(Do Schoolgirls Dream of Apocalyptic Amazons?) For lovers of Japanese animation it pays to keep track of those series which are being broadcast in Fuji TV's famous noitaminA slot. In general these will be aimed at a more mature audience than run-of-the-mill anime is, and often contain daring subject matter combined with distinctive artwork. Black Rock Shooter is such a series, being part of the noitaminA slot earlier this year. Still, looking at the marketing materials you'd think it to be a loli-goth wankfest aimed at adolescent boys. Babes in bikinis, corsets and capes epically fight each other through several dystopic landscapes, using an assortment of big guns, swords, robots and monsters. Doesn't sound all that mature, right? But now you can judge for yourself:...

Review: SON OF SARDAAR Puts A Sikh Slant On Buster Keaton

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 12:17 AM PST

*Sardar is a term colloquially used to refer to adult male followers of SikhismI thought for a moment about putting that little tidbit in the footnotes, but since it's in the title of the film, I thought it should go right up front. What that definition from Wikipedia doesn't tell you is that Sardars are kind of like the Pollacks of India in that they have numerous unfounded jokes hurled at them from all comers. The stereotype of the Sardar is that of an overgrown manchild, a fighting machine who indulges in big living, whether that is riding pimped out motorcycles or throwing insane parties, Sardars are seen as big galoots. Now, before I get hate mail, I know some Sardars, and I know other...

Review: JAB TAK HAI JAAN Jerks A Few Tears, Earns A Few Jeers, Caps A Career

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 12:10 AM PST

It's difficult to talk about Jab Tak Hai Jaan without putting it in its proper context. Not only is the the final film of one of Bollywood's most beloved auteurs, and the author of the modern romantic cinema in which so much of India still revels, Yash Chopra, it's also the latest film from one of the Hindi film industry's biggest stars, Shah Rukh Khan. It couldn't be lugging around heavier baggage. There is the temptation to sentimentalize about Chopra's career and allow that feeling to seep into any kind of critical response to the film, a reaction to which I may not even find myself immune, however, Jab Tak Hai Jaan delivers exactly as it is supposed to on all levels, and that's not...

Mere weeks after his Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles hit screens in the Philippines director Erik Matti is following it with something very, very different. While Aswang was an effects driven spectacle for mass audiences Matti's upcoming Rigodon looks to play more as a super realistic, mature audiences only sexual thriller, one that tracks the consequences of a married man's affair to its tragic conclusion. With a late November release date looming the full theatrical trailer has arrived here at Twitch, with English subtitles included. Take a look below. Yam Concepcion, John James Uy and Max Eigenmann star....

Review: BOARDWALK EMPIRE S3E09, THE MILKMAID'S LOT (Or, Nucky Stands Alone And Bible Camp's Canceled)

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 03:30 PM PST

The entire world may not have turned against Nucky Thompson - his plan to bring down George Remus and, by extension, the Attorney General gets off to a lovely start, for one - but it certainly feels like it has throughout the run time of The Milkmaid's Lot. Badly concussed, confused and bed ridden following the explosion at Babette's Nucky stumbles his way through the episode trying to rally the troops and generally distracting from the fact that, at its core, this episode really belongs to Margaret. But first, a role call of those present ...First, Gyp Rosetti quickly gets things well in hand in Tabor Heights, rolling in with a virtual army of heavily armed men and paying off the entire town to keep their...

Review: DEXTER S7E07, CHEMISTRY (Or, Cue Up The Girl Fight)

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 03:00 PM PST

Girl trouble, anyone? Dexter's got it, and bad. If you recall, last week's episode ended with Dexter having a (very) last minute change of heart and having sex with Hannah McKay instead of killing her. And the consequences of that act are spilling out all over the place in a way sure to define the remainder of this season - and very likely all of the final season eight - in the blackly comic, Holly Dale directed episode Chemistry.Let's just get the sidelines out of the way quickly, yes? Because that's what the show did with them this week, anyway.Joey's gambit worked as far as getting Isaak Sirko sprung from jail, which gets the lovely Nadia out of immediate danger. But the promise to free...

Dear God Yes! See Exploitation Homage DEAR GOD NO! for Free in London!

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 02:00 PM PST

While certainly not to everyone's tastes, there's no denying that James Bickert's Dear God No! has its heart in the right place - just before it's ripped out and eaten by a big hairy woodland monster. Shot on Super 16mm and harking back to the exploitation biker movies that played the 70s drive-in circuit, the film promises plenty of blood, boobs and beer-chugging biker gangs - and if you live in London, you can catch it on the big screen absolutely free.Hitting UK DVD on 14 January courtesy of Monster Pictures, Dear God No! will receive its UK premiere this Thursday, 15 November, at The Horse Hospital, as part of Bizarre Magazine's monthly CUT screenings (see link below for more details). There will also be...

Short Film, Short Review: WWI Set COWARD Makes A Strong Case For Old Fashioned Sentiment

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 01:30 PM PST

We here at Twitch like to champion short films every chance we get, which outside of festivals and the occasional stellar short shared online, is somewhat rare. A while back we got wind of what appeared to be a rather impressive production coming out of Ireland and the UK: a WWI set short called Coward. Now ramping up for what is sure to be a healthy festival run, here's my take on David Roddham's film. Following two cousins from the sun-dappled countryside of Ireland to the snow and shit streaked trenches of Belgium, Coward focuses itself on the inner prejudices and politics, and eventual injustices of the British Army during the First Word War. In the crosshairs as the Irish cousins, actors Martin McCann and...

