ATTACK ON TITAN: Higuchi Shinji Takes Over The Live Action Adaptation

The Titans may be walking after all!Isayama Hajime's Attack On Titan has proven to be one of the most successful manga / anime properties to emerge from Japan in some time, the story of a low-tech future earth where the survivors of humanity live in massive walled cities for protection from a race of flesh eating giants proving enormously popular both on the page and the screen around the globe. All of which led to immense anticipation for the announced live action version of the film which was originally set up with Confessions helmer Nakashima Tetsuya at the helm. Great property, great director, can't go wrong, right? Except it did, and Nakashima left the project a year ago over disagreements with the direction being taken...

Get Control of Yourself and Put on Some Trousers! New DOM HEMINGWAY Trailer

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 05:45 PM PST

The marketing machine not shy about throwing in most of the good bits from Richard Shepard's Jude Law starring gangster effort Dom Hemingway in order to get your butt in the cinema. To eyes that have seen (and very much enjoyed) the film things all appear a bit spoiler-ish. Nevertheless, the latest red-banded Dom Hemingway preview has landed.  Richard E. Grant's wonderful hangdog face is on display, even if the focus is clearly on Law sporting a big personality, and an even bigger mouth in this delightfully bombastic trailer that is cheeky in more ways than one....

17th Japanese Film Festival 2013 Review: THE DEVIL'S PATH Is Murder Most Mediocre

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST

Supposedly not a film for the faint at heart, The Devil's Path starts with a series of disturbing Yakuza psychopath activities that excitedly recall the manic darkness of I Saw The Devil or, closer to home, Miike's Lessons Of The Evil. This prelude into hardcore crime is abruptly cut by an elongated, tedious procedural before veering into a plot that is unsure what to do with itself.Charmless protagonist Fujii (Yamada Takayuki) is a reporter drawn to a letter of confession from Suda, a murderer on death row. Suda claims there are other sinister acts he and his boss and mentor Kimura (Lily Franky) committed and gives Fujii a series of painfully slow cookie crumbs to pursue. Between convincing his editor and ignoring his demented mother...

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

Masacre en Xoco is Cineteca Nacional's annual gift to fans of genre cinema and, actually, the one and only opportunity in Mexico City to watch 35mm prints of both classic and cotemporary horror films. Curated by José Luis Ortega and Mauricio Matamoros Durán, the fourth edition of Masacre en Xoco is this year's last film event in Mexico, taking place from December 26 to 29. Masacre en Xoco 2013 is dedicated to the Panic Movement, paying special homage to El Topo and The Holy Mountain cinematographer Rafael Corkidi, who sadly passed away in September. Also, South Korea is the guest country and, as previously announced, the genre festival Feratum will share a couple of its titles: Thanatomorphose and Visceral: Between the Ropes of Madness. Mexican...

Korean Box Office: Sci-fi AM 11:00 Clocks in Middling Debut

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST

With 1.77 million admissions, business was still a little down from this time last year (when admission topped two million) due to a lack of strong new releases. Though with a 60% market share, local releases are still in good shape. This month's new films have been relatively low profile but things should pick up in the coming weeks with some higher profile domestic films, not to mention the invasion of Hollywood holiday fare. collapse" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="556"> Title Release Date Market Share Weekend Total Screens 1 AM 11:00 11/28/13 21.30% 377,166 449,090 512 2 Marriage Blue 11/21/13 13.20% 233,139 841,563 421 3 Hunger Games: Catching Fire (us) 11/21/13 11.70% 206,554 869,235 416 4 Tumbleweed 11/28/13 11.90% 201,916 256,247 414 5 Friend 2...

French Trailer for BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Shows a Dark, Rich Adventure

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

I'll admit it, I'm still a sucker for a good costume drama/folk tale. Not the Disney-fied ones that sanitize, but ones that harken back to the dark underbelly of those tales are warnings and cautions about morality and behaviour. And so I was very excited when I first heard that Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf, Silent Hill) was going back to original original story by Madame de Villeneuve l for his version of Beauty and the Beast, my expectations starting rising. Now, we have the first trailer. It certainly looks like a Gans film: full of rich colour, a creepy castle, a dark villain (This time around, Vincent Cassel seems to be getting the whole lion's body), a beautiful maid, intrigue, and hefty historical context...
