Check Out The Half-Shells On These TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES One-Sheets!

While the world goes crazy over Michael Bay's fourth offering of toy robot-inspired global destruction, let us not forget that he has another dollop of kid-friendly action entertainment just around the corner. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, produced by Bay, and directed by Jonathan Liebesman is due to hit screens on 8 August, and is shaping up to be one of the more goofy entries in this summer's line-up. Megan Fox, Will Arnett and William Fichtner star alongside the foursome of mutated shell-dwellers, as they eat pizza, spout outdated surf slang and attempt to fight crime in New York City. Is there still an audience out there for these guys? We'll find out soon enough. Meanwhile, here's a quartet of hero-sized character one-sheets.The city needs heroes....

Review: HUNGRY GHOST RITUAL Has No Appetite For Horror

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 11:11 PM PDT

Nick Cheung follows a string of critical and commercial hits with his debut as writer-director, a seasonal horror flick in which he also takes the leading role. While Cheung has a keen eye for detail when it comes to the traditions associated with the Hungry Ghost Festival, his scripting is flimsy and cliched while his direction lacks atmosphere or genuine chills.Nick Cheung has been a regular fixture on Hong Kong screens since the early nineties, but it was his collaborations with Johnnie To that drove him towards leading man status. Since his award-winning turn in Dante Lam's 2008 thriller, Beast Stalker, Cheung cemented his status as one of the more talented and interesting performers in the local industry. Last year he starred in Hong Kong's...

Review: DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Doesn't Monkey Around

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 08:00 PM PDT

There will be plenty of hyperbole flung about in celebration of this film with the joy and abandon of an ape playfully lobbing his poop at an appreciative audience.Yet like the scatological simian show at your local zoo, there may be those that fixate on the repellent parts of the display, annoyed perhaps by the fact, they may claim, that this latest Apes film feels like a previously enjoyed meal - something familiar, sure, but no longer sustaining after passing through the process that created it, a waft of desperation and creative emptiness that's indicative of this "Summer of Sequels", a now annual occurrence that's as much the new normal as the forthcoming ravages of global warming. In other words, some people just won't like this...

Review: LAND HO!, An Immensely Charming Trip To Iceland

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 03:00 PM PDT

The wonderfully freewheeling, peripatetic road movie Land Ho!, spanning the vast, rich Icelandic landscape, marks the first collaboration between two talented independent filmmakers: Martha Stephens (Passenger Pigeons, Pilgrim Song) and Aaron Katz (Dance Party USA, Quiet City, Cold Weather). Together, they have created a beautiful and quietly charming film, one not afraid of being small, in the sense of letting the naturalistic performances and atmosphere impress themselves on the audience, and not shoehorning in false melodrama or forced comedy. And although the buddy comedy road trip movie is a genre that is thoroughly well-worn at this point, Land Ho! is blissfully free of cliché and hackneyed retreads. Set to be released this summer, the film will serve as perfect counter-programming to whatever superhero movie is...

London Indian 2014 Review: AS SEEN BY THE REST Presents An Intricate Puzzle Box For Movie Buffs

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 01:00 PM PDT

A thrilling mystery in several parts, As Seen By the Rest (Ulidavaru Kandante) is a bold leap forward for the cinema of Karnataka, India. The film is both completely comfortable in its own skin and with its identity as popular Indian cinema, and well aware of its influences, which it wears proudly on its sleeves. Writer/director/star Rakshit Shetty has delivered a bold and and confident sophomore feature after his well received Simple Agi Ondh Love Story from 2013, and his is a voice that deserves close attention. You may never have heard of the Kannada language, but their cinematic language is growing beyond their borders quickly.Sheetal Shetty plays Regina, a young and ambitious reporter pitching a series of articles to her editor that revolve around a...

Watch The Raw And Gritty US Trailer For Acclaimed Prison Drama STARRED UP

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 12:30 PM PDT

It seems that there are one or two films like David Mackenzie's Starred Up every year: Films that rack up an impressive array of festival selections - in this case Telluride, Toronto and Tribeca - and nearly universal critical acclaim and yet somehow seem to run strangely under the radar. Here's hoping Tribeca Film can stir up the sort of attention Starred Up deserves for its release.19-year-old Eric (Jack O'Connell, star of the upcoming UNBROKEN), arrogant and ultra-violent, is prematurely transferred to the same adult prison facility as his estranged father (Ben Mendelsohn, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES). As his explosive temper quickly finds him enemies in both prison authorities and fellow inmates -- and his already volatile relationship with his father is pushed past breaking...

