Review: Lame Leads Sink THE PIRATES Posted: 12 Aug 2014 12:30 AM PDT Fast on the heels of Kundo: Age of the Rampant and Roaring Currents, the summer's latest period blockbuster enters a crowded field in a market that has of late become oversaturated with similar fare. With lowbrow, poorly executed humor tucked into an uninspired medley of rote genre mechanics, The Pirates fares the worst among this year's large-scale Korean productions. When a gray whale swallows a royal seal, various factions set off to find it, including bandits, pirates and the government that lost it. Soldier Sa-jung defies his commander and following a duel with his former master Hong-gab he defects to the wild and becomes the leader of a group of bandits. Meanwhile pirate Yeo-wol leads a mutiny against her cruel captain So-ma. Soon they cross... |

AUTOMATA Posters Show A Battered And Weary Antonio Banderas Posted: 11 Aug 2014 08:30 PM PDT It's been five years since Spanish director Gabe Ibáñez crept onto the film scene with his subtlely disturbing thriller Hierro, and I for one have been waiting in anticipation for his next project. It looks like the waiting is almost over. Two posters have just dropped for his new film, science fiction thriller Automata, starring Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith and Dylan McDermott. An insurance agents of a robotics corporation routinely investigates the case of manipulating a robot. What he discovers will have profound consequences for the future of humanity.Hierro is a deft combination of arthouse character study and neo-thriller, with Ibáñez introducing what could become his signature cinematographic landscape eye and deep consideration or larger issues of identity and violence. Intelligent, philosophical sci-fi (Vanishing Waves, Moon,... |

Robin Williams Dead Of Suspected Suicide Posted: 11 Aug 2014 05:05 PM PDT Very sad news today with word breaking that Oscar winning actor and comedian Robin Williams has been found dead in his home of a suspected suicide. The immensely talented Williams launched himself to massive fame as one of the title characters in hit sitcom Mork And Mindy, only later learning to channel his immense manic energy into a string of compelling performances. In these parts Williams will always be best remembered for his collaborations with Terry Gilliam, his part in The Fisher King standing as a particular highlight. Here is the official statement from Marin County Police:On August 11, 2014, at approximately 11:55 a.m, Marin County Communications received a 9-1-1 telephone call reporting a male adult had been located unconscious and not breathing inside his... |
WHAT DOESN'T KILL YOU: Watch The Trailer For Rob Grant's Toronto Selected SciFi Thriller Short Posted: 11 Aug 2014 04:30 PM PDT A night of fun ends badly for a trio of bullied high school kids but not in the way you might think ... Rob Grant's Toronto International Film Festival selected short does what all good speculative fiction should do: Taking a premise that feels familiar on the surface and twisting it into a surprising direction to force the audience to ask uncomfortable questions. And it looks damn good while doing it.Three bullied high school seniors, Marshall, Leonard, and Dermot, are chased from winter formal and end up in a horrific car accident. In the aftermath, Marshall and Leonard discover they have the ability to 'reappear' completely healed after they die, while Dermot survives the accident but is paralyzed. Marshall tries to convince Leonard that they... |
Read An Exclusive Excerpt From Sam Fuller's Lost Novel BRAINQUAKE Posted: 11 Aug 2014 04:00 PM PDT In 1993, disillusioned with the film industry and living in France, Sam Fuller - director of I Shot Jesse James, The Big Red One and White Dog - set pen to paper with the tale of a brain damaged mafia bagman trying to help a dead colleague's widow. The result, titled Brainquake, would prove to be the final effort in Fuller's long literary career and yet would never actually make it into print, not until now. Titan Books are releasing Fuller's lost final effort on August 12th and we've got an exclusive excerpt for you below. Find your own copy here.------------------------ Word was spreading there was not just a gun but a bomb under the baby's ass. Barricades had been rushed in, hastily erected, barely... |
Posted: 11 Aug 2014 12:15 PM PDT It's a safe bet that the vast majority of regular readers of Twitch are very familiar with John Woo and Tsui Hark's A Better Tomorrow, the 1986 classic of Hong Kong action cinema. But it's an equally safe bet that far fewer are aware that A Better Tomorrow was a remake of a film which was made nearly 20 years earlier, the 1967 film The Story of a Discharged Prisoner. That film was made by Patrick Lung Kong, an important and immensely influential pioneer of Cantonese-language movies, who in addition to writing and directing 14 films in the 1960s and 1970s, was also a prominent actor whose career spanned from the late 1950's to the early 2000s. He was a major influence not only on Woo... |

