Věra Chytilová, The First Lady Of Czech Cinema, Has Passed Posted: 15 Mar 2014 02:30 PM PDT Czech New Wave director Věra Chytilová passed away earlier this week, on March 12, according to the Prague Post. She was 85 years old. Chytilová is best known to international cinephiles as the master mind behind Daisies, the rambunctious, undefinable and yet most succinctly crazy anti-statement statement I can imagine. While many of Chytilová's films are not well known outside of her home territory, she was a key player in the 1960s Czech cinema, otherwise known as the Czech New Wave, along with the likes of Miloš Forman and Jiří Menzel. The success of Daisies led to The Fruits Of Paradise which was met with hostility from the occupation just as the so-called Prague Spring was being promptly axed. It was another seven years before... |

The beginning of the teaser says that Ju-on was voted as the scariest horror film in a Japanese survey, beating Nakata Hideo's Ringu (which took second place). An elementary school teacher named Yui visits the home of a boy named Toshio Saeki who's been absent from school for a long period of time. When she arrives, she re-lives the horrific tragedy which occurred in the Saeki household 10 years earlier. A cardboard box left in a closet holds the key to revealing a long-hidden truth.Ju-on: Beginning Of The End stars Sasaki Nozomi... |
SXSW 2014 Review: DOC OF THE DEAD Is A Worthwhile History Of The Zombie Posted: 15 Mar 2014 01:00 PM PDT If you're anything like most genre film freaks, you probably looked at the title, rolled your eyes, and muttered "not another zombie flick" between clenched teeth. Don't worry: no one will hold it against a film buff who says that the world of popular culture has been absolutely stuffed to the brim and beyond with all things zombie. There are zombie comic books, zombie video games, zombie facebook apps, and of course, more zombie movies than you can shake a rotting, brains-eating stick at. It's no small wonder, then, that Doc of the Dead manages to stay fresh and entertaining for (most of) its entire running time. This nonfiction entry from director Alexandre Phillippe, who brought us 2010's The People Vs George Lucas, gets into... |

The posters were displayed at the convention center in a gallery for all to view. There was some steep competition with plenty of unique and eye-grabbing designs, graphically clever layouts, and enticing imagery that certainly influenced which movies I chose to see. This is a gallery of some of my favorites. I tried to pick a variety of styles to show the breadth of the range of movies and design sense.... |
