THE CANAL To Receive US/Canada Release Via The Orchard & Shock Till You Drop

Posted: 25 Apr 2014 01:05 PM PDT

Fresh off its Tribeca premiere (Read Joshua Chaplinsky's review), Ivan Kavanagh's far out horror The Canal has just inked a deal for US and Canadian distribution with upstart distributor The Orchard as part of their partnership with Ryan Turek's horror website/brand Shock Till You Drop. No release plans have yet been announced but a VOD and limited theatrical campaign would make sense based on how similar films have been marketed recently. Turek had this to say about the film and partnership: "This is one of those horror films that really creeps up on you. It's a truly unnerving piece of work," says ShockTillYouDrop.com managing editor Ryan Turek. "I'm excited to have it join the growing slate of horror films Shock Till You Drop is releasing...

Crowdfund This! Portuguese Documentary CENTRO DE DIA (RETIREMENT HOME)!

Posted: 25 Apr 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Portuguese director Fernando Lino needs your help to finish his documentary Centro De Dia, and not very much, frankly. Lino is in the final stages of post production on his documentary study of the residents of a small town retirement home - a production in which he spent six months shooting over 120 hours of footage of residents, filling virtually all roles other than composer himself - and he's looking to raise a thousand Euro to pay for sound mix on the film.In a retirement home in Sandim, a small town in the north of Portugal, a group of elders have their day to day lives. The group is composed by retired farmers, veterans of the Ultramar war (portuguese colonial war), teachers, construction workers, among...

The Many Faces Of Roy Scheider

Posted: 25 Apr 2014 09:00 AM PDT

This week, a Blu-ray has been released of director William Friedkin's Sorcerer, an English-language adaptation of Clouzot's The Wages of Fear. A difficult production once thought to be a big fat failure, Friedkin's version is now seen by many as a masterpiece. Time to dedicate a quiz to its star, Roy Scheider! It's almost silly to call it "The Many Faces," though, as Roy Scheider had exactly one face, albeit one he could put to great use. One of the best actors of the seventies and eighties, Scheider was both instantly recognizable AND able to blend into the background. He exuded a kind of standard believability, which made him fit in any production, whether he had to be a villain or the hero. And he...

First Trailer For ZOMBIE FIGHT CLUB Comes As Advertised

Posted: 25 Apr 2014 08:00 AM PDT

A memo to Andy On: It may be time to consider new management. On takes the lead in Taiwanese director Joe Chien's sophomore film, Zombie Fight Club, which features (as you might expect) a zombie fight club. Somewhat surprising given how overwhelmingly bad Chien's previous Zombie 108 was, however, is that not only did they land Andy On for this but also Philip Ng, another bright rising talent when it comes to Hong Kong screen fighters who can actually act. Bluntly, On and Ng are both far better than this has any hope of being and the fact that both continue to do this sort of stuff is just baffling.Anyway ... cops, slave traders, drug traffickers and an underground zombie fighting ring. It's super pulpy...

Tribeca 2014 Review: LAND HO! Takes Us On An Immensely Charming Icelandic Road Trip

Posted: 25 Apr 2014 07:00 AM PDT

The wonderfully freewheeling, peripatetic road movie Land Ho!, spanning the vast, rich Icelandic landscape, marks the first collaboration between two talented independent filmmakers: Martha Stephens (Passenger Pigeons, Pilgrim Song) and Aaron Katz (Dance Party USA, Quiet City, Cold Weather). Together, they have created a beautiful and quietly charming film, one not afraid of being small, in the sense of letting the naturalistic performances and atmosphere impress themselves on the audience, and not shoehorning in false melodrama or forced comedy. And although the buddy comedy road trip movie is a genre that is thoroughly well-worn at this point, Land Ho! is blissfully free of cliché and hackneyed retreads. Set to be released this summer, the film will serve as perfect counter-programming to whatever superhero movie is coming...
