Review: COMMUNITY S5EP08 "App Development And Condiments" Gets Dystopic Posted: 06 Mar 2014 09:00 PM PST I've spent a good few minutes typing and retyping more informed, humorous and/or clever openings to this review, only to come back to this conclusion: Last night's Community was an episode that featured one of the show's always interesting experiments in homage, but it was one experiment that didn't fully land. That is if you can say experiments land or not. In large measure that's because "App Development And Condiments" started with something more personal and intimate, an emotional rift between Jeff and Shirley, which is now a classic go-to for the characters. Though the ending has some real meaning for the two, the actual story which gets them there goes on and off the rails so many times that it was merely close... |
Watch This Four Minute Clip From CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Posted: 06 Mar 2014 06:30 PM PST You are about to watch a four minute clip from Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Technically, it is about two minutes and fifty seconds of footage followed by a trailer but who is counting. Cap and Black Widow infiltrate an ocean liner taken over by Batroc in a special extended, four minute look at Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," in theaters April 4!Some thoughts having watched this. There is a vantage point of Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow character that is beyond compare. And totally on purpose. Lordy! Also, I kind of wish now that I did not know that GSP was Batroc; I have been trying to know as little as possible before I see this flick in the cinema. Still, if he... |
FRANK Trailer: Fans Of Papier-mâché Heads & Art Rock Rejoice Posted: 06 Mar 2014 05:30 PM PST Yep, it's that Sundance flick where Michael Fassbender wears a giant apier-mâché head. And by the looks of its first trailer Irish director Lenny Abrahamson's flick feels down right delightful if you ask me. Our own Jason Gorber reviewed the film and had this to say: All the ingredients are her for me to adore Frank. You've got a quirky premise surrounding a bunch of musical fun, a standout performance by one of the world's best actors, a mix of the somber and the slapstick all coming together with a bunch of memorable one-liners.Yet for all its pieces, I'm not sure Frank adds up to what it could have been. It comes close enough to being a masterpiece that it's a bit frustrating, its ending... |
At Last! SNOWPIERCER To Break The Ice On June 27th Posted: 06 Mar 2014 05:08 PM PST UPDATE: CJ Entertainment, the producer of Snowpiercer, has confirmed that the film will be released in June, though according to them a date hasn't been finalized. It's been a long and winding road but Bong Joon Ho's eagerly anticipated Snowpiercer has finally secured a North American release date courtesy of US distributor The Weinstein Company. The film will receive a limited release beginning June 27th (the same day as the new Transformers film) through TWC's Radius label, which would indicate that a day and date VOD release is also on the cards.Following a long standoff Bong was able to retain the final cut of his film (which has already been released in Asian markets and France in its intended form). The compromise was that the film's... |
First Trailer For SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR Should Please Fans Posted: 06 Mar 2014 04:30 PM PST It's been a very, very long time coming, but Sin City creator Frank Miller and Mr. Macho Movie Maverick himself, Robert Rodriguez have at last unleashed our first solid look at their next entry in what is apparently now a series... Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. And it looks very much like a Sin City movie. As I am sure you can tell by now, this kind of picture just ain't my bag. But no doubt the heavy styled imagery of sex, drugs and bullets should appease fans of the original flick as well as the comics. Grim talk and G-strings away! The film hits stateside on August 22. ... |
The Undead Arrive In Denmark! Watch The ZOMBIEHAGEN Teaser! Posted: 06 Mar 2014 04:10 PM PST Not even good social services can save you from the undead. That appears to be the unwritten message behind Jonas Ussing's Danish short film Zombiehagen. A 25 minute short film set in Denmark's capitol, Ussing has just released the first teaser for his film and it looks very strong indeed. Strong, and hungry for flesh. Take a look at the teaser below.... |
13 SINS: Red Band Trailer For The 13 BELOVED Remake Gets Monstrous Posted: 06 Mar 2014 03:50 PM PST Plenty of Twitch readers are, I am sure, aware of the Thai horror series that started with 13 Beloved. The film placed a young and desperate man in the hot seat of an underground, and very dangerous, reality game show. I've never seen the original myself, but from what I understand it had a sense of humor about itself. From the looks of things in this trailer, it appears that Daniel Stamm's English-language remake does not. But I do actually appreciate its seriousness. It looks less like a Saw or Hostel, per se, and more in the vein of a Stephen King or Richard Matheson story. Ron Perlman does his thing, and I certainly think Mark Webber has more down-to-earth charm than many other everyman... |
