Exclusive! Artsploitation Bringing LAPLAND ODYSSEY To The US On January 8 Posted: 14 Nov 2012 08:30 PM PST Hot on the heels of their acquisitions of the past two months, upstart indie distributor Artsploitation Films is at it again, this time announcing their sophomore home video release with Finnish comedy Lapland Odyssey. This isn't one I've seen, however, we have a pair of fair to positive reviews in the archive that you can check out via the links below.Greg Christie says: [Lapland Odyssey] is a beautiful film. Nearly every meticulously composed shot could be removed and framed on a wall. I can't think of a single American comedy featuring noteworthy or even noticeably crafted camerawork that's comparable. Generally speaking, slapstick buddy comedies are little more than medium reaction shots. The lush color palette and attention to lighting sets Odyssey far apart from the pack. ... |
Blu-ray Review: Nicholas Ray's WE CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN Shows How The Rebel Found His Cause Posted: 14 Nov 2012 08:00 PM PST Nicholas Ray is one of the most respected filmmakers in Hollywood history, and with a CV that includes films like Rebel Without a Cause, Johnny Guitar, In a Lonely Place, and many more, it's no surprise. What impresses me the most about Ray and his filmmaking, however, isn't the precision of his framing, the timbre of his dialogue, or the world-beating performances he's able to pull from his actors; what impressed me the most about Ray is that he didn't give a fuck about placating anyone. Nick Ray was in it for the art, he was in it to make statements, and he was in it to shine a light on an America suffering from a post-WWII identity crisis to show them just how fucked... |
Get Ready To Learn Your Alphabet With THE ABCs OF DEATH Red Band Trailer! Posted: 14 Nov 2012 06:00 PM PST Ladies and gentlemen, it's time to get literary. Yes, after a run on the festival circuit the first, very much red band, trailer for horror anthology The ABCs Of Death has arrived online. The premise of the project is simple. Twenty six directors with minimal financial resources but full creative freedom were given a letter and the request to construct an on screen death in a manner which connected to that letter. The results were mayhem.Directors involved in the project are: Kaare Andrews (Altitude), USA Angela Bettis (Roman), USA Ernesto Diaz Espinoza (Mirageman; Mandrill), Chile Jason Eisener (Hobo With A Shotgun), Canada Bruno Forzani & Héléne Cattet (Amer), Belgium Adrian Garcia Bogliano (Cold Sweat), Mexico Xavier Gens (Frontiers; Hitman), France Jorge Michel Grau (We Are... |
China Lion Launches Feng's 1942 in North America Posted: 14 Nov 2012 05:39 PM PST China Lion Film Distribution has announced it will release Chinese epic 1942 day-and-date with China on 30 November. The film, directed by box office golden boy Feng Xiaogang (Assembly, Aftershock, If You Are The One), and starring Hollywood A-listers Adrien Brody and Tim Robbins alongside a host of premiere mainland talent, is clearly aiming for some awards season action, despite China's official entry this year being Chen Kaige's Caught In The Web.Back to 1942 (as it will be retitled overseas) is based on the celebrated novel Remembering 1942, written by Liu Zhengyun, and details the devastating famine that ravaged Henan province while Nationalist troops clashed with invading Japanese forces during World War II. The cast is headed up by Xu Fan, Zhang Guoli, Chen Daoming,... |
RESOLUTION And A Long Road To Ithaca! Posted: 14 Nov 2012 02:00 PM PST The guys from Resolution are heading back to the state where this crazy ride began way back in April at that hoity toity festival in New York. This weekend though we will find Justin and Aaron at the Ithaca International Fantastic Film Festival where the common folks and freaks will convene for a weekend of cinematic madness. And as always, in preparation of their impending arrival at the screening this Saturday, November 17th, at 8pm, the lads have created another promotional video.I hope nothing happens to them on their way there...... |
Tom Hardy Takes The Lead In TOM CLANCY'S SPLINTER CELL Posted: 14 Nov 2012 01:17 PM PST Bane will be Sam Fisher. Having already set up Assassin's Creed as a feature film with Michael Fassbender to star, Ubisoft continues to work their library of video game titles for potential films now attaching The Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy to take the lead in a big screen adaptation of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell.Eric Warren Singer (The International, American Bullshit) is on board to adapt the game series into a film, one which will follow the adventures of black ops agent Sam Fisher. There is not yet a director attached, nor has the company found a studio home for the film, though - based on the process around Assassin's Creed - that certainly won't take long.... |
Grotesque Italian Comedy Dons SOMEONE ELSE'S FACE Posted: 14 Nov 2012 01:00 PM PST It seems very likely indeed that Italian director Pappi Corsicato has more than a passing interest in Terry Gilliam's Brazil, Crosicato's Rome-selected comedy Someone Else's Face (Il Volto Di Un'altra) riffing as mightily as it does on the plastic surgery sub plot of Gilliam's masterpiece. And that's just fine with me given that Someone Else's Face does so with as much style and distinctive personality of its own as it appears to do in the first trailer.Cineuropa describes the film like this:Bella (Laura Chiatti) is the attractive anchor for a television show on plastic surgery, in which her husband (Alessandro Preziosi) operates on patients live. She loses her job after the public tires of seeing her face. On her way home, she is caught in... |
