The Dream Role Becomes A Nightmare In THE ACTOR Trailer

Oh, the lengths that some people are willing to go through to further their career. In the South African horror flick The Actor, someone is taking their preparation for a potential role a few too many steps too far. Simon (Aidan Whytock) lives for two things: his dream of becoming an acclaimed actor, and his love for Sarah (Heidi Bottcher), his twelve-year old daughter he only gets to see on the weekends. Unfortunately, as his ex-wife Emily (Shannyn Fourie) often points out, his career is stagnating, and Nathan (Gregory Parvess), his best friend turned agent, isn't trying that hard to help him.So, when Simon is offered a chance to audition for the role of a man possessed by a demon, he decides to go the distance,...

This Is BARAKATI Trailer!

Posted: 23 Jul 2014 03:30 AM PDT

There's a large gap between stories in our local legends that is open for interpretation that's been exercised in many great adventure movies like Indiana Jones.Indonesian effort Barakati's first trailer only shows off the epic 300-style visuals and completely misses the chance to present the story in the hope that visuals alone can hook potential audiences. We can easily assume, judging from the poster, that the scene we presented with is only some flashback parts of the main story.Abdul Manan, a young archeologist, embark on a journey to Buton island to unveil the missing history of Gajah Mada, a legendary military leader of Majapahit empire, last day on earth upon his meeting with an english journalist Gerry Johnson who possessed an old scripture.Directed by Monty...

Simon Pegg Chases "A-Penis" In First Trailer For HECTOR AND THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS

Posted: 22 Jul 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Simon Pegg is back with his special brand of happiness, this time as a psychiatrist in the throes of professional existential crisis, who sets out to taste the world for himself and learn just what it is that makes people happy. The film is based on a popular novel by French psychiatrist François Lelord, Le voyage d'Hector ou la recherche du bonheur ("Hector's Voyage or the Search for Happiness"), a thought-provoking book on the psychology of happiness, written for laypeople. The film seems like it might be a bit... mushy... and director Peter Chelsom certainly has a record of feel good fare with the likes of The Mighty, Serendipity, the Richard Gere-starring remake of Shall We Dance? and, wait for it, Hannah Montana: The Movie to his credit. However, the cast in this includes...

Edgar Wright's Next Looks To Be BABY DRIVER

Posted: 22 Jul 2014 01:45 PM PDT

In May, Edgar Wright left Ant-Man, a film he had been developing with Marvel Studios for nigh on half a decade. If you were a fan of his Cornetto trilogy, or just of ants and/or men in general, but especially of men named Paul Rudd, then a tear was most likely shed that day. Rumors spun that Wright would then jump onto a big screen adaptation of the TV show The Night Stalker with Johnny Depp in the starring role. Those rumors died down and what we are left with is Wright turning to another long-gestating project, the awesomely named and equally mysterious Baby Driver.Deadline reports that this will be Wright's next directorial effort, with his old pals from Working Title Films producing. Written by...

CUBAN FURY Clips: It's A Dance-Off To The Death!

Posted: 22 Jul 2014 01:15 PM PDT

Now available to watch via various Video On Demand platforms, and coming to DVD next week (July 29), Cuban Fury stars Nick Frost in the tale of a man who learns how to dance the salsa so he can woo his new boss, Rashida Jones. But the two clips we have to share today do not feature Rashida Jones, who is the radiant love of my fantasies a very lovely woman. No, we have strictly manly men in these clips, specifically Nick Frost and Chris O'Dowd, the latter of whom looks to be an evil nemesis. In the first clip, O'Dowd boasts about his date with the aforementioned boss, while Frost seethes. Then, in the second clip, it looks like Mr. Frost has taken his salsa...

DEAR WHITE PEOPLE Trailer Makes A Stand With Wit

Posted: 22 Jul 2014 12:30 PM PDT

Justin Simien's Sundance darling Dear White People is coming to US theaters October 17, so today we get the full trailer for the college set satire. And it's quite chatty. Then again, when things get this racial and political almost all the cards are on the table for the players to see. Simien's sharp grasp of the satirical, without downplaying character for mere points value, has already won over many festival audiences. Will a wider audience catch on?While the trailer feels a little one-note, there seems to be a smart, subversive, and even a little wacky film hiding underneath. I see Whit Stillman levels of snarky collegiate anxiety mixed with shades of National Lampoonery, all aiming to address the "Obama Age" of race in America....

