SXSW 2014 Review: HONEYMOON Is All Parts Scare Posted: 08 Mar 2014 01:00 AM PST From Honeymoon's opening montage of our newlywed couple reminiscing about falling in love, you might think you are settling in for romantic drama about the challenges of starting a life together. You'd be wrong. While plenty of challenges await our young lovers at their lakeside getaway, they're not of a typical marriage quarrel nature. No, something is very wrong at this idyllic cabin in the woods. Is there something supernatural afoot, or is there a more logical explanation? While it wouldn't be right to reveal that information, it would be very wrong not to point out how impressive this debut feature from Leigh Janiak is. Honeymoon is a taut thriller that very quickly gets up to full speed - and once there, plunges the... |
A Turkish Eye For Horror: An Interview With AMMAR Director Ozgur Bakar Posted: 07 Mar 2014 09:30 AM PST The recent debut of the trailer for Ozgur Bakar's Ammar got quite a few people excited. Looking like a combination of The Evil Dead and old-school atmosphere reliant horror film, Ammar represents one of the ever-growing new wave of horror alongside others like Can Evrenol and Orcun Benli. We recently took the time to talk to Ozgur about Ammar, the state of Turkish horror cinema and what the future holds for him.Hi Ozgur. Let's start with the obvious - can you briefly introduce yourself?Coming from a scriptwriting background, just like many other directors, I decided in 2005 to film my first short in order to reflect the ideas within my head. The overall response was largely positive and the film went to win a number of... |
Review: THE WRATH OF VAJRA Is Pure Martial Arts Madness Posted: 07 Mar 2014 09:00 AM PST Martial arts films are a dime a dozen in Southeast Asia, however, finding a really good one is pretty difficult these days. Either the film's action is overly dependent on goofy wire work, or the filmmakers let ridiculous things like plot get in the way of a good ass-whuppping. Thankfully, director Law Wing-cheong has learned from the mistakes of the past and puts his best foot forward in what is one of the most fun martial arts films I've seen in years with The Wrath of Vajra.Any real attempt to describe the plot is beside the point, the film's action is where the real meat is. There are some bad guys, a secret clan of trained assassins controlled by Japanese occupation forces in the 1930's,... |
Hey, Toronto! Win A Pair Of Tickets To See Brian De Palma's CARRIE On The Big Screen! Posted: 07 Mar 2014 08:30 AM PST Hey, Toronto! The Twitch presented Stephen King retrospective Kingdom Of Fear continues at the TIFF Bell Lightbox tomorrow night with a screening of Brian De Palma's Carrie and we want you to be there! The very definition of the teenage outcast, sixteen-year-old Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) is mousy, withdrawn, friendless, tormented at home by her fanatically religious mother (Piper Laurie) and at school by her mercilessly nasty peers -- not to mention the fact that she has powerful telekinetic abilities that wreak havoc when she loses control of her emotions. Things suddenly start looking up for the hapless Carrie when the most popular boy in school asks her to the prom -- but when the school bitch and her delinquent boyfriend (Nancy Allen and John Travolta)... |
The Many Faces of Tilda Swinton Posted: 07 Mar 2014 08:00 AM PST One has to only watch the last couple of Jim Jarmusch films to know that the director is in love with Tilda Swinton. Increasingly, the filmmaker's camera loves the way she moves, the way she wears clothing, and captures her unspoken, cooler-than-thou attitude. A moments in his most recent film, Only Lovers Left Alive, this reaches almost self-parody as the film lingers on observing Swinton's jet-setting vampire gather and pack her overnights for air travel. Katherine Mathilda Swinton was born in Britain, and blessed with angular androgynous form that brings a detached, outer space vibe to her screen presence. The first time I encountered the actress was in this surreal Orbital music video where she is essentially an otherworldly visitor wandering in time lapse. In a... |
Hey, Toronto! Win A Pair Of Tickets To See Paul Verhoeven's ROBOCOP On The Big Screen! Posted: 07 Mar 2014 07:30 AM PST Hey, Toronto! Has the recent remake of Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop left you with a hankering to witness some vintage robotic law enforcement on the big screen? Well, you're in luck! The Verhoeven original screens tonight at 9:30 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox as part of their ongoing Paul Verhoeven retrospective and we've got a pair of tickets to give away!In a destitute, crime-ridden near-future Detroit on the verge of being bought up wholesale by rapacious mega-corporation OCP, dedicated cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) is brutally murdered in the line of duty by bespectacled psycho Boddiker (Kurtwood Smith) and his gang of thugs. What's left of Murphy is promptly appropriated by OCP scientists and used as the basis for their newest product: RoboCop, a cyborg law... |
Amazing First Stills From THE ABSENCE OF EDDY TABLE Posted: 07 Mar 2014 07:00 AM PST It was back in January of 2013 that we first brought word of The Absence Of Eddy Table, an animated short film based on the work of cult favorite comic artist Dave Cooper (Suckle, Weasel, Ripple) and directed by Trollhunter CGI artist Rune Spaans with Norwegian Ninja producer Eric Vogel and his company Tordenfilm producing. Well, animation takes a long time but the film is now deep into production and we've got the first trio of images to share and they are stunning. Very weird, very distinctive, and carrying such a natural sense of weight and detail to them that it's very hard to believe that this is a CGI production and not stop motion. I absolutely cannot wait to see these in motion. The... |
Film4 FrightFest Really, Really Wants You to Turn Your Bloody Phone Off! Posted: 07 Mar 2014 06:00 AM PST So much so, that they've made a competition! While last year, a select group of filmmakers were invited to make short idents "encouraging" patrons to turn off their phones (and it was an amazing set of idents), this year they're opening it up to competition among budding filmmakers. This is a great opportunity to be creative, have fun, and get your short film seen by the masses! Details in the press release below, and you can watch one of last year's great idents (my favourite) below to get a feel for it. Following on from the success of last year's 'Turn Off Your Bloody Phone' idents, Film4 FrightFest (in association with Ne'er Do Well Films) is launching a competition to find the most inventive, crazy and funny ways... |
This Exclusive LUCKY BASTARD Clip Suggests You Whack Off Posted: 07 Mar 2014 05:30 AM PST Oh, poor Dave, he just can't seem to catch a break. Your typical mild-mannered lover of pornography, Dave is now the winner of an online contest where he gets to sleep with a pornstar (while the cameras roll of course). But even here amongst some buxom ladies, he is, in a way, still getting the short end of the stick *ahem*. Or, at least that's where things stand in our exclusive clip for the psychological thriller Lucky Bastard. The film is currently playing in New York and LA, and though it may seem like your typical found-footage film gone wrong, it's written and directed by TV vet Robert Nathan, who had his hands on both Law & Order and ER. The film stars Jay... |
