Posted: 23 Oct 2013 05:00 PM PDT Mari Pepa is the name of a punk rock band in We Are Mari Pepa (original title: Somos Mari Pepa), Samuel Isamu Kishi Leopo's extension of his own 18-minute short film Mari Pepa (presented as well at the Morelia Film Festival back in 2011). "Mari" refers to marihuana, while "pepa" is slang for vagina; so, indeed, we are dealing with a band composed of four (Mexican) teenagers, who scream such lyrics as "I want to cum in your face" while playing power chords. There's a funny nature attached to watching skinny teenagers playing music like that, fighting during rehearsals or just having casual/vulgar conversations between them. We Are Mari Pepa functions as a really entertaining movie for the most part, with a style that tries... |
How Do You Say THE AVENGERS In Japanese? MARVEL DISK WARS Coming Posted: 23 Oct 2013 04:00 PM PDT As part of an ever-expanding plan to dominate the entertainment world, Walt Disney Japan will produce an animated series targeted at boys aged 6-12. Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers will premiere on Japanese TV sometime in the spring of 2014, according to a press release. It's a collaboration with Toei Animation and Nerima-ku, with Bandai Co. taking charge of character merchandising. Walt Disney Japan "is actively localizing content to fit the tastes and sensibilities of Japanese audiences" and Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers will be the first aimed specifically at boys, who will then, presumably, become Marvel fanboys for life. The story will revolve around how The Avengers - Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk together with the help of Spider-Man and a... |
Jason Clarke Joins Animal-Morphing LOBSTER From Yorgos Lanthimos Posted: 23 Oct 2013 03:00 PM PDT Yorgos Lanthimos has assembled quite a cast for his first English-language project. Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and Lea Seydoux (Blue is the Warmest Color, pictured below) have joined Ben Whishaw (Skyfall) and Olivia Colman (I Give It A Year) for The Lobster, described as a dystopian tale of the future. Clarke, whose star has been rising precipitously since last year's Zero Dark Thirty, will bring some heat and attention, I assume, from his lead role in the next Apes, but he's also a very fine actor, and it will be interesting to see what sparks he and Seydoux will make fly in the film. Here's an official synopsis: The Lobster is a story about love, without being a conventional love... |
Tom Hardy Will Glitter Up As Elton John in ROCKETMAN Posted: 23 Oct 2013 02:30 PM PDT After months of speculation, Tom Hardy has been confirmed to play Elton John in Rocketman, according to The Wrap. The film will be "a larger-than-life movie musical spectacle that tells the story of a child prodigy turned music legend." Reportedly, John will re-record "many" of his songs "to parallel the emotional beats of the film." I have no idea what that means, exactly, but it sounds like an excellent way to drive sales of the inevitable soundtrack album. Rocketman will be distributed in the U.S. by Focus Features, which is in the process of being transformed by new CEO Peter Schlessel, who brought the project from his former job as head of FilmDistrict. Michael Gracey will direct, based on an original screenplay by Lee Hall... |
Kickstart This! Tal Zimmerman's Documentary WHY HORROR? Posted: 23 Oct 2013 02:00 PM PDT There are loads of horror docs out there already so why should you pony up your hard earned cash to help Tal Zimmerman, Rob Lindsay and Nicolas Kleiman complete their in progress work Why Horror? Because unlike other offerings this one is not about a particular movement or filmmaker but about the psychology of horror itself and why we're drawn to being repulsed. Plus it's already got interviews with a host of luminaries - the directors alone already on camera include John Carpenter, George Romero, Alexandre Aja, Eli Roth, Alex de la Iglesia, Don Coscarelli and more - and you could score yourself a copy of that lovely artwork to the left: An original piece by Ghoulish Gary Pullin. There's also the small matter that... |
Check Out The Tom Hodge Designed Poster For Stuart Simpson's CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRY VANILLA Posted: 23 Oct 2013 01:00 PM PDT It's a Tom Hodge / The Dude Designs sort of day here on Twitch, apparently. Just an hour ago we posted the trailer for Red Clark's Gray Matter, a short film based on the story by Stephen King also featuring typically stellar poster art from Hodge and now here we are with another Hodge design. This one comes courtesy of Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla - the new feature from El Monstro Del Mar director Stuart Simpson. Soon to premiere as part of Australia's Monster Fest we're told a trailer should follow in the next couple days but in the meantime you can check out a large version of the poster by clicking the image below. Here's how the festival describes the film:Stuart Simpson is a major Australian... |