First Teaser Trailer For LITTLE FOREST Starring Hashimoto Ai Posted: 06 Mar 2014 03:30 PM PST With films like Another or The Kirishima Thing Hashimoto Ai proved that she's one of the most promising Japanese actresses of the young generation. Since her big screen debut in Confessions in 2010 she's been delivering high quality performances, yet she's still waiting for that breakthrough moment. Now she gets her big chance.Based on a popular manga of the same name, Little Forest revolves around Ichiko (Hashimoto Ai), a city girl who decides to return to her peaceful and quiet hometown in order to reassess her priorities and life decisions. Yubari 2014: Explore Japan's Winter Wonderland Of Classic Movie Paintings Posted: 06 Mar 2014 03:00 PM PST Situated on Japan's snow-covered northern island of Hokkaido, the tiny city of Yubari, a ghost town since the collapse of the coal mining industry some decades ago, is host every year to one of the most unique little film festivals of the world - Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival. As mayhem descends on the tiny resort, with busloads of filmmakers, actors, press and students arriving from Tokyo and beyond it's easy to get sucked into the frantic film schedule and heavy drinking and forget to look into the cold whiteness around. Take a walk and keep your eyes open and you'll find there's more than just the snow covered scenery to reward you. Scattered along the sides of roads and the walls of shops and buildings... |

Posted: 06 Mar 2014 02:30 PM PST Hwang In-ho's serial killer action film Monster hits US screens March 14th, opening at the CGV Cinema in LA, and it looks like it could be all sorts of fun.Bok-Soon (KIM Go-Eun) runs a street stall while taking care of her younger sister. Bok-Soon's relatively peaceful life with her sister is disrupted when they cross paths with a serial killer named Tae-Soo (LEE Min-Ki). Meanwhile,... |
Review: JOURNEY TO THE WEST Dazzles, Frightens, And Still Tickles The Funny Bone Posted: 06 Mar 2014 02:00 PM PST Frequently adapted for the big screen, the latest version of Journey to the West quickly became one of the highest grossing films in China's box office history. That's not surprising, really, given the recent penchant for black comedy in cinema, combined with a classic tale, and the legendary Stephen Chow at the helm. How could it fail? The film is a prequel of sorts and follows do-gooder demon hunter Tang Sanzang (Wen Zhang) as he tries and fails to lull the evil out of the demons via a Buddha nursery rhyme book. Enter Bai Gu Jing (Shu Qi, in one of her best roles), a rough-and-ready but tired demon hunter who helps him out more times than one. Happenstance leads to her falling for him,... |
SXSW: Take A First Look At Fabulous Poster Art For THE MULE Posted: 06 Mar 2014 01:30 PM PST Though the year is still young, here's one thing we already know about 2014: It's the year we throw out everything we thought we know about Leigh Whannell. It's perfectly understandable that people thought they had the Australian talent figured out ... I mean, as the writer of both Saw and Insidious he's clearly a horror guy through and through, right? Well, yeah. Sort of. But it is becoming increasingly clear that writing horror is only one small bit of what Whannell is about and he's pushing ever more aggressively into other pastures. Take Sundance selection Cooties, for example, which Whannell co-wrote and co-stars in. And, yes, there's a horror element there but it's Whannell's comic performance on screen that'll stick with you the longest.And... |
Review: IN FEAR Takes A White-Knuckle Ride On A Dark Night Posted: 06 Mar 2014 01:00 PM PST New couple Tom and Lucy are on their way to a music festival, to meet up with friends, camp, and explore their new relationship, when things go terribly awry. In Fear opens with Lucy in the loo of a pub, while unseen to her, a leering eye stares through a peephole. As she and Tom leave to get on the road, Tom explains there was a slight altercation with a local due to a spilled drink, which he smoothed over with a couple of pints and an apology. Ever the romantic, and springing a surprise evening on his new girlfriend, Tom informs Lucy he has booked a room for the night at a lovely out of the way hotel, and that they'll drive to the... |

Review: GRAND PIANO Executes Its Goofy Premise With Precision And Skill Posted: 06 Mar 2014 12:00 PM PST Make no mistake, the premise of Grand Piano is 100 percent ridiculous. Do you remember Phone Booth, where Colin Farrell couldn't hang up or he'd be killed by a sniper? It's like that, only it's concert pianist Elijah Wood who has to keep playing or risk being shot. "Now you know the true meaning of stage fright!" is something that the villain really says to him. There's also an element of the plot that's not entirely dissimilar to the Bugs Bunny gag where Yosemite Sam has rigged a certain key on the piano to explode when Bugs plays it. So yes, it's complete nonsense. The bad guy's plan, the mechanics of the plot, the pianist's ability to multitask while performing -- ludicrous, all of it.... |

Jiang Wen Lets Fly A Teaser & Gorgeous Posters For GONE WITH THE BULLETS Posted: 06 Mar 2014 10:45 AM PST Gone With The Bullets, Jiang Wen's spiritual sequel to his monster hit Let The Bullets Fly, will arrive in cinemas across mainland China in 3D on 18 December, according to a newly released teaser trailer. Back in 2010, Let The Bullets Fly broke box office records in China, proving that director-star Jiang Wen had widespread mainstream appeal, in addition to critical acclaim. While this follow-up is not a precise sequel, it is being made very much in the same spirit of the earlier film, reuniting Jiang with co-star Ge You, who will be joined by Shu Qi, Wang Zhiwen, Wen Zhang and Zhou Yun in the 1920s-set comedy actioner, reported to revolve around a beauty pageant. With filming recently completed, a first teaser trailer has been unveiled,... |
