same this time around but, with 301 films on the program, from countries as diverse as Bhutan and Tajikistan no less, it's easy to get lost with so much on offer. To make things a little easier for any of you joining us for Asia's number one film...

Vancouver 2013 Review: BENDS Offers An Assured Study Of Class, Wealth And Excess

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 10:30 AM PDT

Bends, the first full-length film from Flora Lau, observes a dreamy Hong Kong through the eyes of a wealthy, middle-aged kept woman Anna (Carina Lau), and her young, blue-collar driver (Chen Kun). Minutes into the film, shortly after Anna sips champagne as the hostess of a dinner party, and declares "look at me, I'm so free" as a testimonial for sending your children to boarding school, her husband and source of income disappears. What's both mysterious and fascinating about the film is that Anna never reports his absence to the police, nor seems worried for him. She knows, it seems, that he has deserted her and that the financial well will soon dry up. Reacting, or non-reacting, with denial, annoyance and bewilderment, Carina Lau...

Combined with previously-published reviews of another 30 or titles, that means we've covered all but a handful of the films that played during Fantastic Fest, which is a testament to the strength of the program -- and the hardiness of our dedicated, often sleep-deprived reviewers! Review: Jang Joon-hwan Returns With Dark Thriller HWAYI

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Korean cinema has become known for its thrillers, and though the genre is one that is popular around the world, there is one particular take on the genre that Korea has excelled at: let's call it the emotional thriller. By blending thriller and action elements with melodrama, a cultural mainstay, the emotional thriller is something we come across time and again in Korean films. Characters in these films are often scarred by their pasts, which are invariably colored by events from Korea's dark contemporary history. Coinciding with narrative elements, these backstories invariably play a central role and prime the gears for enormous emotional releases in the final act. Ten years ago, Jang Joon-hwan debuted with Save the Green Planet, a madcap hybrid of genre with...

You Must Watch Denis Villeneuve's Short Film NEXT FLOOR!

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Prior to lighting it up with great films like Incendies and Prisoners Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve caught our attention with his 2008 short film Next Floor. There really is not a single thing that we can say about it except that we love it very much and it is now available for everyone to see! During an opulent and luxurious banquet, complete with hordes of servers and valets, eleven pampered guests participate in what appears to be a ritualistic gastronomic carnage. In this absurd and grotesque universe, an unexpected sequence of events destabilizes the endless symphony of abundance....

Saif Ali Khan & Vidyut Jamwal Clash In BULLETT RAJA Trailer

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 07:10 AM PDT

First of all, that is a terrible poster. What the hell were they thinking?Anyway, Tigmanshu Dhulia returns to the director's chair after the critically acclaimed Paan Tomar Singh and Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster with a more standard looking masala film, Bullett Raja. This one has been in the works for a while, and while the trailer isn't anything too outside the box, there are reasons to believe that the film could deliver something beyond its rather common exterior.Tigmanshu Dhulia is a very good writer and director, and this bodes well for the film. He has plenty of experience putting together Bollywood masala movies, including surprise hits like Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, but he can also write the more serious stuff like Paan Singh Tomar and...
