Johnny Depp Joins Kevin Smith's YOGA HOSERS

Posted: 19 Aug 2014 01:30 PM PDT

Johnny Depp is teaming with Kevin Smith? Yup. Smith had this to say about Yoga Hosers in July: "There are two characters in a convenience store in Tusk that you see for five minutes, very much Ronsencrantz and Guildenstern. I've built a whole movie around them and I have brought one of the other characters from Tusk back." In fact, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the entire cast of Tusk is returning for the second installment of Smith's so-called True North Trilogy, "steeped in Canadian myths and culture." (Since I was born in California and now live in Texas, I'll leave it to my Canadian colleagues to comment further on the authenticity of the Canadian content.) So, Depp is joining Michael Parks, Justin Long, Haley...

Irie Yu's HIBI ROCK Trailer Will Set Your Hair On Fire

Posted: 19 Aug 2014 10:00 AM PDT

One of the brightest lights of the young generation of Japanese directors, Irie Yu burst on to the international scene five years ago with the release of his 2009 super low budget indie 8000 Miles. A scrappy and energetic chronicle of small town kids trying to break into the big city rap scene, 8000 Miles earned Irie a glowing reception around the world and a firther two movies continuing to chronicle the characters' lives. And while Irie may have shifted to the big studios for his current wave of projects - 2014 title Escape From Fuji Q is still and indie but his next two are for Japanese major studios Toho and Shochiku - his signature style appears to have survived fully intact. Gripping First Trailer For Acclaimed UK Action Film '71

Posted: 19 Aug 2014 09:30 AM PDT

Whatever else you may say about the Berlin International Film Festival it is not an event particularly known for embracing genre oriented film. Sensitive dramas, yes. Arthouse experimentation, absolutely. And yet it was a heart pounding action thriller that emerged as the buzz title from the Berlinale's 2014 edition with Yann Demange's '71 setting audiences buzzing.Already a known figure in the UK thanks to his hugely acclaimed inner city drama Top Boy, highly sought after music video and commercials director Demange made the leap to features with a picture that cast rising star Jack O'Connell as an English soldier stationed in Belfast and caught in enemy territory at the height of the Troubles. If he wants to survive he needs to run and get himself...

Norwegian director Ole Endresen knows what he likes. And what he likes are drily absurd comedies of fringe players in fringe sports driven to extremes as they are pushed ever farther to the fringes of polite society. Endresen had a local hit with his King Curling following this particular path and he's looking to do it again with the upcoming Chasing Berlusconi (Jagten Pa Berlusconi). The slightly chubby harness racer Bjarte does not get the good horses anymore, and is forced to enter the criminal path in order to keep menacing creditors at bay. A fatal choice of partners ends up in a failed doping attempt, and a consequent kidnapping of the top horse Berlusconi. A bloodthirsty hunting party consisting of two eager financial crime investigators,...

How do you bounce back after walking away from your shot at a superhero franchise you'd spent years and years developing? If you're Edgar Wright you get busy. Very, very busy. Wright's got a handful of projects bubbling at the moment but here's the one that is immediately going to jump to the top of everyone's list:Though the Cornetto Trilogy of Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End has come to its conclusion, Simon Pegg spilled in an interview on BBC6 that he and Wright have begun collaborating on a new script. He won't say what it's about. He won't say what it's called - though he does confirm they have a title. In Pegg's words: "Edgar and I were having a...

Review: MISSION BLUE, A Reflection On A Single Life As A Stand-In For All Life

Posted: 19 Aug 2014 07:01 AM PDT

I am never one to say no to beautifully lit underwater photography, either in grainy 16 mm or pristine HD.  Here there is plenty, but the most compelling image in activist/biopic documentary, Mission Blue, is that of a lone plastic lawn chair, sparsely illuminated on the ocean floor. It is a bit of detritus found thousands of miles from land and a reminder that the consequences of our civilization of convenience and plenty, range far. This is hardly news to you, savvy filmgoer and documentary enthusiast, and director Fisher Stevens (with Robert Nixon) are aware that the audience for their film knows the ocean has been used by humanity as a vast sewer. Thus, the intent of their documentary is to frame things in a new...

Watch The Mouth-Watering Trailer For TABULA RASA

Posted: 19 Aug 2014 05:01 AM PDT

I still remember the opening scene from Ang Lee's Eat, Drink, Man, Woman, one of the most mouth-watering scenes ever, which alone has great repeat viewing value and shows a lot about one culture and the story that follows. The new trailer for Tabula Rasa hit me in exactly the same way, highlighting the Minangnese culinary arts from Sumatra that are very popular and widespread throughout Indonesia, while the main character, from Papua, works in a struggling lower class restaurant. Here's the official synopsis: Hans, a young man from Serui, Papua, has a dream of becoming a professional football player. Yet fate has a different agenda, when Hans almost loses his will to live he meets Mak, owner of a humble Minangnese restaurant (lapau). In the midst of...