Retro Teaser For Paul Schrader's THE CANYONS

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 01:00 PM PST

Indie maverick genius or a self indulgent wank? It's hard to imagine critical responses to Paul Schrader's upcoming The Canyons varying too greatly from either of those two poles. Written by Bret Easton Ellis, crowd funded on Kickstarter and boasting an odd cast of Lindsay Lohan, porn star James Deen and director Gus Van Sant, The Canyons has just released a new teaser with a deliberate 1950s vibe. By which I mean they overlaid some fake film grain.THE CANYONS is a contemporary L.A. noir from director Paul Schrader, writer Bret Easton Ellis, and producer Braxton Pope about the dangers of sexual obsession and ambition, both personally and professionally, among a group of young people in their 20′s and how one chance meeting connected to the...

Japanese Teaser For THE HOBBIT Wants You To Share In An Adventure

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 12:00 PM PST

Ah, Japan. You know how to cut a trailer over there.Despite - or perhaps because of - a love for JRR Tolkein going back to my childhood and a corresponding love for Peter Jackson's adaptations of The Lord Of The Rings, this whole Hobbit thing has left me feeling very nervous. The poor reception to the 48fps projection was one factor, the expansion of a relatively slender book to a whopping three movies a significant second factor, and the marketing campaign thus far has just felt ... off.But then there's the Japanese, who always seem to know how to cut a good trailer. And this latest minute long effort for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is no exception. Very nice. Check it below....

Finland Gets GLORIOUSLY WASTED

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 11:00 AM PST

It may be tempting to consider Lauri Maijala's Gloriously Wasted something of a Finnish answer to the success of The Hangover. And I'm sure the timing of this film making it to the big screen certainly has something to do with the success of the American franchise but there's more to it than that. For one thing, this is an adaptation of a hugely popular - and pre-existing - series of books. And, for another, it does not appear that anyone in this film is ever sober long enough to be hung over.Juha Berg (Joonas Saartamo) is a 30-year-old hopeless drunk in the Kallio neighborhood of Helsinki. Juha doesn't have the first intention of changing his way of life - just the opposite. He really...

The Skies Become Less Friendly With Finnish Comedy THE HIJACK THAT WENT SOUTH

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 10:00 AM PST

The airplane hijacking is most assuredly high on the list of no-go areas for big studio comedies in post-911 America. When it comes down to it, in fact, I don't think I can come up with a single comedy that has gone down this particular road at all, the idea of an armed gunman taking over a plane not striking most as particularly fertile comedy ground, apparently. But the Finns are not most people and they've done just that. The year is 1978. Aaro Lamminparras is a down-on-his-luck businessman, always patriotic and full of good intentions - but often cheated by his partners. One drunken evening in Oulu he argues with his wife on the telephone and ends up spending the night with his friend, sergeant...

Hopkins And Mirren Chew The Scenery (And Toast) In New HITCHCOCK Clip

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 09:00 AM PST

Here's the thing with Sacha Gervasi's upcoming Hitchcock. No matter what else may happen we're going to be treated to a whole lot of Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren doing their respective things. And those two do their things very well, indeed. And given that Gervasi's heavy metal doc Anvil was a hugely entertaining affair I have decently high hopes for the skill level on the other side of the camera as well.Hitchcock tells the story behind the scenes of the filming of Psycho and it does so with a pretty stellar cast top to bottom, James D'Arcy, Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Biel rounding things out. Check out an extended clip below....

Bloody First Teaser For SAVAGED Jumps Rope With Your Entrails

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 08:30 AM PST

How do you infuse the rape-revenge genre with a bit of fresh blood? Well, you could try having your victim be possessed by the spirit of an Apache warrior, for one thing. That would do it. And that's exactly what director Michael Ojeda is doing with the upcoming Savaged. While travelling across country, Zoe, a lovely deaf mute woman, stumbles on a horrific crime - a gang of rednecks slaughtering two Native American boys. Zoe's brave attempt to save one of the boys seals her fate. She is captured, raped and left for dead. When an Indian shaman finds her clinging to life in a shallow grave he attempts to save her - but something goes horribly wrong. The spirit of an ancient Apache warrior takes...

Euro Beat: French Theaters Boycott SINISTER Because of Unruly Horror Fans

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 08:00 AM PST

More than 40 French theaters have abruptly canceled their bookings of the horror film Sinister, which opened last week in France. The decision is not a reaction to the films content, but rather, its fans. Or at least, those who theater managers presume to be its fans. Wild Bunch, the distributor of the film, issued a statement explaining that many theaters had pulled the film because audiences at screenings of Paranormal Activity 4, which opened the week before, got a bit out of hand. According to a hilarious parenthetical in the statement, "out of hand" in this case meant "looting candy counters, insulting cashiers, urinating on seats, etc." You can, I suppose, use your imagination to decide what on earth they mean by "etc." So...

Review: THUPPAKKI Is A Beautifully-Constructed Hot Mess

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 04:24 AM PST

Diwali is upon us, and for fans of Indian film, that means that we can see the year's biggest titles as they all flood the market at once. Last year AR Murugadoss stepped into the Diwali ring with Surya in 7aam Arivu, a high-concept disaster that squandered its early promise by shoehorning in unwieldy masala tropes that completely broke the rhythm of the main storyline. The same day saw the release of Tamil cinema's other big Diwali release, Velayudham, which starred the people's hero, Ilayathalapathy Vijay as a rural superhero. One of these films was supposed to be a new kind of blockbuster, and the other all-out entertainer, but neither came out entirely successful. However, this year the main forces behind last year's Tamil clash...
