Teaser Poster For Wong Fei Hung Flick RISE OF THE LEGEND Unveiled Posted: 12 Jun 2014 05:00 AM PDT Eddie Peng is quickly making a name for himself as a bona fide action hero in Chinese Cinema. After impressive turns from the Taiwanese actor in films such as Jump Ashin! and Dante Lam's Unbeatable, Peng will next be seen as the revered martial arts legend Wong Fei Hung in Roy Chow Hin Yeung's upcoming Rise Of The Legend, which reintroduces the character made famous by Jet Li in Tsui Hark's Once Upon A Time In China series. Chow previously helmed Aaron Kwok horror flick Murderer and Nick Cheung/Simon Yam thriller Nightfall. At a press conference yesterday, the first official post for the film was unveiled by the actor and director, and you can check it out below.... |
Melbourne 2014 Announces The Most Ambitious Screening Yet Posted: 12 Jun 2014 12:00 AM PDT I am quite conflicted about this one. The Melbourne International Film Festival has announced it will be screening obscure French production Out 1 Noli Me Tangere in its twelve-and-a-half hour entirety. This dystopic serial directed by Jacques Rivette was commissioned then rejected by French television in 1971 and mostly concerns the aftermaths of the troubled socio-political events of May 1968."In the annals of monumental cinema, there are few objects more sacred than Out 1... The cinephile's holy grail" - New York TimesSet in the studios, cafés, streets and even movie studios, Out 1 functions as a time capsule of Paris and is a mostly improvised mish-mash of genres, something far beyond the new wave.It is exciting and interesting a television series this obscure will be playing... |
LA Film Fest 2014: Twitch Picks 15 Can't Miss Films Posted: 11 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT LA Film Fest kicks off tonight with the North American premiere of Snowpiercer (yes, finally). And while that film is old news to much of the world, there are quite a few brand spanking new films from this year's crop making their debuts at LAFF. The Twitch team has selected 15 films from the program that caught our eye for one great reason or another. Check them out below and let us know what you are excited to see.... |
Indie Comedy PREMATURE Trailer Arrives Early Posted: 11 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT If John Hughes were to have made Groundhog Day the results may not be unlike indie comedy Premature, a teen sex comedy revolving around a high school student caught in a time loop bookended by unfortunate orgasms. It's 'American Pie' meets 'Groundhog Day' in this hilarious and tender coming-of-age comedy. Rob is facing the biggest day of his life. He needs to nail a college interview ensuring his admittance to his parents' beloved alma mater, keep his cool when life-long crush Angela (nicknamed 'After School Special' for a reason) finally seems to show interest, and deal with his best friends as they realize their high school days are ending. As pressure mounts, something weird happens. He finds himself reliving the day's events over and over again.... |
DVD Review: Urasawa Naoki's MONSTER, Episodes 61-74 (End...) Posted: 11 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT (Does it take two headshots to finish off someone with a split personality?) To say I've been eagerly awaiting the fifth boxset of the Monster anime is an understatement. The fourth set ended with enough cliffhangers to break off an entire ridge. But when I held the discs physically in my grubby paws, apprehension was there as well: what if the ending sucked? What if, after 74 episodes, it ends with a sign saying "sorry, we had no money to finish it..."? Well, I need not have worried. The anime adaptation of Urasawa Naoki's Monster rightfully belongs in the shortlist of best animated series in existence, Japanese or otherwise. It has an ending. I will keep the remainder of this review pretty much spoilerfree as... |
Now on DVD: VIDEO NASTIES, GESTAPO'S LAST ORGY, & DEPORTED WOMEN OF THE SS SPECIAL SECTION Posted: 11 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT This month super indie DVD distributor Severin Films are releasing director Jake West's (Evil Aliens, Doghouse) amazing even handed documentary, Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorshop, and Video Tape. To help celebrate that monumentally awesome release (more below), Severin sublabel Intervision Picture Corp. are releasing a pair of classic Nazisploitation films from the infamous DPP list, Cesare Canvari's Gestapo's Last Orgy, and Rino Di Silvestro's Deported Women of the SS Special Section. All three of these releases are essential for exploitation fans around the world, and here's why:... |
Let The Monster Out With Full SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR Trailer Posted: 11 Jun 2014 12:30 PM PDT Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller have gotten the gang back together for Sin City: A Dame To Kill For and after what seems an age of teasing and cast announcements and deliberately stirred up faux controversy about breasts in marketing we have the first full trailer. Which looks and sounds and feels pretty much exactly like the original Sin City did. And that's a good thing in my books.Returning cast members Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis are joined here by Josh Brolin, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Eva Green and more in a story that combines two of Miller's classic tales with fresh material. Take a look below and let us know what you think.... |
Be Charmed By THE BOXTROLLS In Full Trailer Posted: 11 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT In a world where Pixar have stumbled somewhat in their last few outings and Aardman have never managed to replicate their small screen success on the big screen, is it fair to say that stop motion animation house Laika have emerged as the most consistent players in the world of big screen animation? It may just be, given that the just released full trailer for The Boxtrolls looks to build upon the high standards of Coraline and ParaNorman.Cheesebridge is a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At... |

Watch: Exclusive Clip From Military Thriller DRONES Posted: 11 Jun 2014 09:00 AM PDT Rick Rosenthal's military thriller Drones opens in cinemas and on iTunes and VOD on June 27. We have a clip to share with you. Though I have not seen the film yet, it would appear that Eloise Mumford's character, Sue Lawson, has become conflicted with her mission when through their observations their target is surrounded by family members. Sounds like that one scene in Clear and Present Danger played out for 82 minutes. And I am a bit perplexed by the poster as well. Because it looks like it was designed for a video game. Then that got me thinking because that is really what these soldiers are doing, playing an elaborate video game. Though the stakes are higher than a decent KDR. ... |
First Look At Trailer For Leong's Edgy Techno Thriller CAMERA Posted: 11 Jun 2014 08:30 AM PDT If you feel like it's been a while since a new talent came out of Hong Kong to seize the public attention with something edgy and exciting ... well, you're not alone. With the established players continually chasing the mainland Chinese audience it feels that Hong Kong's output in recent years has become increasingly homogenized with little room for fresh young voices but James Leong looks to buck that trend with his upcoming near future set techno thriller Camera. Ming is a surveillance expert with an obsession: he wants to film everything that happens to him. It's a compulsion linked to an accident which left him blind in one eye. When a new technology becomes available that can restore his eyesight, Ming jumps at the... |
Destroy All Monsters: The Fault In Our Reading Posted: 11 Jun 2014 08:00 AM PDT Intellectual bullying met deep-seated insecurity in spectacular fashion last week, when Slate took the release of the mega-profitable film adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars as an opportunity to declare that all Young Adult fiction, everywhere, is bad. It was the sort of laughably inadvisable click-baiting that deserved to be summarily laughed off the internet - until, of course, the internet responded. (Read Peter's review of the film here.) The majority of the public reaction to the piece was, as was the case with the Kevin Kline character from A Fish Called Wanda, proof that if you call someone stupid, you only invite them to prove the point. Meanwhile, if writer Ruth Graham had a good point to make under all her reader-shaming rhetoric,... |
Watch: Deleted Scene From Atom Egoyan's DEVIL'S KNOT Posted: 11 Jun 2014 07:00 AM PDT Atom Egoyan's Memphis Three drama Devil's Knot dropped on Blu-ray and DVD yesterday. We have a deleted scene from the film to share with you. Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth star in this gripping film based on the true story of the murder of three young boys in West Memphis, Ark. and the murder trial that shocked the nation.... |
