SXSW 2014 Review: SPACE STATION 76 Is A Retro Future Worthy Of Its Buzz

Posted: 14 Mar 2014 06:00 PM PDT

When I first heard the very far-out premise of Space Station 76, which the film's press release describes as "a comedic drama about a group of people (and several robots) living on a space station in a 1970's-version of the future," I was immediately filled with eager anticipation for what seemed a shoo-in to be one of SXSW's standout films. How could a movie that exists within a dated imagining of the future possibly go wrong? Then, early in the week, standing in line for the midnight movie, Starry Eyes, shit-shooting with a fellow cult fan, the wind was promptly removed from my sails hearing his luke-warm review to the effect of "Space Station 76 is an underwhelming, overly-long SNL sketch. I was sad...

The Full Lineup For Dallas IFF 2014 Is Pretty Incredible

Posted: 14 Mar 2014 04:30 PM PDT

I've been attending the Dallas International Film Festival since the first installment, when it was still AFI Dallas. I can honestly say that 2014's full lineup is probably the strongest, most Twitch-friendly line up that the Dallas IFF has had since those first three years. I've been happy with the films in past years, but mostly as a result of catching things I wasn't expecting to enjoy. This year, my anticipation is off the charts.Twitch readers should be familiar with films like Alex de la Iglesia's Witching & Bitching, Matsumoto HItoshi's R100, Ti West's The Sacrament, Ari Folman's The Congress, and Richie Mehta's Siddharth (Todd's top film of 2013), however, there's a lot more in there to get you guys excited. There are also tons...

SXSW 2014 Interview: OPEN WINDOWS' Director Nacho Vigalondo and Stars Sasha Grey & Elijah Wood Talk Privacy Invasion

Posted: 14 Mar 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Nacho Vigalondo, the man who brought us the mind-fucktastic Timecrimes (07), is back with the mystery thriller Open Windows, a film that twists, turns, and shocks, setting countless narrative precedents along the way (here is Peter's review). One flagrant innovation is Vigalondo's achievement in telling a story that exists entirely within the space of laptop computer screens and mobile devices. With a stellar cast including the tone perfect Elijah Wood and sometimes actor, Sasha Grey, in a performance that begs for further roles in the fiction film industry, Open Windows is a rare marvel that further proves director Nacho Vigalondo is one of today's most unique and far-out storytellers.Twitch: Can you talk a bit about the genesis of the project?Nacho Vigalondo: The idea came from outside....

Just beginning what will surely be a long and successful festival run, Andrew Desmond's Entity is one seriously ambitious - and from the looks of the trailer, seriously gorgeous - scifi short. Alias Hilsum plays an astronaut ejected into space when her craft fails and what she finds ... well, the trailer doesn't tell you what, but there's definitely something. Check it out below....

Interview: Daniel Rodriguez Risco Brings Back Classic Thrillers With EL VIENTRE

Posted: 14 Mar 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Peruvian filmmaker Daniel Rodríguez Risco  took an unconventional path to making movies. A former Economics student turned businessman, entrepreneur and University Dean, he worked on a second career as a budding filmmaker by making his own short fims - one per year from 1998 to 2005 - some of which won him some prestigious awards and a chance to travel to film festivals worldwide. The shorts also caught the eye of the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Suddenly, the former Dean was back in the classroom, as a 40 year-old Filmmaking student. The experience led to a radical change, with Rodríguez deciding to devote himself to writing and making movies full-time.This led to the release of The Watercolorist in 2008, a decidedly uncommercial, personal...

Review: BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRY Triggers Gag Reflex

Posted: 14 Mar 2014 12:30 PM PDT

For such an obviously small and grass-rootsy kinda dark comedy, Better Living Through Chemistry has a surprising lot going for it. Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde, Michelle Monaghan. That's a lot of solid talent rounding out the three leading parts, all of whom have turned heads recently with other work. Unfortunately, when pitted together in this film, chemistry is exactly what they lack. (That may be the obvious line, but there, I said it. And, it's no less obvious than much of this movie.) First time writing/directing team Geoff Moore and David Posamentier, working with a glaringly apparent low budget, somehow netted this eye-opening cast - an accomplishment which is nothing to sneeze at. They even managed to get Ray Liotta and Jane Fonda to turn up...

