The folks behind the Irish sci-fi horror project Black Horizon will be in Montreal to show off their upcoming flick. They have a nifty new poster to share with you. Three weeks of genre debauchery, this year has been my first taste of this remarkable fest, and it's already been loads of fun. Also another look at Richard Linklater's Boyhood, the remarkable film about coming of age told over a decade-long narrative.Video embedded below... |
Fantasia 2014 Review: Chew On This - ZOMBEAVERS Is Dam Excellent Posted: 21 Jul 2014 12:00 PM PDT It begins with the pun.Sure, you have a slew of straight-to-VOD crap that is little more than a title stretched too thin over its running time. Be it Sharknado or other of its ilk, it's as if a bunch of drunk people (or, worse, marketing executives) sat around a table and coined a phrase and then retroactively crafted a narrative around it.There are a few things terrific about Zombeavers.First, that's a damn good play on words, there's a certain elegance in its simplicity. You know what the film's about straight from the title, and are now just along for the ride. Snakes on a Plane had that going for it, with its marriage of title and concept, but the film still felt like it was... |
NY Asian 2014: Director Fei Xing Judges The Court Of Public Opinion In SILENT WITNESS Posted: 21 Jul 2014 11:00 AM PDT A huge hit in its native China, Silent Witness starts as a taut courtroom drama and then writer/director Fei Xing flips the script to turn it into something more. He spoke with me about this commentary on social media and the court of public opinion. The Lady Miz Diva: I was prepared for a courthouse thriller and then you made me cry. Was this what you intended with SILENT WITNESS? Your previous film, THE MAN BEHIND THE COURTYARD HOUSE was also known for twisting genres. Is that kind of cinematic bait and switch creatively pleasing to you?Fei Xing: Yes! {Laughs} This is why I like films. I feel like films should be a wonderful journey. So I think the best films have changes and also surprises and also... |
Donnie Yen In KUNG FU JUNGLE Teaser: Smile When You Say That Posted: 21 Jul 2014 10:00 AM PDT The English-language title only hints at the hard-hitting action in the first teaser for Kung Fu Jungle, starring Donnie Yen. Directed by Teddy Chen (Bodyguards and Assassins), and formerly known as, variously, Best of the Best, Last of the Best, and Kung Fu Killer, the upcoming release also stars Wang Baoqiang (Iceman). Via Film Combat Syndicate, here's the official synopsis: A vicious killer (Wang Baoqiang) is going round Hong Kong killing top martial arts exponents. When convicted killer and kung fu expert, Xia (Donnie Yen) hears of this, he offers to help the police catch the killer, in return for his freedom. However, the canny and lethal killer eludes them again and again. Although the latter has made it quite clear that Xia would be his ultimate challenge,... |
First Look At TORO LOCO: SANGRIENTO (AKA TORO LOCO: BLOODTHIRSTY) Posted: 21 Jul 2014 09:00 AM PDT Beware the wandering homeless man who is seeking vengeance. Francisco Melo is featured in the first look at Toro Loco: Sangriento (aka Toro Loco: Bloodthirsty), a new action comedy by Patricio Valladares (Hidden in the Woods). Valladares adapted from a comic book he did with Andrea Cavaletto. The official synopsis gets right to the point: A homeless man wanders the lands in search of revenge for the murder of his son at the hands of an unknown gang. Upon arriving in a new town he finds himself trapped in a city drowning in chaos, its people firmly in the grasp of a ruthless crime boss peddling the mind-bending drug, "El Ultimo Aire." This man is a legend, a hit man, the killer of killers and the people... |
Hey, Mexico! Win Kim Ki-duk's PIETA On DVD Posted: 21 Jul 2014 08:00 AM PDT Winner of the prestigious Golden Lion at Venice 2012, Kim Ki-duk's Pieta is a truly great film; brutal, perverse, violent, but also heartfelt. It premiered in Mexico last year as part of Cineteca Nacional's Muestra 55, and now the DVD from ZatMeni DistribuciĆ³n just hit stores."Lee Kang-do (Lee Jung-jin) is a brutal debt collector, a lone wolf operating entirely without conscience and positively brutal in his efficiency. The scheme is simple. Money is lent to poor tradespeople at a rate they cannot possibly afford to repay, with the borrowers forced to sign insurance policies against future injury and loss of income with Lee's employer the beneficiary. And when they inevitably cannot pay, it is up to Lee to cripple the debtors and collect on the... |
PREDESTINATION Trailer Twists And Turns Through Time Posted: 21 Jul 2014 07:30 AM PDT A new trailer for Predestination teases dazzling possibilities for time travel. The new feature by the Spierig Brothers (Undead, Daybreakers) spins a fascinating yarn that takes place in an intricately-detailed alternate universe, slowly transforming into a mind-bending thriller. I saw it at SXSW in March, and although I got tripped up by the paradoxes, this is a dreamy rich ride, and a tender character study featuring an outstanding performance by Sarah Snook and very good ones by Ethan Hawke and Noah Taylor. Predestination chronicles the life of a Temporal Agent sent on an intricate series of time-travel journeys designed to ensure the continuation of his law enforcement career for all eternity. Now, on his final assignment, the Agent must pursue the one criminal that has eluded him... |