HONEYMOON: New Poster Is Horribly Mysterious

Posted: 22 Jul 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Set to make its Canadian debut at Fantasia in Montreal tonight (July 22), Honeymoon is "very much its own beast," according to our own Ryland Aldrich. It's "a good story, excellently told, and very, very scary." That story follows a newly-married couple who decide to spend their honeymoon at a family lake house in a remote, isolated location. Things happen to disrupt what should be a lazy, blissful week, and then more things happen, and then things get horrifying. Leigh Janiak directed; Rose Leslie, Harry Treadaway, Ben Huber, and Hanna Brown star. A new poster is suitably mysterious, while suggesting the horror that lies within. It's heading to theaters and various Video On Demand platforms on September 12. A new trailer has also been released, which, for...

AKIRA Refuses To Die In Hollywood

Posted: 22 Jul 2014 10:30 AM PDT

In Hollywood, old ideas never die, they just get put 'on the back burner' until someone comes up with a brilliant new take that will push it to 'the front burner.' And that appears to be true for the live-action version of Akira. Warner Bros., whose slate revolves around big-idea, big-budget projects that translate easily around the world, has not given up on Akira, inspired, however loosely at this point, on Otomo Katsuhiro's manga. The studio put the project 'on the back burner' in January 2012, just before production was scheduled to begin, with reports indicating the budget was too high. Director Jaume Collet-Serra left the project at that time, but was reportedly in talks to return in August 2013, with production penciled in for spring...

Toronto 2014: First Wave, Galas And Special Presentations

Posted: 22 Jul 2014 09:45 AM PDT

Like clockwork, the publicity machine for the Toronto International Film Festival revs up about this time every year to announce a number of the high profile films coming to the festival in September. A few Gala Red Carpet world premieres are announced, as well as the Special Presentations, those films that have usually have played other top-tier festivals (Berlin, Cannes, etc.) around the world, and typically already have North American distribution.Twitch readers should note new films from Michael R. Roskam (whose Bullhead was a big hit in these parts), and is back with The Drop, starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and perhaps the last film from James Gandolfini; also, David Cronenberg (Maps To The Stars which bowed at Cannes); indie actioner American Heist (starring Adrian...

Durban 2014 Review: COLD HARBOUR Gets Moody About Corruption

Posted: 22 Jul 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Another South African film at the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) brings another challenging reflection on the country's modern identity. This time, it's Carey McKenzie tackling corruption with her moody and noirish crime thriller, Cold Harbour, which just had its world premiere at DIFF. This is McKenzie's first fiction feature film, her previous major production being an award-winning documentary, Original Child Bomb, which took the Grand Jury Prize at Silverdocs and Bologna Human Rights Nights. An associated short film, B Is For BOMB, won the Cannes 2006 Short Film Corner competition. After watching Cold Harbour I'm not surprised to learn that McKenzie has a documentary background; though fictional, the film deals very forthrightly, and even-handedly, with the complex reality of corruption in South Africa. Her empathy for, and dedication...

HOW & WHY, Charlie Kaufman TV Show, Does Not Pass Go At FX

Posted: 22 Jul 2014 08:30 AM PDT

It sounded like a triumphant return to television for Charlie Kaufman, the Academy Award-winning writer of Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, but 'twas not to be, at least at one U.S. cable broadcaster. How & Why, a comedy pilot created by Kaufman and starring Michael Cera, has not been picked up by FX, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and Netflix has turned it down as well. The show is still being shopped around to other networks, with IFC considered a possibility, but the price tag associated with the series is considered a possible stumbling block. The series' premise sounded intriguing, revolving around "a man who can explain how and why a nuclear reactor works but is otherwise clueless about life." The great John Hawkes was set to...

Latin Beat: Mexico's Romantic Comedies, Plus CANTINFLAS; Peru's Apocalyptic Comedy JAPY ENDING

Posted: 22 Jul 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Mexico is in love with romantic comedies at the moment, according to Eric Ortiz Garcia, our correspondent in Mexico, and that includes the upcoming Casi Treinta and Amor de Mis Amores. He's already seen one, so he has comments on that, plus the trailers for both. He also has a Spanish-language trailer for Cantinflas, a bio-pic about the popular star. Meanwhile, Ernesto Zelaya Minano tells us that Peru is expecting the apocalyptic comedy Japy Ending, which features a "who's who" of local celebrities. He's got the trailer, too. Plus, just for fun: the Spanish-language poster for Guardians of the Galaxy, which releases August 1 and is pretty much the same all around the world ......