SXSW 2014 Review: BIG IN JAPAN Is A Raucous Adventure In Wacky & Wonderful Tokyo

Posted: 14 Mar 2014 12:00 PM PDT

"It's not the language barrier... it's a different problem," states one of the members of Tennis Pro, the band at the center of Big in Japan, as the bandmates try to wash their clothes in a Tokyo laundromat. This statement pretty much sums up the theme of the film; a fictionalized tale of the real life band that leaves their waning popularity in the States behind to try to make it big in... well... Japan. It's a fish out of water/coming of age story about a bunch of aging men who are forced to reassess everything in their lives and confront their choices before this last opportunity gets away from them. It's also a hell of a lot of fun. The story starts off...

Crowdfund This! A GIFT FOR AMELIA Combines Beauty And Horror!

Posted: 14 Mar 2014 11:30 AM PDT

There is some freaky stuff going on in Vancouver, B.C. these days. Other than the complete implosion of my beloved Canucks it is turning into one of the hotspots for women making a name for themselves in Canadian horror cinema and the international festival circuit. The most notable exports from the Emerald City have to be the Soska Sisters and their horror outputs Dead Hooker In A Trunk and American Mary. But now, horror photographer Danielle K L Anathema, is making the transition from photography to film with her upcoming short A Gift For Amelia.  A young woman finds her inner beauty while in the throws of a mysterious doctors surgical embrace. Inspired by films such as Aftermath, Perfume, and certain elements of Repo-Men, we're imagining...

Review: Do We Need NEED FOR SPEED?

Posted: 14 Mar 2014 10:00 AM PDT

I like Aaron Paul. I've met the guy a couple times over the last few months, and he seems like a mensch. He was at Sundance for Hellion, and came across as a genuine, down-to-Earth guy who was more interested in talking about his fellow cast members than himself. While he's famous for playing a schmuck on a TV series about cooking meth, he has managed, it seems, to not have let fame get to his head. I saw him again about a week later when he was in Toronto for the Need For Speed premiere, and he was again completely at ease with the pretty intense mob that greeted him. The audience was filled with 20 to 50 year old women, many of...

Something strange is afoot. They're raising funds for post on Kickstarter now and while the teaser trailer definitely shows the budget limits it also shows a whole lot of creativity. Here's hoping they get what they need ......

The Many Faces Of Michael Fassbender

Posted: 14 Mar 2014 09:00 AM PDT

This week, 12 Years a Slave has been released on the home-viewing platforms, hot on the heels of it winning the Best Picture Oscar. So in this week's installment of "Many Faces", I'd like to focus on the actor playing its villain: Michael Fassbender. Believe it or not, there was a time when I couldn't stand the sight of Michael Fassbender. In one of his films, I had noticed a slight nasal twang in his voice, and combined with his general assured presence I got him labelled as insufferably arrogant. Not the man personally of course (never met him), but I just got an "Ugh, him again" feeling I whenever I spotted him in a film. A few years later though, he was just too...

Our Facebook Quiz Is About To Turn 250!

Posted: 14 Mar 2014 08:30 AM PDT

Way back when Twitch had its own separate forum, the most-watched topic used to be the screenshot quiz. The rules were simple: someone would post a screenshot, and the person who guessed the movie won the right to post the NEXT screenshot. And this went on for seven years, until well over a thousand films had been guessed. Then times changed: the forum went dead as people moved discussions over to social media. But last year we relaunched a new forum on our Facebook page. And what was the first topic we put on it? The screenshot quiz of course!!! We decided to reboot it fresh, with slightly revised rules, and with a winners list added for bragging purposes. No prizes, this is just for...
