(You WILL believe a man can fly, provided he jumps hard and adds enough corkscrews in mid-air...) One of the great things of film festivals is that they sometimes allow you a rare chance to experience foreign films as they are supposed to be seen. Little discoveries are great, of course, but to see a huge-budget extravaganza on a big screen in 3D is a treat as well. Case in point: the Imagine Fantastic Film Festival in Amsterdam showed Tsui Hark's Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon. At first I was a bit apprehensive, as the word-of-mouth about the film coming from colleagues wasn't exactly flattering. I liked the previous Detective Dee film which starred Andy Lau, so a prequel without him obviously...

Transylvania International Film Festival: Dispatch Two

Though the Transylvania region is mostly known for a certain pop culture figure, who was one of the two PR faces for this year´s edition -- the other being the world´s most known savior -- the film festival itself in Cluj is putting the region back on the culture map. Many guests complimented the warm, informal and hospitable atmosphere the festival is rapidly becoming  known for. Still Life director Uberto Pasolini even decreed that he would like to find a wife here, whereas Hungarian director Janos Szasz even confessed during the closing ceremony that he called his wife, telling her that he doesn´t want to come home. Despite such a rush and buzz from industry events and screenings, an amicable atmosphere prevailed. The 13th edition boasted...
