Hammer Girl Joins Timo Tjahjanto's THE NIGHT COMES FOR US

Posted: 06 Mar 2014 01:30 AM PST

We caught wind today of a new addition to the cast of Timo Tjahjanto's next film The Night Comes For Us. Word was that Julie Estelle, soon to be known around the world as Hammer Girl when Gareth Huw Evans' The Raid 2 drops like a bomb at the end of the month, was coming on board! Hell, she was even hinting at it during interviews at Sundance earlier this year. And since there has not been an official announcement yet I contacted Timo to confirm directly that she has joined the cast. This is what he had to say about her coming on board...She is about to enter a heavy duty training phase right now as we will be demanding a LOT of her physically...

Yubari 2014: Watch NSFW Award-Winning Short KETSUJIRU JUKE Now!

Posted: 05 Mar 2014 11:08 PM PST

Almost everything that screens at Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival is weird and wonderful to some degree or other, but even within this permissive anything goes environment there are some films that still manage to boggle the mind and exceed all expectation.Take Kabuki Sawako's 3-minute animated short, Ketsujiru Juke (Anal Juke - Anal Juice), for example. Awarded for its "Artistic Contribution", the film is a kaleidoscope of bizarre, sexually explicit imagery that echoes the work of Bill Plympton, while there are also references made to the 11 March 2011 earthquake, which has had a profound and lasting effect on the country.Kabuki, a 23-year-old Graphic Design major who previously worked for a porn film company, was inspired by dreams fuelled by her recent break up, and...

LA's Indian Film Fest Announces Child Trafficking Drama SOLD As Opener

Posted: 05 Mar 2014 04:10 PM PST

A film fest quickly gaining attention in fest-packed Los Angeles is the Indian Film Fest of LA. With last year's high profile screenings of Gangs of Wasseypur, Midnight Children, and Eega, IFFLA positioned itself as the best way to catch the latest high profile films from the subcontinent. This year's fest is scheduled for April 8-13 and the organizers have just announced the opening night film as Emma Thompson-produced child trafficking drama Sold. The film is directed by Jeffrey D. Brown and stars Gillian Anderson, David Arquette, and Seema Biswas. Perhaps not the Indian hit that Wasseypur was, but an interesting choice none the less. Here is more on the film: Through one extraordinary girl's journey, Sold illustrates the brutality of child trafficking, a crime...

Review: Emotional Drama LOVING Searches For Truth About The Mechanics Of Love

Posted: 05 Mar 2014 01:30 PM PST

In an impassioned and perceptive manner, Loving (Milosc) breaks down the essence of a marriage on the verge of collapse. The sharply-written script goes beyond the surface in order to expose all the ingredients crucial for the formation and further development of a full-bodied relationship. Basing its premise on the foundation that even the slightest alteration in the trajectory of a seemingly blissful marriage might have catastrophic consequences, the film gives way to a slow-burn examination of the characters' inability to cope with a sudden tragedy that strikes violently like a bolt from the blue.In a small town somewhere in Poland, a couple is expecting their first child. Maria (Julia Kijowska) and Tomek (Marcin Dorocinski) are at that point in their married life where even such common...

BLUE RUIN: Jeremy Saulnier's Brilliant Revenge Thriller Gets Equally Brilliant New UK Trailer

Posted: 05 Mar 2014 12:30 PM PST

Full marks to the marketing team at the UK's Picturehouse Entertainment. They've got one hell of a film on their hands with Jeremy Saulnier's Blue Ruin, they clearly know it, and they've just gone and released what may very well be an absolutely perfect trailer for the film. Haunting and evocative, troubling and mysterious, this tells you just the care bones of the concept while draping you in the tone of the film itself and now it's got me all worked up and wanting to watch the full picture again.A mysterious outsider's quiet life is turned upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Proving himself an amateur assassin, he winds up in a brutal fight to...

THE BOXTROLLS Roll Out A Delightful New Trailer

Posted: 05 Mar 2014 12:00 PM PST

If you've seen and loved ParaNorman and Coraline, then you know why The Boxtrolls has me so jazzed. All three are from LAIKA, the Oregon-based animation studio that prides itself on "handmade" films, and has produced very stylish, very distinctive, very character-oriented work. Here's the official synopsis for The Boxtrolls: A family event movie from the creators of Coraline and ParaNorman that introduces audiences to a new breed of family - TheBoxtrolls, a community of quirky, mischievous creatures who have lovingly raised an orphaned human boy named Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead-Wright) in the amazing cavernous home they've built beneath the streets of Cheesebridge. When the town's villain, Archibald Snatcher (Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley), comes up with a plot to get rid of the...

It's been a long and winding road for Mamat Khalid's Malaysian action fantasy Apokalips X. Writer-director David Campbell should be making a splash on the festival circuit soon with his debut feature, Lemon Tree Passage. When a group of young backpackers learn of a ghost said to appear in the rear-view mirror of a speeding car they set out to recreate it with the help of some locals. Exclusive JUST A SIGH Clip: A Romantic Meet-Cute, Foiled

Posted: 05 Mar 2014 08:00 AM PST

Gabriel Byrne speaks French! In Just A Sigh (original title: Le Temps de Laventure), Byrne plays a "mysterious Irishman" whose chance encounter with an actress (Emmanuelle Devos) changes both their lives. In an exclusive clip, both are traveling on a train to Paris. (Presumably they have been exchanging coy glances; this is a romantic drama, after all.) Byrne approaches Devos to ask for directions. It sounds like the perfect, quite civilized meet-cute -- "how I met your mother" -- until it's not. Just A Sigh, written and directed by Jérôme Bonnell (The Queen of Clubs) opens just in time for spring, first in New York on March 21 and then in Los Angeles on March 28 before expanding nationwide. Watch The Explosive Theatrical Trailer For Indonesian Actioner GUARDIAN

Posted: 05 Mar 2014 07:30 AM PST

There's a whole lot of banging and crashing (and punching and stabbing and exploding) in the theatrical trailer for Helfi Kardit's upcoming Indonesian action film Guardian. Boasting an international cast that includes Final Destination 2's Sarah Carter alongside local stars including Tio Pakusadewo - about to be familiar to action fans around the world thanks to his bad guy part in Gareth Huw Evans' The Raid 2 - Guardian stands as yet another example of the Indonesian industry continuing to step up their game in the action arena. No, the CGI is not all up to Hollywood standard, but the production values are very strong and the scope and ambition is undeniable. Keep an eye on Kardit and his Skylar Pictures ... I expect this...

Destroy All Monsters: Pageantry's Responsibility To Morality At The Oscars

Posted: 05 Mar 2014 07:00 AM PST

There are no two forces more fundamentally incompatible than lightweight moral outrage and Hollywood. In a way, we're already very well aware of this, eager to jump on Jared Leto for daring to besmirch his lion-tressed, doe-eyed acceptance speech with the words "Venezuela" and "Ukraine." Shut the fuck up, Catalano! Get off the stage! And yet the media at large generated a couple hundred think pieces over the weekend about what Cate Blanchett's acceptance speech did or didn't owe, in terms of her relationship to Woody Allen; or what 12 Years a Slave winning Best Picture means about racism in modern America. It's patently ludicrous to try to chain a discussion of right and wrong in relation to modern media -- or even a bit...