Opening tonight with the US premiere of Miike Takashi's The Mole Song: Undercover Agent Reiji, Japan Cuts, the New York festival of contemporary Japanese cinema, is a grand smorgasbord for cinephiles of all tastes. This year's festival features a religious girl vs. a talking genital growth (The Passion); a menacing samurai and his adorable cat (Neko Samurai); a children's rock n' roll concert (Hello! BOYHOOD Interview: Richard Linklater and Ellar Coltrane on 12 Years of Filmmaking

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 09:30 AM PDT

The morning after Boyhood had its Austin premiere at SXSW, I found myself with about 10 other journalists, all eagerly awaiting the arrival of writer/director Richard Linklater and star/former-boy Ellar Coltrane for a roundtable discussion of their respective life's work. SXSW marked the second festival appearance of Boyhood, but given that the film was shot in Texas, the premiere in Austin, a city where an especially memorable portion of the film takes place, it came with a sense of homecoming and geography, considering Linklater spent much of his own boyhood in Houston before relocating to Austin in his early 20s to find independence and develop his voice.Though the film contains many nods and in-jokes regarding growing up Texan (many of which only became apparent...

Iñárritu's BIRDMAN To Open Venice

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Italy, it would appear, will be ground zero in the resurrection of Michael Keaton's career. After a long period out of the spotlight the hyper-talented Keaton has been gradually re-entering the conversation over the past few years but it is his part in Alejandro Iñárritu's Birdman that now gives him the chance to shine in a lead role seemingly tailored for his particular talents - to say nothing of Ed Norton's underpants - and it will do so on one of the world's largest stages, having just been announced as the opening selection of the Venice International Film Festival. Which means that the generally arthouse heavy festival may actually have a bit of fun this year. Take a look at the trailer below for a...

Guillermo Del Toro Planning 'Really Bizarre' Film Before PACIFIC RIM 2

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 08:30 AM PDT

One of the things that has made Guillermo Del Toro such a fascinating talent to watch is his refusal to lock himself into any one way of doing things, the man moving easily and consistently between big studio projects and smaller indie fare from project to project. And lest you had any fear that the run from the massive Pacific Rim to the merely very, very large Crimson Peak and on to the once-again-massive Pacific Rim 2 would spell the end of his smaller and more personal output, well put those fears to rest for Del Toro has spilled to Collider that he plans to shoot a small black and white, "really bizarre" film before getting into principal photography on Pacific Rim 2.Del Toro is...

Review: BOYHOOD, An Extraordinary Chronicle Of Growing Up

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Shot over the course of 12 years with the same core cast, Richard Linklater's latest film Boyhood is a rare cinematic feat for reasons that go beyond its already unorthodox production. Call it "This American Boy's Life", Linklater's chronicle of growing up white and middle class in America is extraordinary merely because it is -- for being white and middle class in America --so careful, considerate and contemplative with what can seem ordinary.Boyhood begins with a shot that feels lifted from the director's animated dream-scape/ philosophy course Waking Life. We are witness to the sky: a brilliant blue, with fluffy clouds that look like they are out of, well... a dream. In one shot, even before we see our hero, Linklater establishes an exacting theme...

Chris Columbus appears to be getting back to his roots. The Tracking Board bring word that Columbus has signed on as a producer for new Goonies and Gremlins films, both of which will reportedly be sequels set some thirty years following the originals. Columbus, of course, wrote both of the original films and while there have been rumblings of both off and on for years now this is the firmest indication yet that they are actually moving forward. There is no word yet whether Gremlins director Joe Dante will return but Goonies helmer Richard Donner is reportedly on board for the sequel as well and hopes to bring the entire original cast back with him...

Turkey's MUSKA (AMULET) Chills With First Trailer

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 07:03 AM PDT

Turkey appears to be riding something of a wave of genre cinema recently. We've covered multiple intriguing horror and action projects in these pages in recent months and delivering perhaps the strongest trailer of the lot of them is Özkan Çelik's Muska (Amulet). Though the teaser gives up very little in terms of story it boasts fabulous cinematography and sound design along with the confidence to let the mood build without resorting to a lot of banging and crashing. And build it very definitely does. Take a look below. Muska hits Turkish screens July 25th....
