Review: FASTEN YOUR SEATBELT... And Enjoy The Flight Posted: 25 Mar 2014 06:00 PM PDT Ha Jung-woo of The Chaser and The Yellow Sea fame begins his screenwriting and directing career with Fasten Your Seatbelt, a congenial and expertly paced airborne comedy that blends lighthearted social satire with simple yet crazy-addictive humor within quite possibly one of the most claustrophobic settings ever devised. Even though Ha sometimes falls victim to his own lighthearted approach to the given material, he coaxes first-rate performances from most of his buoyant ensemble cast. The story unfurls over the course of roughly 90 minutes and, despite some of its shortcomings in the second act, gives a fresh and interesting look at the world's fascination with celebrity culture. The plot is supposedly influenced by Ryu Seung-boom's (The Unjust, The Berlin File) real-life turbulence-related experiences. On board a... |
Tribeca 2014: Watch The Pulse Pounding Trailer For Midnighter THE CANAL Posted: 25 Mar 2014 02:30 PM PDT As we ramp up for the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival in NYC this April 16 - 27, more and more material on the films that will be playing the fest come pouring in. Today we've discovered that the festival page has a mighty fine trailer for one of it's midnight selections.Ivan Kavanagh's The Canal is a ghost story, and from the looks of it probably one that comes in the best sense of those words. One of our top priorities to see during the fest, Tribeca describes the film as such:Sitting in an empty theater, a film archivist watches the grainy footage that will be his undoing. David and his wife are perfectly happy--or so he believes. When he finds out the home he shares... |
Here Comes Another HERCULES: Dwayne Johnson Gives It A Go In First Trailer Posted: 25 Mar 2014 01:00 PM PDT Just two months ago, Kellan Lutz made for a wan half-god, half-man in The Legend of Hercules, directed by Renny Harlin. Now comes the first trailer for the other 2014 Hercules, this one played by Dwayne Johnson and directed by Brett Ratner. With a bigger budget, better visual effects, and a more muscular lead ... it's still a draw at this point. Having seen Harlin's version, it's surprising to see this trailer play off it -- declaring 'before he was a legend ... he was a man' -- especially since the upcoming film will revolve around an older Hercules, or, at least, older than the one played by Lutz. Johnson is certainly an amiable enough star presence at this point of his career to play Hercules; it... |
Crowdfund This! Dark Australian Thriller CRUSHED Posted: 25 Mar 2014 12:00 PM PDT With her dark thriller Crushed having wrapped up principal photography, Australian writer-director Megan Riakos is looking for a little bit of helping getting it over the finish line. When a winery owner dies, his estranged alcoholic daughter returns home. But when his death is ruled a murder and her mother becomes the prime suspect, she must uncover the truth. Featuring a cast of established players and young up and comers, Crushed is looking like a promising bit of work. That's an exclusive still from the film up above and you can learn more with the pitch video below. And should you feel the urge to throw a few bucks into the till you can do that here.... |
New EDGE OF TOMORROW Trailer Is Cruise-Centric Posted: 25 Mar 2014 11:30 AM PDT It makes perfect sense that the new trailer for Doug Liman's Edge of Tomorrow revolves entirely around Tom Cruise. The first trailer established the premise: aliens invade Earth, soldiers die quickly, one is caught in a time loop until he becomes a better soldier. The second trailer features Tommy Terrific, explaining things to Emily Blunt, and then performing heroic deeds, such as riding a motorcycle and jumping around in a mechanized suit. You'd never know that Blunt's character is actually the superior soldier, a thought that's briefly acknowledged when she declares that she will train Tom. With the movie due for release on June 6, however, what needs to be sold is that Tom Cruise is the hero in a big-budget sci-action action war movie: fewer gleaming... |
Review: Don't Go to HAPPY CAMP Posted: 25 Mar 2014 11:00 AM PDT First time writer-director Josh Anthony's Happy Camp indulges in all the worst elements of the found footage genre to such an extent that for the first half of the mercifully brief film, I thought it was heading toward some clever subversion of 20-somethings searching for something in the wilderness only to come to a sticky end as the audience is underwhelmed. You wouldn't think that Klamath National Forest, where Happy Camp is set, is even in northern California. The sun never seems to break through the autumnal tree cover and its residents - each and every one a little hostile and terrified as hell - would rather visitors not come in, poking around and asking questions about the 600-odd souls who have disappeared in the... |
WARSAW STORIES Trailer: An Omnibus Film Dedicated To Poland's Sprawling Capital Posted: 25 Mar 2014 09:00 AM PDT Most important cities in the world have their own anthology films. Whether related or not, various stories presented in such specific features tend to reveal a lot about a given place and its citizens, often attempting to evoke a realistic atmosphere and emotions inspired by the location. The long list includes New York Stories, Tokyo!, To Rome with Love, and Paris, je t'aime, just to name a few.Now Warsaw, Poland's sprawling capital, finally gets its chance to join the group, thanks to Warsaw Stories (Stacja Warszawa), an omnibus film directed by five ambitious graduates of Andrzej Wajda's Master School of Directing: Maciej Cuske, Kacper Lisowski, Nenad Mikovic, Mateusz Rakowicz, and Tymon Wyciszkiewicz. By touching upon themes such as loneliness, degradation of moral values, big-city struggles, murder,... |
Hooray For Hollywood! No, Hollywood Did Not "Steal" Your Script Posted: 25 Mar 2014 08:00 AM PDT I just returned home from a film festival where I was asked one of the most amazing questions, I think, ever. After sitting on a panel discussing the growing nexus between short-films and Hollywood, this young man -- early to mid 20s -- approached me and wanted to know if he could ask me a question. "Sure!" I replied, never for a second imagining what I would hear next: "So, I have this great script but I don't want anyone to steal it -- how do I sell it without showing it to anyone?" If you're anything like me, the "needle" of your brain-record just scratched across the surface to a dead-stop. "I'm sorry - what?" (Had I misheard him?) He repeated his question, just... |