Red Clark's GRAY MATTER Teaser Trailer Is Old School Perfection Posted: 23 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT I first heard about someone making a short film out of Stephen King's short story Gray Matter at a horror movie marathon here in Chicago. That was over a year ago. Red Clark, the writer director happened to be there and I told him how enthusiastic I was about it. In true journalistic fashion I promptly forgot about the whole thing including a promise to keep in touch. I have felt guilty ever since. Now I just feel stupid.Red Clark has had a lot of fun since I last saw him. This trailer is a hoot. Full of practical effects, gory suspense and a Kingian sensibility it looks to be a solidly scary adaptation of the source material. It also has Larry Fessenden, and a pair... |
"I Don't Need To Be Put On A Pedestal": An Interview With BASTARDS Director Claire Denis Posted: 23 Oct 2013 11:00 AM PDT Claire Denis goes all-out noir in Bastards, a brooding, nocturnal thriller where innocents get punished and good men die. With a star studded cast, Denis creates a film experience so seductive and mesmerizing, it reminded me of the exhilaration that I haven't felt in theaters since, gosh, maybe Mulholland Dr.?The film's strong sexual contents are stirring controversy since it debuted at Cannes (in Un Certain Regard section). It will be a divisive film for sure. But there is no question that the film demonstrates Denis as a filmmaker in her prime. I had a pleasure of chatting with her for the second time since her last outing to NYFF with White Material in 2010.Twitch: BASTARDS plays out like a hardboiled film noir in the vein... |
Posted: 23 Oct 2013 10:00 AM PDT One of the most anticipated films from Morelia's official Mexican selection is Claudia Sainte-Luce's The Amazing Catfish (Los Insólitos Peces Gato), winner of the FIPRESCI Discover Award at the Toronto International Film Festival 2013. The Amazing Catfish will connect with all kinds of audiences as it deals with a dysfunctional family, having both funny and sensitive parts. I sat down with Sainte-Luce for some minutes to talk about her debut feature length film. Note: The interview contains some spoilers. Twitch: A lot of films based on real life events begin with that legend ("based on a true story"). Why did you decide not to tell this to the audience? Claudia Sainte-Luce: Because (The Amazing Cat-Fish) is full of lies (laughs). Sure, it's based on something... |

A pair of new trailers have arrived today for Anchorman: The Legend Continues featuring plenty of new footage of Will Farrell et al behaving like idiots. Idiots with fabulous facial hair. There's really no point in offering commentary beyond that as it'll inevitably degrade into a list of favorite gags so just check 'em out below and let us know what you think.... |

Destroy All Monsters: Carrie, Chloe, and the Terror of a Teenaged Girl Posted: 23 Oct 2013 08:00 AM PDT Kimberly Pierce's hapless Carrie remake, starring Chloe Grace Moretz in the title role, didn't quite light the box office on fire over the weekend, failing to plug the gap in the horror movie schedule vacated by Paranormal Activity 5, which moved to next fall. (Read Eric's review of Carrie here.) Carrie '13 is a good example of a remake that nobody asked for - the original Carrie, like The Exorcist, was a product of its time and its unique ability (then) to surprise an audience seeing it for the first time. As the remake proves, if you've seen one shower of pig's blood, you've seen 'em all. As The Dissolve pointed out, a big problem with Carrie '13 is Carrie herself, and the actress playing... |
Morelia 2013: All About Tarantino's Film Program, Kicking Off Tonight (Plus Exclusive Photos) Posted: 23 Oct 2013 07:30 AM PDT Quentin Tarantino is in Morelia, Mexico for the third time. Why? He's coming for the same reasons he did it back in 2010: be the curator of a film program. Tarantino landed in Morelia on Monday but it was until yesterday that things went crazy, when the director of Pulp Fiction and Django Unchained made his appearance at the principal movie theater (Cinépolis Morelia Centro) to watch the Mexican film La Zandunga (Fernando de Fuentes, 1938). It's worth noting that La Zandunga is part of the festival's program to homage actor Arturo de Córdova, for which QT contributed with two 35mm prints from his personal collection: Frenchman's Creek and Adventures of Casanova. Ever since Morelia 2013 confirmed the surprise visit of Tarantino, many questions have... |
