Review: MICHAEL KOHLHAAS, A Sombre Crusade For Vengeance And Justice Posted: 02 Dec 2013 10:00 PM PST Arnaud des Pallieres adapts Heinrich von Kleist's hugely influential novel into a heartbreaking story of injustice and revenge in 16th Century France, centred around an incredible performance from Mads Mikkelsen.Michael Kohlhaas (Mikkelsen), a respected horse trader and family man, is stopped on the road by soldiers in the employ of the region's new young Baron, and fined two of his finest mares. When Kohlhaas' attempts to appeal the decision are repeatedly dismissed, the situation quickly escalates and Kohlhaas sets out on a personal crusade to see his rights restored and horses returned. Events take an increasingly bloody and tragic turn as Kohlhaas incites rebellion in the local peasant population, until he has amassed a small army that terrorises the community.Michael Kohlhaas is the second cinematic... |
Review: Though Predictable, THE KEEPER OF LOST CAUSES Is An Unsettling Crime Thriller Posted: 02 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST Crime thrillers undoubtedly play a huge role in the creation of Danish culture. There is a countless list of gritty, dark, suspenseful titles that made this particular genre a trademark of sorts of both Danish literature and films. Over the course of years they've gained fame across the world as one of the most complex, compelling and violent thrillers ever, but what's more interesting is that it's still relatively easy to point out many new positions that look truly fresh and enticing. One of the very recent additions to the crime genre is The Keeper of Lost Causes (Kvinden i buret), based on an international bestseller written by Jussi Adler-Olsen, directed by Mikkel Norgaard (Klown), and scripted by Nikolaj Arcel (the original The Girl with the... |
Exclusive Trailer Premiere: Take A Musical Trip To PATCH TOWN Posted: 02 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST Twitch is proud to host this world exclusive premiere of the latest trailer for Craig Goodwill's Patch Town. The film is based on the award winning short (that Twitch covered way back in 2011) which played TIFF, Cannes and a slew of other fests to much acclaim. Now in 2013, the story has been expanded to feature length, using a bunch of the original cast and including a few new suprises. Patch Town is a quirky mix of genres and tone. It's got a David Lynch-meets-Little Shop Of Horrors vibe, complete with a dash of Cabbage Patch Kids nostalgia thrown in for good measure. There are strong performances and appropriately moody visuals, and having seen the finished project it's sure to find many fans of... |

13 Great Mondo Prints You Can Buy For Less Than $100 Posted: 02 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST Every other Thursday it's the same thing: you try to clear a couple of hours of your schedule, pick up a big cup of coffee, sit in front of your computer and start refreshing the same page over and over again until the drop happens. Most often than not, it's a frustrating experience, because you're competing with hundreds and hundreds of Mondo fans all over the world to get that limited screenprint and if you're not fast enough - and even if you are - you may have to head over to eBay and pray for not having to sell your house to afford the piece you are after. Mexican Drag Queens Make LONELY STARS. Watch The First Footage. Posted: 02 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST It was all the way back in 2007 that I first came across Mexican director Fernando Urdapilleta (center in the picture above). The cause was an utterly fantastic vagina dentata short film that he had directed while in film school titled Cosita Linda and after programming the short in a few festivals, Urdapilleta joined a short list of directors I have maintained for years who I email every three to six months and ask, "Why haven't you made a movie yet?"Urdapilleta has now made a movie.Titled Estrellas Solitarias (or Lonely Stars) the picture is a John Waters influenced tale of drag queens in Mexico City. And though the film is still in post production and the official trailer has not yet arrived, Urdapilleta has put... |
Twitchvision: Jason Gorber Talks FROZEN, ARMSTRONG LIE, PHILOMENA And More Posted: 02 Dec 2013 07:30 AM PST Back again this week after about 12 hours of travel, only managed to make a few stumbles that I'll directly attribute to jetlag. Still, got to gush about the people of Tallinn, Estonia that hosted me for the Black Nights Film Festival, as well as chat about Frozen, Disney's latest film, Philomena with the incomparable Judi Dench, and Alex Gibney's The Armstrong Lie.... |
Posted: 02 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST Japanese director Watanabe Shinichiro is responsible for one of the truly landmark moments in contemporary anime with his noir infused tale of space bounty hunters Cowboy Bebop and he's back in familiar territory with his upcoming Space Dandy - the story of an alien hunter with his cat and robot sidekicks - only this time the noir has seemingly been replaced by a liberal dose of psychedelic mushrooms.Yep, it's brash and colorful and more than a little bit silly and everything we've seen from Space Dandy thus far looks more than up to Watanabe's usual high standards. Cue the latest trailer, one that includes action, heaving bosoms, laser blasts and - at the 34 second mark - what appears to be a fairly graphic alien... |
TV Beat: THE BLACKLIST Ups The Ante Posted: 02 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST It was already a good show, one of the best new broadcast TV series of the year. And then Joe Carnahan blew up The Blacklist, directing and co-writing an episode that was bloodier, more urgent, and more painful than anything that had come before. James Spader, who emerged in the mid-80s as a young, slick, oily, yupppie-in-training (Tuff Turf, Pretty in Pink), is the anchor and main selling point of the series. The character he plays, Raymond "Red" Reddington, is a former government agent who turned traitor, becoming a middle man available to broker deals for and in behalf of international criminals and rogue governments alike, to whoever can pay the highest price. In the first episode, he turns himself in to the FBI, with... |
THE STRANGE COLOUR OF YOUR BODY'S TEARS: Melt Your Brain With The Full Trailer For AMER Duo's Next Posted: 02 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST Brussels based directing duo Bruno Forzani and Helene Cattet made quite a stir around the world with their debut feature Amer. A gorgeous re-imagining of giallo tropes and styles the film become a major buzz title on the festival circuit that year and built a loyal fan base around the world. And those fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the duo's sophomore film, The Strange Colour Of Your Body's Tears (L'etrange couleur des larmes de ton corps), particularly as word began to circulate from the festival circuit that this one is perhaps even more sumptuously designed as it pushes the neo-giallo experiment to even further extremes.Well, here's another taste. With a 2014 theatrical release in Europe approaching the full trailer for the film has... |
