BREAKING: Tom Hardy Backs Out Of Miike's THE OUTSIDER, Preproduction Put On Hold

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST

Looking forward to seeing Tom Hardy in the lead of Miike Takashi's English language feature The Outsider? Brace yourself for disappointment. Twitch has learned that, with preproduction already under way, Hardy has backed out of the project and will no longer star. While the search is apparently on for a replacement preproduction has been put on hold and with director Miike committed to multiple projects in 2014 we are also told that Hardy's departure will push the film outside of Miike's window of availability meaning the film is also in the market for a new director. Will producers be able to come up with an alternate and keep the project together? Time will tell ......

Learning From The Masters Of Cinema: Andrew Bujalski's COMPUTER CHESS

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 12:00 AM PST

Last year the Masters of Cinema series made a somewhat controversial move when they announced that a pair of contemporary films from two up-and-coming independent American filmmakers were being added to the collection. Antonio Campos' Simon Killer and Andrew Bujalski's Computer Chess would be sharing shelf space with revered auteurs like Fellini, Lang and Welles under the collective "Masters of Cinema" banner. While this is not the first time "new" films have been included - Johnnie To' Mad Detective and Kurosawa Kiyoshi's Tokyo Sonata were among the very first titles released on Blu-ray - it was difficult to argue that either Campos or Bujalski had yet established themselves nationally or internationally, nor were their films likely to be particularly well-known or appreciated, if at all.While...

Sundance 2014 Review: BOYHOOD Is An Extraordinary Chronicle Of Growing Up In America

Posted: 20 Jan 2014 03:16 PM PST

12 years off and on in production, and clearly in the works for a lot longer, Richard Linklater's latest is a rare cinematic feat for reasons that go quite beyond its already unorthodox shooting schedule. Call it "This American Boy's Life", Linklater's careful, considerate and contemplative chronicle of growing up white and middle class in America is extraordinary merely because it is -- for being white and middle class in America --so ordinary, and yet...Boyhood begins with a shot that feels lifted from the director's animated dream alley spectacle Waking Life. We are witness to the sky: a brilliantly crisp blue, and fluffy clouds that are like out of, well... a dream. In one shot, even before we see our hero, Linklater establishes a through...

Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy will be available for the first time on Blu-ray this Tuesday (tomorrow, January 20). It is a comprehensive look at the history of the Nightmare on Elm Street horror franchise. From its genesis in the mind of creator Wes Craven, being bought by New Line Cinema, to the six sequels (reboot not included of course) and anthology television series Freddy's Nightmares, the history of the franchise is pretty well covered. Filmmakers Daniel Farranda and Andrew Kasch speak with pretty much everyone and anyone involved. Key figures like Craven, Robert Englund and New Line Cinema CEO Robert Shaye who bought the film when no one else would, to nearly every key actor in the film, directors, screenwriters, composers, and visual...

Sundance Speed Dating with... LAND HO! Cast and Crew

Posted: 20 Jan 2014 10:00 AM PST

Co-writers and directors Martha Stephens and Aaron Katz bring a funny, sweet, bromance like none you've seen before to Sundance. One-liners from first-time actor/full-time physician Earl Lynn Nelson (who is Stephens' cousin and someone she always wanted to make a movie with) riddle the opening, and immediately comfort the audience into going along on their quirky ride through Iceland. Twitch sat down with Stephens, Katz, Nelson and co-star Paul Eenhoorn (beloved from last year's Sundance Audience Award-winner This is Martin Bonner) after the premiere, which was given a standing-O, to try and pull out some more inspirational one-liners. Twitch: if you weren't acting or writing/directing what would you be doing?Martha Stephens: I would be have a farm in the middle of nowhere in West Virginia and have...

Twitch's Favorite Frankensteins -- And The Monsters They Created

Posted: 20 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST

The imminent theatrical release in North America of I, Frankenstein on Friday, January 24, gives us an excuse to express our collective love for the mad scientist known as Frankenstein -- and the monsters he created. As the title of the new movie indicates, popular culture has often confused Frankenstein (the scientist) with The Monster, bestowing the creature with the creator's name. But Mary Shelley's original novel tapped directly into our primal consciousness, and any confusion about names pales in comparison to the fears, terrors, and thrills that raise goose-pimples when the good doctor cries out "It's alive!" and his monster lumbers to life. Our picks reflect the individual tastes of the writers who contributed; what say you, dear reader, as to your favorite Frankenstein...