Lima 2014 Review: REFUGIADO, A Truthful Account Of The Impact Of Domestic Abuse Posted: 11 Aug 2014 11:05 AM PDT No topic is taboo when it comes to movies, but some of them do require care. If certain subjects are not handled correctly, filmmakers can be accused of being exploitative and/or insensitive. It takes a deft directorial hand successfully work with sensitive material. Thankfully, Argentinian director Diego Lerman shows such a hand in his film Refugiado, from which tackles the thorny subject of domestic abuse in a mature and responsible way.In the film, young Matías (Sebastián Molinaro) arrives home from a birthday party, only to find his mother, Laura (Julieta Díaz) battered and bruised on the floor. The duo immediately flees across Buenos Aires, desperate to get away from their broken home, and the abusive husband, Fabián. Throughout their ordeal, Fabián is never seen, only heard on... |
THE GUEST UK Trailer Drops All Polite Pretenses Posted: 11 Aug 2014 10:30 AM PDT As much as I loved the first U.S. trailer for The Guest, I have to admit that the new British trailer kicks ass in a much more direct manner. Dropping all pretensions to polite behavior, the trailer immediately sets up Dan Stevens as a nasty dude who is involved in all kinds of nasty behavior. Is it because Stevens is much more widely known in the U.K. from Downton Abbey? Possibly. But even if you've never seen the period soap opera, I think this trailer gets down and dirty in a very invigorating manner. The Guest, directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett, opens in U.K. cinemas on September 5. Lucky bastards! Those of us in the U.S. must wait until September 17. ... |
Review: Football Doc WE COULD BE KING Tackles Big Issues Posted: 11 Aug 2014 10:02 AM PDT Sports docs are fickle things. Often they're little more than highlight reels, adding a bit of social drama in to make the story seem more relevant than just the drama tallied on the scoreboard. Yet when done right, the synergy between on-field competition and off-field struggle makes for truly compelling storylines. The long shadow of the likes of Hoop Dreams falls over We Could Be King, and it's a testament to Director Judd Ehrlich and his team that the film at least strives for this type of penetrating and insightful filmmaking. Tackling the challenges when two rival Philadelphia schools are merged after severe budget cuts, the film traces the Cougars as they learn their oft-drilled mottos - humility, hunger - and bring these precepts... |
Astron-6's THE EDITOR To Open Celluloid Screams: Sheffield Horror Film Festival Posted: 11 Aug 2014 09:33 AM PDT It looks like the festival run for The Editor is off to a flying start. Apart from its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, Celluloid Screams has just announced that the film will open their festival on Friday, October 24. Astron-6 members Conor Sweeney, Matt Kennedy and Adam Brooks are coming to the festival to present the film. They will also host a retrospective screening of Astron-6 short films. "Anyone who has attended Celluloid Screams in the past will know that we have an ongoing obsession with Astron-6, and we're extremely pleased to be opening our 2014 edition with their most ambitious film to date. As if this wasn't exciting enough, we're thrilled to be welcoming Adam, Matt and Conor in person to... |
MAPS TO THE STARS UK Trailer: David Cronenberg Points To Betrayal Posted: 11 Aug 2014 09:01 AM PDT With David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars preparing to launch in UK cinemas on September 26, a new (safe for work) trailer has been prepared. It's very similar to the red-band trailer that came out earlier this year, before the film debuted at Cannes. Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack, and Robert Pattinson star; Bruce Wagner wrote the screenplay. Our own Jason Gorber saw Maps to the Stars at Cannes and was not impressed: For the second film in a row, David Cronenberg has made a stinker. Yes, there were some bits in Cosmopolis that didn't suck, but it was hardly vintage DC. As I mentioned in my review for that other Robert Pattinson-in-a-limo movie, my biggest disappointment of late isn't that Cronenberg is trying new things... |
Twitchvision: Jason Gorber Talks Shark Week - JAWS And DEEP BLUE SEA Posted: 11 Aug 2014 08:30 AM PDT A minor diversion this week away from talk of turtles or tornadoes, in favour of talking about two of my favourite requisite caetusian creature features.Jaws needs little introduction, perhaps, but it's still well worth pointing out that this accidental masterpiece is a film that demands to be seen on a big screen (a reminder of my Blu-ray review of the film).Deep Blue Sea is Renny Harlin at his most effective, a terrific romp with the heart of B-movie schlock but some exquisite moments of suspense and surprise. We ran out of time to talk about The Life Aquatic, but you all know you should see it, perhaps even joining me in thinking it may be the best of Wes Anderson's output.Video embedded below... |
MCDULL: ME & MY MUM Trailer Will Delight Families And/Or Jaded Adults Posted: 11 Aug 2014 08:01 AM PDT Heading for release in Hong Kong on 1 October, McDull: Me & My Mum promises to delight family audiences and/or jaded adults. At least, that appears to be the intention. Anthony Wong, Sandra Ng, BabyJohn Choi, and The Pancakes are providing voices for the animated feature. Here's the official synopsis: Whenever the police encounter a difficult case, they will call on him to help to solve it; The FBI, Scotland Yard, all hire him as a consultant. He is Detective Mak, Bobby Mak, the private detective who is known to be the most famous detective since Sherlock Holmes. Bobby Mak used to be the kid who is called McDull. McDull is a slow kid, but his mum is shrewd. She transforms a 300-square foot apartment into a 2... |
Review: HEIGHTS (CUMBRES), A Subtle Character Piece Inspired By The Killer Of Cumbres Case Posted: 11 Aug 2014 07:01 AM PDT Inspired by a real life high-profile crime that happened in Monterrey, Mexico, Heights (Cumbres) is a film that in the wrong hands could have been a disaster, close to the sensationalist journalism that covered said case back in 2006. However, writer/director Gabriel Nuncio changed the facts and also approached the subject in a rather surprising - and very human - way. I'm even hesitant to write about the so-called "killer of Cumbres" (Cumbres being the name of a neighborhood in Monterrey), because to this day there is still controversy and theories surrounding the case, and that's clearly what Nuncio wanted to stay away from. He didn't want to make a film about Diego Santoy, the young man who is in prison right now for hurting... |
