LA Film Fest 2014: Watch This First Clip From Dave Boyle's MAN FROM RENO

Posted: 13 Jun 2014 06:07 PM PDT

Dave Boyle's latest film, an unexpected thriller titled Man From Reno, is about to have its world premiere at this year's LA Film Festival. We put it on our list of 15 Twitch Picks for the festival, and we now finally have a teeny, tiny taste on what we're in for with this first clip. Man From Reno stars Fujitani Ayako (Tokyo!), Kitamura Kazuki (Killers) and Pepe Serna (Scarface) and is a major departure from Boyle's more established low-key comedic past like the bittersweet diptych Surrogate Valentine and Daylight Savings, both starring indie singer-songwriter and super cool guy, Goh Nakamura.I'm interested to see Boyle spread his wings. Having met the man very briefly after one of his screenings at the Asian Film Festival of Dallas...

New To Netflix: War. Hell. Other People. Woody Allen.

Posted: 13 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT

And here we are again, faced with the dilemma of what to stream in the ethereal red monster they call Netflix. Contained in this edition of streaming premieres in various markets around the world are two decidedly different war movies with one thing in common, there is a healthy dose of farce and comedy buried in the mix, a creepy Mexican possession flick which might provoke an uneasy titter, an iconic 1980s comedy about possible temporal incest. A man who deals with the details of dead until it all catches up with him, and not terribly far away from that are several mid-tier films from Woody Allen. Onwards....

CANTINFLAS Trailer: The World's Greatest Clown Gets A Biopic

Posted: 13 Jun 2014 11:55 AM PDT

As the first American born child of a half Mexican family, Cantinflas was a presence that was both ubiquitous and mysterious to me as a child. While my own household with my parents was very culturally acclimated to life in the US, when I'd go to visit my grandparents on the weekends, it was a whole other story. My grandparents, who I love more than the air I breathe, had settled into a fairly predictable, but comforting, rhythm by the time I was old enough to pay attention to such things. Grandma was doing one of four things: cooking, crocheting, praying, or watching telenovelas (the last two occasionally took place concurrently), and grandpa was either gardening, eating, or watching TV. Grandpa's TV habits were a bit...

The Many Faces Of Peter Stormare

Posted: 13 Jun 2014 08:00 AM PDT

This week 22 Jump Street premieres (you can read Jason's review here), starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. Stars are nothing without a good villain, though, and here we have Swedish actor Peter Stormare as a drug dealer called "The Ghost". With his blunt, hulkish looks, Peter Stormare is often typecast as a soulless monster. Or a hysterical one, eating the scenery. Or just a blunt person with a rude exterior but a heart of gold. Or a sensitive neighbor. Or... Ehm... that's not really typecasting, is it? It's also not fair to say he's mostly chosen for his memorable appearance, as he is attached to a surprising number of animations and videogames as a voice-actor. A jack-of-all-trades, clearly, as long as acting is involved....

Review: HELI, Important And Unforgettable, Yet Still Taking The Easy Way Out

Posted: 13 Jun 2014 07:00 AM PDT

In Mexico there has been a lot of buzz surrounding Amat Escalante's third feature Heli. Yes, Steven Spielberg loved it at Cannes and Danny Boyle praised it at the Guanajuato Film Festival, but there's a large group of Mexican critics who aren't quite impressed. I'm right in the middle, as Heli hits me as an important piece that looks at the Mexican drug trade, but it also delivers weak acting, dialog, and a lazy conclusion. It feels less focused than Escalante's previous effort, Los Bastardos, and yet I'm pretty sure some of its scenes will remain with me for a long time. Heli is set in Guanajuato, Escalante's hometown, although that fact is never mentioned in the film. Hence we can say it's about any...
