Outside Looking In: An Interview With EXHIBITION Director Joanna Hogg

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT

With her new film Exhibition beginning a two-week exclusive engagement at the Film Society of Lincoln Center today, along with her two previous films Unrelated and Archipelago getting theatrical runs concurrently, British filmmaker Joanna Hogg is in town and I was lucky enough to catch up with her for a chat. I saw Exhibition at last year's New York Film Festival and was blown away by it, so I was eager to pick her brains about her Antonioni-esque use of the environment in her family/relationship dramas. Unguarded and sincere, she opened up to all the questions and explained away lengthily much more so than many other directors I've talked with over the years. For this, I thank you Ms. Hogg.An exclusive theatrical run of Exhibition starts 6/20...

Review: JERSEY BOYS, Oh, What a Mess...

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT

I probably went into Jersey Boys with expectations that were too high. That's not to say I expected some grand musical masterpiece, delicately crafted and impeccably told. No, I just wanted a decent popcorn flick about a couple of wise guys from outside Newark that made it big by singing some tunes. What's the worst that can happen? We get a few decent songs, we hear a bunch of falsetto, Christopher Walken will mug for the camera as a gangster, and it'll all be in and done before things go too far awry.I can't speak for the stage show, but I can attest to this: Jersey Boys, the film, is abysmal. If you don't know already, this is the tale of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, one...

LOOPER Director Rian Johnson To Write And Direct STAR WARS EPISODE VIII

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Well, now, here's a little something for Star Wars fans to be excited about: With Episode VII still underway and future talk thus far largely centering on the one off spin off projects, word has broken that Disney and LucasFilm have already landed a writer-director for Episode VIII. And that task falls to Looper helmer Rian Johnson. And to this I say hot damn, sir. The hottest of damns.Johnson is precisely the right sort of fanboy to hand this sort of project to. One who has earned his geek credentials wholeheartedly while not being at all beholden to them. He's a fiercely talented writer with the ability to balance out character and plot and always vests his characters with enough quirk and personality to keep...

RAGNAROK: US Trailer For Norwegian Adventure Shows Off Creature Action

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 10:30 AM PDT

Norwegian Amblin-style adventure Ragnarok will soon be coming to US screens from Magnet Releasing and with the release impending a new trailer has hit the scene to promote the release. And while somewhat marred by attempts to mask that it's not an English language film - i.e. no actual dialogue but lots and lots of voice over - this new effort shows off something that none of the Norwegian marketing did: The creature at the center of the story.Archeologist Sigurd Svendsen (Pål Sverre Hagen) has for years been obsessed with the Oseberg Viking ship. The only inscription found on the ship is the enigmatic ´man knows little` written in runes. Sigurd is sure that the Oseberg ship contains the answer to the mystery of Ragnarok,...

The Many Faces Of Christopher Walken

Posted: 20 Jun 2014 08:00 AM PDT

This week, Clint Eastwood's movie adaptation of Jersey Boys arrived in theaters, and Christopher Walken is in the cast as an old gangster. And that is all the encouragement we need to make him the object of this week's mugshot quiz! For Christopher Walken is one of those actors who, in the 1980s and '90s, transformed from an "oh-him-again" actor to a force of general acknowledged awesomeness. A cameo of him will give your film at least a few noticeable scenes, and few people can do a monologue as compellingly as him. Therefore, once again here is a gallery of 11 close-ups of one of our favorite thespians to make a quiz. Click through the images below, and guess which 11 movies they're from. No...
