Review: JIGARTHANDA, A Mini-Meta-Masterpiece Of Madurai Mob Movie Mimicry

Posted: 12 Aug 2014 06:01 PM PDT

Karthik Subbaraj's Jigarthanda is long, juggles multiple storylines, tells complex stories in tiny chunks, is loaded for bear with insider references for Tamil film aficionados that will frequently leave newbs scratching their heads, and is nearly impossible to write about without spoiling something along the way.Jigarthanda is also incredibly fresh, spell-binding, whiplash-inducing, genre convention bending, energetic, smart, and one of the very few recent examples of popular Indian cinema that I can throw my full support behind.Jigarthanda may be this year's finest Tamil film so far.Attempting to formally review this beast in any standard mode is a fool's errand. Subbaraj's jigsaw construction means that knowing more than a few lines of exposition before going in would equate to spoiling the film. Not in the contemporary...

MOOD INDIGO And ZERO THEOREM To Open Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival

Posted: 12 Aug 2014 05:00 PM PDT

The Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival announced the first four titles of this year's lineup for our festival. Formerly the Dark Bridges Film Festival, we announced these four titles the other night during a screening of Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer at our home during the festival, The Broadway Theatre. We are very pleased to bring these festival favorites to Saskatoon and its growing genre scene. Michel Gondry's Mood Indigo and Terry Gilliam's Zero Theorem will be our opening films. We also announced the addition of Jim Mickle's awesome adaptation of Joe R. Lansdale's Cold In July -- as a Lansdale fan first and Mickle fan second I am totally biased on this one -- and zombie flick Life After Beth. I am using all inclusive language because I am a programmer...

MEN WHO SAVE THE WORLD: Watch The Trailer For The Quirky Malaysian Comedy

Posted: 12 Aug 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Move a house, find the Oily Man! Or, at least, that's what the villagers at the center of Liew Seng Tat's Toronto International Film Festival selection believe has happened in the upcoming comedy Men Who Save The World (Lelaki Harapan Dunia). The superstitious inhabitants of a small Malaysian village go to ever sillier extremes to exorcize the "ghost" they believe is haunting a dilapidated house, in this boisterous and richly observed rural comedy. Check out the trailer below, English subtitles included!...

Find Hope In The Aftermath Of Horrific Violence With The Promo For South African Doc ALISON

Posted: 12 Aug 2014 12:30 PM PDT

The woman smiling at you above should arguably not be smiling. She shouldn't even be alive. And that Alison Botha not only survived an absolutely brutal attempt on her life but has transcended it to bring a message of hope to people is a story very well worth telling, which is precisely what South African filmmaker Uga Carlini is doing.Raped. Neck slashed more than 17 times. Stabbed in the stomach over 37 times. Disembowelled. Dumped on the outskirts of a nature reserve, dead - or so they thought... One of the worst things about gender violence is the fear and shame it breeds. That is why, when the going gets really tough, we need ordinary people of extraordinary strength and courage to jolt us out...

SEPTIC MAN: The Director Approved Drinking Game!

Posted: 12 Aug 2014 10:30 AM PDT

Jesse Thomas Cook's Septic Man is available on VOD in the U.S. today (August 12th) and will open in select cinemas on Friday, August 15th. For those of you who will be watching the film at home we have come up with a drinking game with the help of the director himself. Cook did a quick review of his film and has some suggestions if you want to go really hard core. To start, chug a beer whenever someone pukes. This happens often enough that you will get hosed. And if you want to get completely annihilated then also drink when someone drinks sewage or blood, or, when someone opens the lid to the sewer. Now, we want everyone to have fun with any movie they watch. We'd rather...

Melbourne 2014 Review: LIFE AFTER BETH, A Tame Zom-Com

Posted: 12 Aug 2014 09:01 AM PDT

The ever sardonic Aubrey Plaza stars as Beth, alongside Dane DeHaan's Zach, in this frequently odd but half-cooked zombie comedy from the writer of the excellent I Heart Huckabees. Director Jeff Baena only lends some of his brain to the task, unlike Huckabees, a miasma of complex comedy, Life After Beth is only part-way good. It particularly falls apart by the film's tepid ending. It starts strong; Beth is dead, she was bitten by a snake on a hike. Cut to Zach (DeHaan) who is seen slack jawed picking out black serviettes for her funeral service. We soon learn he is the boyfriend, a strange concoction of Goth sensibility and weakling persona; his character is both poorly presented and frequently annoying. DeHaan is simply not...