IRON SKY Director's Next Revealed As JEREMIAH HARM. Watch The Concept Promo Now! Posted: 14 Nov 2012 12:00 PM PST It was a week ago today that Twitch brought you the first artwork from a proposed new project from Iron Sky helmer Timo Vuorensola. Yes, we knew he was already working on an adaptation of graphic novel I Killed Adolf Hitler but it turns out the Finn had something else on the boil and today we found out what it is. And, once again, he is turning to a graphic novel for source material.Using a formula much like the one followed by Iron Sky - meaning a heavy crowd funding and fan involvement emphasis - Vuorensola is developing an adaptation of Alan Grant and Keith Giffen's Jeremiah Harm with Tero Kaukomaa (Iron Sky), Arnold Rifkin (A Good Day To Die Hard) and Boom! Studios Ross... |
Watch A Clip From Ben Wheatley's SIGHTSEERS Posted: 14 Nov 2012 11:00 AM PST Already featured heavily in both trailers for the film, you can now watch a key sequence from Ben Wheatley's Sightseers in its entirety. If you've been following the film at all online you can probably guess the moment ... it's Tina and Chris out for a walk iwth their dog enjoying the wonders of nature. Wonders which a random passer by would very much like to keep free of animal excrement. Watch the complete clip below.Chris (Steve Oram) wants to show Tina (Alice Lowe) his world and he wants to do it his way - on a journey through the British Isles in his beloved Abbey Oxford Caravan. Tina's led a sheltered life and there are things that Chris needs her to see - the... |
Watch The Trailer For Fincher's HOUSE OF CARDS Now Posted: 14 Nov 2012 10:00 AM PST The Netflix foray into original content continues with the David Fincher produced, Kevin Spacey starring political thriller House Of Cards. Fincher also chips in on the directing front and though the premiere is not scheduled until February, Netflix is already offering up a trailer to subscribers. And it looks very, very good.Being tucked away up here in Canada I'm more than a little curious to see what the American appetite will be for shows like this and The Newsroom - which will dive into the just completed Presidential election as the basis for much of its upcoming second season - having just gone through a lengthy campaign season but there's plenty here to draw these eyes.Adapted from a British television series, House Of Cards also... |
Deliriously Over The Top Second Trailer For Russia's NIGHTINGALE THE ROBBER Posted: 14 Nov 2012 09:00 AM PST 'Moderation' is clearly a word that Russian director Yegor Baranov is unfamiliar with. No, Baranov is all about the excess - the gloriously over the top, positively baroque deployment of guns, hammers, explosions and possibly even a breast or two. Baranov, you see, is a boy and he likes boy things. Lots and lots of boy things. So do I.When the first trailer for Baranov's Nightingale The Robber crossed our desks back in October there was already plenty in there to raise the pulse and arch an eyebrow. But now a second effort has arrived, the guiding principal behind which appears to be 'more'. More guns. More wildly over the top characters. More explosions. More sledge hammer. This looks like just a wildly good time... |
Hey, Toronto! Michael Myers Stalks The Big Screen In HALLOWEEN This Saturday! Posted: 14 Nov 2012 08:00 AM PST Hey, Toronto! All your favorite slasher villains are coming to the big screen, projected on glorious 35mm, as part of the Twitch presented Birth Of A Villain series at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Keeping things rolling this Saturday, it's Michael Myers in John Carpenter's Halloween! The one-two punch of Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and John Carpenter's megahit Halloween in the 1970s put a new face to American horror movies. While previously the genre had its share of tortured, sympathetic anti-heroes (the Frankenstein Monster, the Wolf Man), this new breed of monster was a hero because of his villainy -- and the more gleefully he set about his gruesome work, the better. Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Chucky, Pinhead -- the names... |
Has Raimi Caught The Burton Disease? The Latest OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Trailer Has The Answer Posted: 14 Nov 2012 07:00 AM PST Can we be blunt? Let's be blunt. I hated the first trailer for Sam Raimi's Oz The Great And Powerful. It was wildly overcooked and overwrought stuff, enormously over reliant on dodgy CGI, littered with design work that came across like rejects from Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland, and featuring a performance from a James Franco looking so lost in this big spectacle that I feared it may very well spell the end of Franco's brief run as a viable leading man. More to the point - and more worrying, given that he is right smack in the middle of the target market for this film - when The Boy saw it on the big screen he hated it, too. After the high profile and very,... |
Kim Yun-seok to Star in New Film From SAVE THE GREEN PLANET Director Posted: 14 Nov 2012 06:00 AM PST Kim Yun-seok, Korea's most bankable star, is set to star in the sophomore feature by Jang Joon-hwan, whose sensational debut Save the Green Planet rocked the international film stage when it was released in 2003. It'll be a decade separating his two films by the time this is released, and while people have been wondering why he stepped away for so long -- though he directed a short in 2010 omnibus Camilia and is well-known as actress Moon So-ri's husband -- there is no doubt that many are thrilled to see his return to the big screen. Kim has been on something of a rampage since his star-making turn in 2008's The Chaser. He has followed Na Hong-jin's blistering debut with hit after hit, including... |
