Mondo Gallery Presents Disney Themed Show EVERYTHING'S POSSIBLE At SXSW

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 10:30 PM PST

Mondo has put up some of its most impressive gallery shows during SXSW in the last few years, including a Tyler Stout/Ken Taylor exhibit and another one entirely dedicated to HBO's Game of Thrones. It couldn't be different this year, but the good folks behind the art division of Alamo Drafthouse are really going the extra mile this time to present "Nothing's Impossible", a Disney themed show with new and original artwork by names such as Aaron Horkey, Ken Taylor, Martin Ansin and Jason Edmiston, among others (check the impressive lineup in the image below). Here's the full press release: Mondo, the collectible art division of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, is partnering with Disney's "Oh My Disney" blog to unveil "Nothing's Impossible," a gallery event at...

Sundance 2014 Review: WHITEY Presents Criminal Ethics As A Spectrum Of Grey

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 09:30 PM PST

It is no small irony that a film titled Whitey is actually so morally grey. Once again, one of the great documentary auteurs Joe Berlinger has provided a wonderfully nuanced take on an extraordinarily complex case, providing the viewers with the morass of conflicting truths that underlay the celebrated tale of James "Whitey" Bulger. At its best, this film joins the pantheon of great crime documentaries, spelling out the miscues and manipulations, raising a fundamental question - was the justice department and the FBI culpable in allowing Bulger to live the life of a murderous gangster and eventually to escape justice for decades? The defense attorneys for Bulger throw out the worth "truth", saying that their client simply wants to lay bare the actual events. Wrapped up...

PREMATURE Trailer Promises GROUNDHOG DAY With Orgasms

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST

Announced yesterday as a selection of the SXSW film festival, Dan Beers' Premature is built on a very simple - and very funny - premise: It's Groundhog Day, in high school, with orgasms. Here's how the festival describes it:Rob is facing the biggest day of his life. He needs to nail a college interview ensuring his admittance to his parents' beloved alma mater, keep his cool when life-long crush Angela (nicknamed 'After School Special' for a reason) finally seems to show interest, and deal with his best friends as they realize their high school days are ending. As pressure mounts, something weird happens. He finds himself reliving the day's events over and over again. Is Rob stuck in a dream? Experiencing déjà vu? Having a...

Nick Frost And Chris O'Dowd Face Off In Second CUBAN FURY Trailer

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 11:30 AM PST

Nick Frost and Chris O'Dowd will face off on UK dance floors with the February 14th release of salsa themed romantic comedy Cuban Fury. Yes, Frost dances. More than that, he's trained to do so by a badass former champion played by Deadwood's Ian McShane while Bridesmaids nice guy Chris O'Dowd is just plain evil. Yep, this one exists to indulge in some very against-type casting and the Frost-O'Dowd factor should be enough to get your attention. Should you need more convincing, a new trailer for the film has just arrived. Take a look below....

Watch The New, Blood Soaked Japanese Trailer For The Mo Brothers' KILLERS

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST

Is there a trailer rating higher than red-band? Because if there is, it seems entirely likely that's what this new Japanese theatrical trailer for Killers - the sophomore feature by The Mo Brothers - would earn.A dark and intense thriller about a pair of men drawn inexorably to violence who discover one another online - one in Tokyo, the other in Jakarta - Killers releases theatrically in Japan this week following a successful premiere at Sundance. Here's how Sundance describes it:Mr. Nomura is an eerily handsome, sharply dressed, sociopathic serial killer who preys on the women of Tokyo. In Jakarta, a world-weary journalist named Bayu finds himself unexpectedly falling into vigilantism after brutally killing two sadistic robbers. When each posts videos of his violent sprees...

Jesse Eisenberg Is Zack Snyder's Lex Luthor In BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 10:11 AM PST

Via press release, Warner Bros. has announced that Jesse Eisenberg has been cast as Lex Luthor in the upcoming, still untitled sequel to Man of Steel. Jeremy Irons will play Alfred, Bruce Wayne's faithful man-servant. Eisenberg is certainly an unexpected choice to play Superman's most famous opponent. Will be essaying a nerdy character immersed in technology? With the creative and corporate forces involved, it's impossible to say at this point, but it gives the project some additional buzz. In the official statement, Snyder commented: "Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman's rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What's great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He's a complicated and sophisticated character whose...