Review: 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE Is A Servicable Sequel Posted: 06 Mar 2014 10:30 AM PST It seems apt for a film of this nature to provide a bit of historical context. Back in 2006 a young man who had previously helmed the surprisingly not shitty redux of Dawn of the Dead was tasked with bringing famed graphic novelists Lyn Varley and Frank Miller's 1998 tale of the Battle of Thermopylae. Coming on the heels of 2005's Sin City, 300 was another explicit attempt to make the stark lines and overt contrast of the graphic novel come to live on cinema screens. Through extensive CGI, hyper slow motion that would result in heroic "poses", the original 300 played like the drawing on a Grecian urn had come to life, with all participants clearly having done their crunches before their images were... |
Interview: WAR OF THE WORLDS: GOLIATH Director Joe Pearson Posted: 06 Mar 2014 10:00 AM PST On Friday, March 7, Joe Pearson's animated steampunk sci-fi animated film War of the Worlds: Goliath will be available on iTunes, Dish TV, Direct TV and cable VOD. It will also screen in select theaters in LA and NYC. I was able to forward five questions to the writer/director this week leading up to his film's run.Twitch: Can you bring our readers up to speed on the history of this project? It certainly seems like it was a long time coming. We first reported about the project in the Summer of 2009. Take us through the history of this project. Joe Pearson: First off, thanks for the continuing interest in War of the Worlds: Goliath and the unique and informed questions. You guys clearly know your... |
Tribeca Announces Lineups For Spotlight, Midnight And More! Posted: 06 Mar 2014 09:00 AM PST It was just the other day that we got our first proper look at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival with their Competition and Viewpoints lineups. Today we get to even more fun stuff with the lineups for their Spotlight, Midnight, Storyscapes, and Special Screening programs. Some titles that have piqued the Twitch-o-Meter include the Joss Whedon-penned, Brinn Hill-directed, and Zoe Kazan-starring metaphysical romance In Your Eyes, as well as Irish ghost story The Canal, plus the hilariously titled Zombeavers and Super Duper Alice Cooper (obviously a doc on Alice Cooper). Then we have the North American premiere of Tsai Ming Liang's monk-style performance piece Journey To The West, and Der Samurai, which is, yes, about some kind of East German samurai. Of course, this is... |
Review: THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, An Ode To Joy Posted: 06 Mar 2014 08:00 AM PST Regrettably, Beethoven got there first. In another world, The Grand Budapest Hotel, a celebration of wit and style and class, an example of a technical master working at the top of his craft, a work as warm and genuinely funny as its director or any of its stars have made, in another world it could just easily have been titled "Ode to Joy". I don't know if this is the film Wes Anderson has been building towards, or if it's simply an example of the planets aligning in just the right way, but there is something The Grand Budapest Hotel that feels valedictory. Maybe valedictory isn't the right word. Though I doubt Anderson is kissing his particular style goodbye (safe to bet he's not going... |

Review: HONEY, A Beautifully Nuanced Directorial Debut From Actress Valeria Golino Posted: 06 Mar 2014 07:00 AM PST Irene (Jasmine Trinca) lives alone by the ocean and has a peculiar job -- assisting deaths in terminally ill patients and their families by observing and providing poison used in putting down sick pets. Assisted suicide is a taboo subject in deeply religious Italy. The drug is illegal, so she has to travel down to Mexico once every month to get it. Having lost her mother to illness when she was young, Irene is somewhat of an idealist, believing that she's doing a good deed. With her cold facade, she hides her emotions remarkably well when carrying out her job -- using her work name Miele (Honey), she usually stays with the dying person, reminding them constantly that it's not too late to change their... |
Nick Damici And Jim Mickle Developing Lansdale's HAP AND LEONARD Novels For Small Screen Posted: 06 Mar 2014 06:30 AM PST Break out the Dr. Pepper and vanilla cookies! Nick Damici and Jim Mickle, the duo behind the big screen adaptation of Joe R. Lansdale's novel Cold in July, are working to bring the author's Hap and Leonard series to the small screen. They will work with Lansdale and develop a television series for the Sundance Channel. Hap Collins and Leonard Pine are two friends from the fictional town of LaBorde in East Texas. Hap spent time in prison for refusing to be drafted and fight in the Vietnam War. Leonard, his best friend, is a gay black man who went to Vietnam. Inseparable since then, they make ends meet by working in the rose fields and such. Though Hap tries to keep a level head and... |
Interview: Actress Valeria Golino On Her Directorial Debut, HONEY (MIELE) Posted: 06 Mar 2014 06:00 AM PST Italian actress Valeria Golino (Rain Man, Hot Shots!, Indian Runner, Respiro among others) makes an assured directorial debut with Honey/Miele, a drama about a woman who assists suicides for a living. It's a beautiful film that plays out like a great piece of music, accompanied by strong performances. It was quite nerve-wracking for me to meet Golino because I had a crush on her since I was young. Still stunning with her penetrating green eyes, kinky curls and smokey voice, she made my job of concentrating on my notes very difficult. But soon her unguarded candidness and enthusiasm got the better of me and we had a great conversation (I hope).Twitch: You are an established actor, working with a lot of different directors throughout your... |
