New Teaser For Oshii's PATLABOR: THE NEXT GENERATION

Posted: 04 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT

As the marketing campaign for Oshii Mamoru's live action update to his popular Patlabor series, now is the time where - if this were a conventional giant robot film - we'd be breaking out the big time giant robot action. That's what people want in a giant robot movie, right? Giant robots doing giant roboty things? Well ... Patlabor has always been a series that delights in putting conventional wisdom on its ear and so while, yes, we get giant robots in action in this latest teaser I'll just say it's not quite how you'd expect. This initial installment of The Next Generation serves as a pilot of sorts for the subsequent television series which will, in turn, be followed by a true theatrical film. Reports...

AFFLICTED Will Help Canada Defeat America!

Posted: 04 Apr 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Ha! This is a fun little bit of goofing around ...This weekend sees the obvious box office juggernaut that is Captain America: The Winter Soldier hit the big screen in a big way. Also hitting the screen is little Canadian indie horror Afflicted. Which you would think is no contest at all, but you know, 1812 and all that ... mess with Canada at your own peril. And some patriotic Canuck (I presume) has put together a fan trailer for the film playing up this fact and it's pretty damn funny. Check it out below....

Explore The Roots Of Indonesian Action With GARUDA POWER

Posted: 04 Apr 2014 10:00 AM PDT

While Gareth Huw Evans may have reintroduced the world to Indonesian action with Merantau and The Raid, those films are not an introduction of the action genre to the SE Asian nation but, rather, a reinvigoration of a tradition that spans back to the 1930s. And for those wanting to get deeper into that history upcoming documentary Garuda Power dives deep into the history of action cinema in Indonesia.THE RAID 1 & 2's success put worldwide spotlight on a largely unknown Asian Cinema country; few people know that there are currently 80 movies produced per year and that Gareth Evan's instant action classics are the latest of a range of hundreds of totally crazy action titles produced in Indonesia since the early 1930s. The docu-fiction...

The Many Faces Of Scarlett Johansson

Posted: 04 Apr 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Scarlett Johansson is currently red-hot, and I'm not talking about her physical appearance, no matter how many magazines vote her as "sexiest woman of the year". After all, she is the actress who got whole theaters swooning just by her stellar voice-acting in Spike Jonze's Her. No, she is hot in the business sense. Two films premiere in the US this week which have tongues wagging, and she is prominently visible in both. Science fiction drama Under the Skin very dependently rests on her shoulders, and in Captain America: The Winter Soldier she has the strongest supporting part. On top of that, the trailer for Luc Besson's upcoming thriller Lucy is making ripples all of its own this week, and it features Scarlett front and...

New EXPENDABLES 3 Trailer Promises One Last Ride

Posted: 04 Apr 2014 08:15 AM PDT

Is the end near for The Expendables? The new teaser for The Expendables 3 would have you believe so, promising that the upcoming third film in the series will be their 'last ride'. That said, we're all aware that there are last rides and then there are last ride last rides and the difference between the two is generally determined by box office results. Or, possibly in this case, Stallone running out of aging action stars to recruit out of his personal Rolodex. All of this to say: New teaser. It doesn't show very much beyond shots of all the key cast members but you do get a little more flavor, at least, than in the earlier materials. Check it out below....

Preview: Panorama Europe Spotlights New & Old Voices Alike

Posted: 04 Apr 2014 08:00 AM PDT

As spring finally arrives in the Big Apple so do a swatch of European films that have largely gone unnoticed even on the festival circuit. Leave it to the European Union National Institutes for Culture then to say "Hey, hold up! America, we've got some flicks for ya!" And while I'm sure no one at any of those institutes actually talks like a 1930s movie gangster, that level of enthusiasm for these under-seen movies is no doubt there. Co-presented with the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, the series that was once known as Disappearing Act returns as the simpler titled, but no less potent Panorama Europe. Starting with tonight's screening of Spain's Unit 7, the fest runs until April 13 at MoMI and...

SHREW'S NEST: Check Out The First Images From Iglesia Produced Horror

Posted: 04 Apr 2014 07:00 AM PDT

For what appears to be the first time in his long and acclaimed career Spanish genre icon Alex de la Iglesia is donning the producer's hat on a project he is not also directing with Juanfer Andrés and Esteban Roel's Shrew's Nest. Iglesia is joined in his producers role by Carolina Bang and Kiko Martinez with Blancanieves' Pedro Ruigómez on as line producer and make up effects by Pan's Labyrinth veteran Pepe Quetglas. Here's how the directors describe their creation:With our first feature, Shrews' Nest, we're looking to strike a balance between our two favorite types of movies. On the one hand, genre films -- and more specifically, horror, one of the genres that has taken up the most viewing hours of our lives. But...
