Danny Trejo And Luke Goss Start Shooting THE NIGHT CREW Posted: 18 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST Bounty hunters and cartel killers have invaded Palm Springs, as production begins on The Night Crew, just one of the many projects that Danny Trejo is slated to star in this year. Trejo is working again with director Christian Sesma; they worked together on Shoot The Hero. For that matter so are some of the film's other stars, Luke Goss and Bokeem Woodbine. Other regulars include Jason Mewes and Paul Sloan. Canadian actress Chasty Bellesteros plays the mysterious Chinese woman mentioned below and Brazilian native Luciana Faulhaber adds some spice to the bounty hunter team.Yet, I am puzzled because evidence suggests (The Night Crew Facebook page) that filming has been going on since early December, and Sesma is already filming his next feature, AWOL, but who... |

Slamdance 2014 Review: ELLIOT Will Make You Believe In Canada's First Action Hero Posted: 17 Jan 2014 04:00 PM PST Yes. You read that right. Canada's first action hero. China has Jackie Chan and Jet Li. America has Arnold and Sly. Europe has Jean-Claude Van Damme. And if Elliot Scott has his way, Canada will have... Elliot "White Lightning" Scott. Documentarians Jaret Belliveau and Matthew Bauckman come to Halifax, Nova Scotia to document what will be Elliot's third feature, Blood Fight, a no-budget martial arts B-movie. Just like his first two features, it has the potential to be a "great Saturday night movie to watch with a few beers and the buddies." Elliot tell us this, sitting on the floor, Chuck Norris and JCVD DVDs spread out at his feet. He then follows that up with "I'm happy if people say stuff like that... or... |
Dante Lam, Fruit Chan, Vietnamese SciFi And A Whole Lot More Added To The Berlin Lineup! Posted: 17 Jan 2014 02:30 PM PST The 2014 Berlinale just got a whole lot bigger and a whole lot more interesting with the complete lineups for the Panorama section and the Berlin Specials announced today. Given that the Panorama includes That Demon Within by Dante Lam, a new horror / thriller from Dumplings director Fruit Chan and a Vietnamese science fiction offering titled 2030 my hunch is that this is where most of the interest will lie for Twitch readers but the Specials section - including bigger titles such as American Hustle and Diego Luna's Cesar Chavez biopic - has plenty to offer as well. Here are the complete announcements: With 24 of them world premieres, 36 films from 29 countries will give an overview of current international fictional-feature production. Most recently... |

Slamdance 2014 Review: COPENHAGEN, A Heartfelt Ode To The City, To Sorrow, And To Change Posted: 17 Jan 2014 01:30 PM PST William is a twenty-something American traveling in Europe. Except he's Canadian 'cause "that's still a thing right?" He's obnoxious, rude, a veritable asshole, putting anything he's got left (a potent mix of self-loathing, male ego and hormones) into drinking and fucking. He's also the third wheel. But when his best pal Jeremy goes off to London to get hitched to his girlfriend, William is sidelined in Copenhagen. He is left with a letter from his estranged and deceased father to a Danish grandfather neither of them never really knew. He is left with his sorrow, his anger, and his doubt. He is left with an address. He is left with a moment; the moment and the choice to grow up and let go.Adrift in a... |
Sundance 2014 Review: WHIPLASH Confidently Marches To A Different Beat Posted: 17 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST It's a pretty quick turnaround to go from Sundance 2013 award-winning short film to Sundance 2014 opening nighter. But for 28-year-old director Damien Chazelle, when opportunity knocks, there's no need to bide your time. It's no surprise that Jason Blum and Jason Reitman believe in this young director enough to produce this sophomore feature; a movie truly brimming with confidence. Chazelle is a serious new talent, and with Whiplash we're just starting to see him flex his muscles. Expertly wielding his sharpest tools, Chazelle has cast Miles Teller as Andrew, a talented young drummer in his first year of study at one of the country's best music conservatories. Teller is one of Hollywood's finest young actors, and his Andrew is meek and lacks confidence... |
Slamdance 2014 Review: LITTLE HOPE WAS ARSON Finds Forgivness In Darkness Alight Posted: 17 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST I've never been one to articulate very well my stance on documentaries as a storytelling medium. Ironic perhaps given my standing here at Twitch, but I can count on own my two hands the number of docs I've reviewed (though that is no clear indication of how many I actually watch). I've also been of a mind that documentary subjects, IE content, usually trumps the form and that a marriage between the two can be difficult. The content usually being an extraordinary or humbling story that's worthwhile to know, its form perhaps a collection of "talking head" witnesses and experts recounting a series of events, sometimes sensationally illustrated with graphics and news footage to such a moot point that I can tune out. Or often... |

Rebels With A Cause: Looking Back On Slamdance's First 20 Years Posted: 17 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST Salt Lake City, Utah -- 1995. A group of young filmmakers don't get their features into Sundance. That's the line we've heard countless times before. Rejection, dejection, deflation... where's a guiding light? Where to go? So much hard work after so much hard work and for what? Well, for Peter Baxter, Dan Mirvish, Paul Rachman, Jon Fitzgerald and Shane Kuhn, plus a handful of other co-conspirators that showed up in the city up the road from the home of Sundance in Park City, they had something... with stacks of reels, their cherished finished films, a hope and an idea: "Anarchy in Utah", a new film festival that championed the DIY gumption the American Indie scene had been built on. Their fate was in their own... |

Sundance 2014 Review: LILTING Gets Lost In Translation Posted: 17 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST A quiet room, muted colors, old wallpaper from a bygone era. A hushed winter light drapes itself across the space. An elderly mother looks at her adult son and asks, "What's wrong?" The son insists nothing is, and he'd like to invite her over for dinner. A young woman, a nursing assistant, comes in to put a new light bulb in the lamp. The mother is caught off guard, her son, lying on the bed a moment ago, is gone. He is dead. He has been dead. These are the opening moments of Hong Khaou's debut feature, a film that struggles to find a cohesive through line, while offering up some beautifully tranquil and melancholic imagery. The mother is Jun, a Cambodian Chinese born woman who has... |
