Tribeca 2014 Review: Ivan Kavanagh Dumps All of His Fears into THE CANAL Posted: 18 Apr 2014 09:45 PM PDT Take one part Lynchian weirdness, one part Polanski paranoia, toss in a hefty dose of J-Horror, mix 'em and cook 'em in a pot like gumbo, as the noted American poet Ice Cube once said, add just a smidgen of Darby O'Gill and the Little People for flavor, and you have Ivan Kavanagh's Gaelic scare-fest, The Canal. Okay, so that might not be entirely accurate, but you get the idea. And if you don't, the idea is: that's a whole lot of shit crammed in there. To be fair, it tastes much better than it has any right to, but it still doesn't congeal to form a cohesive whole. In addition to the tonal palette, there are a lot of story ideas running around, fighting... |

Full Trailer For HENTAI KAMEN Director's Sentai Comedy JOSHI ZU Posted: 18 Apr 2014 12:00 PM PDT After releasing three features on Japanese screens in 2013 Kids Police and Hentai Kamen director Fukuda Yuichi is showing no signs of slowing down in 2014 with another two films already scheduled for release in the first half of the year. And coming first is his sentai comedy Joshi Zu. To battle a malicious monster, five women are gathered in front of Commander Charles against their will. The five women are selected because they each have a family name that represents a color. The five women are filled with doubts about what they are able to do collectively, but they go up against the monster using their lethal technique "Women Tornado". The five women can only use the "Women Tornado" when they are all gathered... |
VANISHING WAVES Duo Receives Development Funding For Upcoming EMERGENCE Posted: 18 Apr 2014 11:00 AM PDT What, exactly, is Kristina Buožytė and Bruno Samper's Emergence? Nobody is saying just yet but given the impact that the Lithuanian duo made with their previous effort, Vanishing Waves, expect something exceptional. All we have been able to garner thus far is that this latest effort reunites the duo with their producers at Tremora and will, once again, touch into science fiction territory. For a taste of what the duo is capable of and why you should be paying close attention, take a look at the Vanishing Waves trailer below.... |
Review: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Is A Serviceable Sequel Posted: 18 Apr 2014 10:00 AM PDT The sequel to the Spider-Man reboot sees Marc Webb returning to the director's chair and, ultimately, using the same tone and a very similar structure to that of the original, even though there are more subplots to deal with in this new installment. Kicking off with a couple of sequences driven by action and intensity, the movie eventually takes time to develop some of the character conflicts that emerged in the first one, as well as to add other dilemmas related to Oscorp and the investigation once led by Peter Parker's deceased father, Richard. The first movie made emphasis on the background of Peter's parents and, with a post-credits scene included, left a question unsolved: What's so dark about Richard's past that might hurt Peter?... |
The Many Faces Of Cillian Murphy Posted: 18 Apr 2014 09:00 AM PDT This week, Wally Pfister's Transcendence is out in cinemas, and rather than focusing on its famous lead, I thought this to be a splendid opportunity to highlight Cillian Murphy, who plays Agent Buchanan in the film. Cillian Murphy is an actor with unusual looks, slender and slightly feminine even, and this is often used to portray him as either sensitive or creepy. But, actually, he is such a good actor that he doesn't have to rely on his appearance. Good guy, bad guy, everyman, extrovert ... Cillian Murphy makes acting look easy. So once again here is a gallery quiz, consisting of eight close-ups of one of my favorite thespians. Click through the images and guess which eight movies they're from. No competition, no prizes,... |
Miike Takashi Going Back To His Roots With New Film YAKUZA APOCALYPSE Posted: 18 Apr 2014 08:00 AM PDT Miike Takashi has started shooting his new film Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War Of The Underworld, reports Screen Daily. While the announcement of any new project by the prolific director automatically brings a great deal of anticipation, what he promises to do with Yakuza Apocalypse makes it particularly exciting. "Take a hike, boring Japanese productions! Against everyone's wishes, I'm going back to my roots on this one, and plan to go on a real rampage with Yakuza Apocalypse," Miike said, "I hope my cast and crew, and even myself make it out alive." Kagayama is a feeble but loyal underling to legendary yakuza boss Kamiura, who turns out to be a vampire. When an assassin from an international syndicate arrives in Japan to deliver an ultimatum, Kamiura is... |
Review: POSEIDON REX Has Teeth But No Bite Posted: 18 Apr 2014 07:00 AM PDT Jackson Slate is in deep with some small time thugs. He owes them a lot of money and he thinks that there is Mayan treasure buried deep in a blue hole off the shore of a secluded island off the coast of Belize. What Slate does not know is that he disturbs the Poseidon Rex from its slumber when he sets of explosives at the bottom of this hole. Slate enlists the help of sexy marine biologist Sarah, local boat tour guide Henry, and a young couple on vacation to go find the gold but they end up facing off with P-Rex on the opens seas. P-Rex then goes on a murderous rampage sinking boat after boat eventually taking its all-teeth boat show to the shores... |