FICUNAM 2014 News: Sono Sion's WHY DON'T YOU PLAY IN HELL To Premiere In Mexico

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 08:30 AM PST

The International Film Festival of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (FICUNAM) will celebrate its fourth edition from February 27 to March 9 in Mexico City. The press conference is yet to happen but little by little the organizers are revealing this year's lineup and so far the news that will get you, the Twitch reader, most excited is definitely this: FICUNAM is set to host the Mexican premiere of Sono Sion's acclaimed latest film, Why Don't You Play In Hell! In part, this is not a surprise since FICUNAM also brought Sono's Guilty of Romance in 2012 and Roger Koza (one of the festival's programmers) recently organized a poll, a la Sight & Sound, with the best of 2013 according to critics, filmmakers and...

CAPTAIN AMERICA Loves Football! Watch The New WINTER SOLDIER Teaser!

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 08:15 AM PST

So, apparently there's a very large sporting event which nobody is allowed to call by name without paying for the right to do so and which drives people into a marketing frenzy coming this weekend and among the frenzied are Marvel, who are releasing a new teaser for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This is not that teaser. It is, however, a teaser for that teaser. It's brief, but hopes you will find it suitably heroic. Take a look below....

Ambulante 2014: Twitch Picks 10 Must-See Documentaries

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST

While Ambulante 2014 kicked off yesterday in downtown Mexico City with a public screening of The Square, today (1/31) is the first real day of activities. More than thirty Mexico City venues are ready to offer documentaries from this Friday until February 13, and after that Ambulante moves to eleven other states of the country (Guerrero, Zacatecas, Puebla, Veracruz, Nuevo León, Coahuila, Michoacán, Chiapas, Jalisco, Baja California, and Oaxaca). Personally, I really like this documentary festival and this year's lineup is again quite promising. Ragnar Bragason's METALHEAD Sets New Record With 16 Edda Nominations

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST

Icelandic drama Metalhead won a fair bit of love in these pages when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival - see the links below for a full review - and it appears that the response in Iceland has been even stronger. The nominations for the Icelandic Edda awards - the local equivalent of the Oscars - have been announced and Metalhead has set a new record with a whopping sixteen nominations. For those keeping score that's a nomination in every single category that it is eligible with the exception of Lead Actor, probably because there's not a male character in the film significant enough to really be considered more than a support part.Check the complete list of nominations here....

Sundance 2014 Review: CAMP X-RAY, A Work Of Moral Ambivalence

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST

I was busy processing the ending of Camp X-Ray, a film about a soldier relating to prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, when I saw the credit - Executive Produced by David Gordon Green. It's hard to say just what effect this great filmmaker had on Peter Sattler's film, but it did lead me to think a little harder about it than I might have otherwise. And I've concluded it just might be a very good film, almost a great one, if you buy one thing - its protagonist is an idiot. Now, this will be a bit spoilery, but you'll forgive me, as the ending of the film may either ruin it or make it something kind of great. Before we get to that, let me state unequivocally...

Ambulante 2014 Review: COFFEE (CAFÉ), Another Look At Mexican Rural Life That Is Slightly Above Average

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST

One of my favorite Mexican films of 2013 was Adrián Ortiz's documentary Elevator (Elevador), a really interesting look at the current decadent state of a Mexico City multi-family complex that once was a promised land. Now at Ambulante 2014, Elevator's cinematographer, Hatuey Viveros, is world premiering his first documentary (and second feature film overall as a director) with Coffee (Café). At first sight, Coffee seems to be more of the same, in terms of having another documentary that explores rural Mexico; it follows a family's life in a marginal zone of Cuetzalan (a Mexican town). Actually, Ambulante's synopsis puts it as the real-life, cannibal-free, Somos Lo Que Hay... well, sort of: a family loses its leader (the father) and "his absence transforms the lives that...
