Hamburg Filmfest 2014 Review: AUGUST WINDS Gets Your Whole Body Covered In Coca-Cola

Posted: 30 Sep 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Gabriel Mascaro's August Winds (Ventos de Agosto) is a love-dance of life and death. With a remarkable background in documentary filmmaking, the Brazilian Mascaro combines an observational nonfiction-styled movement and a poetical reflection on age, youth, flesh, and memory. There is no linear story told by the film. Instead a series of beautiful glimpses unfolds. One observes a young couple, Shirley and Jeison. She is young, sultry and hungry for life. When she is not working, making love, or thinking about making tattoos, she cares for her grandmother. In a scene full of sensual power and humour -- aspects that are true for the film as such -- she puts on some unusual lotion: Coca-Cola. Jeison, on the contrary, is fascinated by death. He does not...

Review: ANNABELLE Is Worse Than Being Given An Antique Doll As A Gift

Posted: 30 Sep 2014 03:00 PM PDT

It is understandable that Warner Brothers and New Line would want to continue the success of last year's The Conjuring. The period haunted house flick proved a surprise summer smash last year, grossing over $300 million worldwide. Annabelle focuses on another apparently true story from real paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, that of a possessed antique doll that is glimpsed briefly in James Wan's film.Rolling back the clock to the late 60s, when white bread suburban couples were getting spooked by news stories about the Manson Family and seriously considering locking their doors, Annabelle attempts to explain the origins of the malevolent porcelain presence in the most arbitrary, uninteresting way imaginable. For reasons never explained, Mia Gordon (Annabelle Wallis) has a thing for hideous antique...

Liam Neeson Will Kill Everyone In The Explosive TAK3N Trailer

Posted: 30 Sep 2014 01:33 PM PDT

Because Liam Neeson is the new Charles Bronson, he doesn't need a wife. Her only use is being disposed of, so he can exact his unique form of justice with his special set of skills avenging her death... At least that's what appears to be going on in the trailer for Tak3n (yup, that's the way they want us to write Taken 3 for now at least) - the latest in what is essentially a new Death Wish series. And I have no problem with that whatsoever.Liam Neeson is back as Bryan Mills for another bullet ballet, mofos. Famke Janssen and Maggie Grace also return, along with director Olivier Megaton and Forest Whitaker. I cannot wait....

U.S. Theatre Chains React To Netflix/IMAX CROUCHING TIGER Release Plans

Posted: 30 Sep 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Netflix, IMAX and The Weinstein Company announced their plans for a day-and-date release of the sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The plan is to release the sequel on Netflix and on IMAX screens simultaneously on August 28th, 2015. This news has clearly been met with some resistance by two of the three major theatre chains in the U.S. Both Cinemark and Regal released statements today. The first, and lengthy, statement comes from Regal spokesman Russ Nunley via THR."At Regal Cinemas, presenting movies on a grand scale is our promise to movie fans as we work to continually enhance the moviegoing experience. We recognize that there is a tremendous slate of films scheduled for release in 2015 and we couldn't be more excited by the prospects. While a...

New York 2014 Review: TIMBUKTU Is A Strong Condemnation Of Religious Extremism

Posted: 30 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Timbuktu, that faraway place, the end of the world, is an actual city in Northern Mali in Africa.  It was once a bustling trade town in sub-Saharan Africa and now famous for its fabulous architecture, libraries and scholars. Abderramane Sissako (Bamako) tells a tragic tale based on true events, taking place in this famed city. The film starts with traditional wooden African statues being used as targets in a target practice by the Islamic militants who just rolled into town. When Alain Resnais and Chris Marker made Even Statues Die, I don't think this was the image they had in mind: they were talking about re-appropriation of those artifacts being mass produced for Western consumption, losing its intended cultural significance, not being literally blown to pieces....

Opening: Jason Reitman's MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN

Posted: 30 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Jason Reitman is having an identity crisis. As one of the most prolific voices in his generation of filmmakers, Reitman has been a model of consistency, pumping out smart and snarky dramedies every two years from Thank You For Smoking to Young Adult (with Juno and Up in the Air in the middle, for those keeping score). Then came Labor Day, a nostalgic drama that felt like a real diversion for the director, and was widely seen as a misfire. Now Reitman is back only one year later instead of his customary two with Men, Women & Children. And while the film stars Adam Sandler, it again eschews the comedic current of his previous films for more of a social commentary on life in white...

U.S. Poster For Sion's WHY DON'T YOU PLAY IN HELL? Keeps It Pink

Posted: 30 Sep 2014 08:30 AM PDT

We're glad that Drafthouse Films did not mess about with the poster for their release of Sono Sion's cult hit Why Don't You Play In Hell? The mass of bodies. Two lone arms, one brandishing a camera, the other a katana sword. And they have kept the English title in that bright pink like the original Japanese. This is an attention grabber folks! The imagery is already iconic and if Drafthouse wanted to have their own shot at designing posters they have a bevy of Mondo artists at their disposal. But if you happen to stumble upon this poster at your local cinema and are left baffled as to what it is about then take a look at our coverage below! Sono's film has played at numerous festivals...

Contest: These FRANKENSTEIN'S ARMY Limited Prints Can Be Yours!

Posted: 30 Sep 2014 07:30 AM PDT

Hi everyone (and we do mean everyone, as this contest is worldwide). In the past, we've several times heralded Dutch director Richard Raaphorst's drawing skills. Especially the designs he made for the abandoned Worst Case Scenario project and the not-abandoned Frankenstein's Army film are, rightfully, the stuff of legends. Recently, for fun, he tried his hand at creating old-fashioned anatomical sketches for some of his creatures, and the results were spectacular. He further developed one sketch of the Mosquito monster from Frankenstein's Army, and with the help of artist Jurriaan Verdoold, he reworked that one into an art-deco poster. Now, both the sketch-version and the art-deco poster will be released in a limited print, and all of the art-deco posters will be signed by Richard....

Review: MEETING DR. SUN, A Playfully Poignant Coming-Of-Age Heist Flick

Posted: 30 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Yee Chih-yen, Taiwanese director of the much-celebrated Blue Gate Crossing, delivers a heartfelt, humorous and poignant coming of age story in Meeting Dr. Sun. Part high school drama, part adventurous heist flick, the film follows impoverished high-schooler Lefty (Zhan Huai-yun), and his desperate efforts to make some fast cash to pay off the class bully. Convinced he is the poorest kid at his school, Lefty schemes to steal and sell a bronze statue of Taiwanese political founder Dr. Sun Yat-sen, which he discovers discarded in the school storage room. Cajoling his classmates into helping him, Lefty soon discovers that another student, Sky (Wei Han-ting) has hatched a similar scheme. At first, Lefty confronts Sky, proclaiming himself the more destitute - and therefore more deserving - of the...

Vancouver 2014 Review: WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD, Gregg Araki's Nostalgic, Seductive Puzzle

Posted: 30 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Gregg Araki's latest offering, White Bird In A Blizzard, is set during the time period when Araki first began making films (1988-1991). Because of this, the sets and costumes are rendered with a loving nostalgia that never feels overly novel. It's an aesthetic that melds vintage Araki with the modern cadence of young actors like its star, Shailene Woodley, who was born just barely at the tail end of the narrative's span. Coupled with voiceover pop-prose - the screenplay is based on Laura Kasischke's novel of the same name - the result is endearingly odd.Woodley plays the teenaged Kat, a typical cinematic only child from a broken home. What makes her home broken, though, is stranger than usual: her mother, Eve, has seemingly up and...
