Zhang Yimou, the acclaimed mainland Chinese director behind such critical and commercial hits as Raise The Red Lantern, Hero and The Flowers Of War, is reportedly in talks with Universal Studios to direct an English language adaptation of the Robert Ludlum novel The Parsifal Mosaic. The novel tells the story of a US black-ops agent, Michael Havelock, who first witnesses the assassination of his lover, believed to be a KGB double-agent, only to later see her alive and well in Rome. Taking matters into his own hands, Havelock uncovers an international conspiracy with a mole known as Parsifal at its centre.A script already exists for the project, penned by David Self (Thirteen Days, Road to Perdition), while Brian Grazer and Ron Howard are on board to...

Review: ENDLESS LOVE Is Somewhat A Sure Thing

Posted: 13 Feb 2014 04:00 PM PST

The new teen melodrama Endless Love commits a myriad of sins. And I'm not just referring to the hot and bothered young couple on the poster. It's been said that there's nothing new under the sun, and this sufficiently bronzed film might just prove it. Here we have a complete teenage girl wish-fulfillment romance, shamelessly checking off the squares of what we've come to expect in such a movie: - The chronically unnoticed recluse who no one ever talks to being played by the most ridiculously gorgeous actress in the whole movie - Poor little rich girl falls for greasy heartthrob with a heart of gold - They've secretly always loved one another, but couldn't get up the nerve to speak up until the doomsday clock of high school...

WINTER'S TALE: Academy Award-Winning Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman Talks About His Directorial Debut

Posted: 13 Feb 2014 03:00 PM PST

One of Hollywood's most successful screenwriters, Akiva Goldsman is the man behind films like The Client, I Am Legend, The Da Vinci Code, and the Oscar-winning A Beautiful Mind. Goldsman makes his directorial début with the romantic Winter's Tale, a time-tripping allegory about the magic of love and faith. He spoke with me about stepping out from behind the script and the personal significance of the story. The Lady Miz Diva: After many years working as an award-winning screenwriter, what is it like for you to step out from behind the script with WINTER'S TALE? Akiva Goldsman: It's very, very anxiety-provoking, actually. I never quite understood exactly how remarkably personal to do this job and I've been calling all my director friends and sort of just telling...

Review: THE RETURNED, Protecting Your Loved One When He's A Zombie

Posted: 13 Feb 2014 02:00 PM PST

They are misunderstood and stigmatized. They live under a cloud of fear and suspicion. They are subject to physical and verbal assaults. They fear that the supply of the drug that keeps them alive will soon run out. They are officially called "the returned," and in Manuel Carballo's film (aka Retornados), they are people who have been infected with a fatal virus but were lucky enough to be treated quickly. The price they must pay is high. They must take a daily drug dose, or the infection will spread throughout their body, transforming them into flesh-eating creatures. No wonder they're known as zombies. The setting is the modern day, but it's really an alternate world, one in which an infection broke out in the 1980s...

Berlinale 2014 Review: ALOFT Doesn't Quite Soar

Posted: 13 Feb 2014 10:05 AM PST

The sense of touch can be tricky to convey in film. A filmmaker must rely upon visually accurate information in order for the spectator to 'feel' the sensation. Touch is very prominent in director and writer Claudia Llosa's Aloft, how it conveys love, hate, fear, anger, and sorrow. Llosa is a steady hand at the wheel, giving us a moving, intimate drama with fine performances by Jennifer Connelly and Cillian Murphy. One half of the film is set twenty years earlier: Nana (Connelly) lives in northern Manitoba, working part-time on a farm (where she is having an affair with her married boss) and trying to raise her two young sons, Ivan and Gully. Gully has a terminal illness; in a last-ditch effort to save him, she...

Gary Oldman Meets RoboCoppola

Posted: 13 Feb 2014 09:00 AM PST

Yup, that's Berlin based madman Daniele Rizzo clad in "Italian steel" (aka plastic) as he meets with the cast and crew of RoboCop on their German press junket and - as is typically the case with Rizzo - the results are a lot of goofy fun. Oldman seems to roll with this one the best of the lot but everyone seems more than happy to play along ... check it out below....

Darren Wants To Borrow Damo's Lighter.

Posted: 13 Feb 2014 08:30 AM PST

Australian animator Michael Cusack delivers a charming (not really) slice of life in his new animated short film Train Station, in which he demonstrates that the people who loiter about train stations are pretty much the same all the world over. The language is very much NSFW. Check it out below....

Vietnam Makes A Splash In The Horror Arena With Fantastic Trailer For Ham Tran's HOLLOW

Posted: 13 Feb 2014 07:00 AM PST

We first learned of Vietnamese filmmaker Ham Tran in these parts when he served as the editor on martial arts fave The Rebel and he's certainly been busy - and diverse - since. Back in October the Tran directed romantic comedy How To Fight In Six Inch Heels hit local screens and he'll be back on Vietnamese screens in June with new horror film Hollow (Đoạt Hồn).A 6 year old girl falls into a river and drowns. One week later, her uncle, a police captain, travels to a remote village to claim her corpse, only to find that the girl is very much alive. He brings her home, but does not tell her parents that she was found dead. Strange things begin to happen as...

Review: ABOUT LAST NIGHT, Halfway Transformed By Kevin Hart Into A Raucous Comedy

Posted: 13 Feb 2014 06:00 AM PST

Kevin Hart is a profane, raunchy, and very successful stand-up comedian who broke big with his indie film Laugh At My Pain in 2011. Combining footage from an arena show in Los Angeles with a visit to Hart's hometown of Philadelphia, as well as a sketch parody of Reservoir Dogs, the film made a modest yet impressive amount of money at the box office. Since then, his profile has risen dramatically. He co-starred in the sleeper hit romantic comedy Think Like a Man in 2012, and in the past year has appeared in This Is the End, Grudge Match, and his second concert documentary, Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain, which was a much bigger hit than his first, not to mention last month's Ride Along,...
