Toronto After Dark 2014 Review: HELLMOUTH is One Man's Existential Crisis

Ubiquitous character actor Stephen McHattie is always a pleasure to see up on the big screen. From supporting roles in Hollywood films like The Fountain, Watchmen and A History of Violence, to central performances in indie Canadian productions like the criminally underrated Pontypool, and now John Geddes' Hellmouth. At 67, there are entire lifetimes written on his face, even as the rest of him remains lean and spry. McHattie is a conundrum, seemingly young and ancient at the same time, and is perfect here as the reluctant Charlie Baker, caretaker of his own personal abyss. Given more than three quarters of the script to himself in the film, his quivering yet authoritative gravelly voice is beyond reproach. If all of the artifice in the green...

Morelia 2014: Iñárritu Talks BIRDMAN

Posted: 19 Oct 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Alejandro González Iñárritu took some days off from the filming of The Revenant - which is happening in Calgary, Canada - to present Birdman in Morelia. Unfortunately, none of the actors could make the trip due to several compromises, including the film's October 17 release in New York and Los Angeles. After the screening of Birdman - which for my money is Iñárritu's best since 21 Grams - the Mexican director offered a 50-minute press conference. He discussed several subjects, including casting Michael Keaton, his opinions towards Hollywood's blockbusters, and even Mexico's current state of violence after the student massacre in Iguala (he said violence is consequence of the much profound inequality problem). Read on for the highlights of the Birdman press conference at Morelia. The theme...

Morelia 2014: Twitch Picks 10 Must See Films

Posted: 19 Oct 2014 11:00 AM PDT

The 12th edition of the Morelia International Film Festival kicked off this past Friday, with the Mexican premiere of Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman. For the second year in a row, I'm in Morelia covering the fest for Twitch, so expect reviews, features, and some cool photos too. As usual, Morelia offers an immense lineup and nine days (October 18-26) are certainly not enough to watch each and every interesting title. Therefore I chose 10 essential films nobody attending Morelia should miss. The selection was based on the reviews and commentaries that my Twitch colleagues made during previous festivals, and omits the highly anticipated - and damn good - Birdman because its one and only screening at Morelia happened already and unfortunately was not for the general...

Marko Zaror To Play Colombian Superhero ZAMBO DENDE?

Posted: 19 Oct 2014 10:00 AM PDT

What next for Chilean martial arts star Marko Zaror? It would appear a move into the world of superheroes with a role in Colombian superhero effort Zambo Dende, with director Riccardo Gabrielli R tweeting out yesterday "@markozaror mañana nos vemos para otro gran proyecto! #ZamboDende"What is Zambo Dende? A Colombian comic book created by Nicholas Rodriguez, word began to circulate in December 2013 that Disney were interested in backing a feature film adaptation for the Latin American market, creating a local superhero for Spanish speaking audiences. Here's a synopsis for the comics:Latin America 1577; two different races, both deprived of their very own cultural legacy sharing the merciless scenario, down from Colombia to the south of Brazil, were confined as slaves to do hard jobs...

Book Review: MASAAKI YUASA SKETCHBOOK FOR ANIMATION PROJECTS

Posted: 19 Oct 2014 09:00 AM PDT

(Book titles don't get more truthfully descriptive than that...) One of the most distinctly unique talents working in animation, Japanese artist Yuasa Masaaki has had quite some coverage on the Twitch site. You can say we're big fans of his output, hell, last year I even wanted to give him a hundred million dollars just so he'd make a new film. Also, Peter van der Lugt and I interviewed him shortly after the release of his short Kick-Heart, and that conversation was one of my fondest memories of last year. So when I heard that in Japan they were going to release a thick book with sketches from all his animation productions, I pre-ordered the tome with haste. Now that it has arrived, I feel...

Review: DOCTOR WHO S8E09, FLATLINE (Or, Everything's Sideways)

Posted: 19 Oct 2014 08:00 AM PDT

As further proof this series is all about Clara, "Flatline" sees her become the Doctor while the man himself is stuck in a shrinking Tardis. The role reversal works fantastically, as putting Clara in the Doctor's shoes makes it clear to her just why he can't always care and worry about the people whose lives are in his hands. The responsibility on his shoulders is a big one, and it's often easier and simpler for him to focus on the puzzle rather than the people. At this point it's fair to say that, even if it is divisive, the current series of Doctor Who makes a solid claim as one of the most tonally assured and consistent in recent years. Aside from one or two early...
