During the 16th Hong Kong International Film & TV Market (FILMART) (March 19-22, 2012), the Hong Kong production and distribution company Universe announced the big new projects of Benny Chan, who has come back to the explosive modern action genre two years after CITY UNDER SIEGE, and also the Pang brothers (Oxyde and Danny), who signed a 10-year deal with Universe in 2009, and who since have been regularly delivering mostly genre movies like the action fantasy THE STORM WARRIORS and the horror film CHILD'S EYE. Mia Sin, distribution executive for Universe Films, tells us more about these directors' upcoming projects....

LOVE IN THE BUFF director Pang Ho-Cheung is one of the most interesting directors working in the Hong Kong film industry today. His incredible wit and undeniable talent are reflected in his varied filmography, which includes penning the story of Johnnie To's FULLTIME KILLER, producing Tsang Kwok-Cheung and Wan Chi-Man's acclaimed directorial debut LOVER'S DISCOURSE and directing films such as ISABELLA, the most WKW-like film not directed by Wong Kar-Wai himself. Of course, he also wrote and directed LOVE IN A PUFF, the popular 2010 word-of-mouth hit about a smoking couple. So it is pleasing to see that his good form is continuing with the PUFF sequel, LOVE IN THE BUFF. Like the original film, LOVE IN THE BUFF is a cleverly scripted romantic comedy....

Let Me Out is a film that explores a very primal fear of mine and does so with a fantastically dry sense of humor. The fear is that for all of my passion for film and alleged understanding thereof, if I were forced to make my own, I'd end up like a deer in the headlights. It is relatively simple for me to watch a film unfold onscreen and nitpick it to pieces, "This was good, that was not so good, overall: meh." However, when faced with the opportunity to make my own, I can only imagine the anxiety attacks that would ensue. This is the story of Let Me Out.Back in the 1950's, the French New Wave was established based upon the incredibly arrogant...

The next two weeks see the continuation of Kino's Redemption Blu-ray series with spine numbers 8 and 9, The Asphyx and Marquis De Sade's Justine. This is the second pair of non-Rollin British genre films titles to come from Redemption, and this batch keeps the quality coming with a pair of fun little films with a lot to offer. The Asphyx is an early 70's Hammer styled Victorian horror film with plenty of goofball fun mixed in with some supernatural/steampunk elements. Marquis De Sade's Justine is one of many adaptations of the Marquis' signature works on film, though perhaps not the most famous of the lot. While the two are divergent in their themes, they share a similar, though not identical period setting which makes...

A psycho sexual thriller very definitely not made with young audiences in mind - take that as your NSFW warning, the stills and trailer are very definitely of the red band variety - upcoming Singaporean picture Hotel 69 comes very much as a surprise. Surprising, first, that this sort of material would be coming out of Singapore at all and second that, having decided to go into this territory they've gone into it incredibly wholeheartedly. This holds nothing back. The storyline revolves around a psychopathic pimp taking revenge on a man by luring him into a depraved high end brothel where literally anything is available. The subject matter reminds me somewhat of recent Toronto International Film Festival selection Red Nights but the execution has a...

From first-time feature helmer, Jennifer DeLia, Billy Bates is a experimental narrative project chronicling the trials and tribulations many go through to create art. If the newly released trailer is any indication, our title character is going through those motions, and then some. Check out a full synopsis and the trailer below.BILLY BATES is the story of a young enigmatic artist (played by James Wirt) who faces his demons and through perseverance rises from the ashes of a broken soul. The layers of Billy's psyche are explored through an extensive interview done in documentary fashion infused with the dark and provocative images from Billy's past and present. Through fragmented memories of underground parties, inside an insane asylum, and on his rise to becoming a famous...

Perhaps best known as the writer of Xavier Gens' apocalyptic horror The Divide, Eron Sheean makes his feature directorial debut with Errors Of The Human Body. A scientific thriller shot on location at the largest genetics research facility in the world - Germany's Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics - Errors of the Human Body features an international cast including Michael Eklund (The Divide), Karoline Herfurth (Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer), and Tomas Lemarquis (Noi the Albino).Dr Geoff Burton takes up a position at a new institute in wintry Dresden, Germany. His contribution to a former colleagues important project, a human regeneration gene, has the potential to make something miraculous out of a personal tragedy that has haunted him for...

Jared Harris is just one of those guys, a solid character performer with a quiet air of menace and intelligence to such a degree that he often ends up stealing scenes without ever appearing to do very much. If he's in a film or a television show - particularly something with a genre edge, where he tends to flourish - you're guaranteed to have at least one good thing to look at. The folks at Hammer are smart enough to recognize this attribute and so they have cast Harris as the lead to their next feature, The Quiet Ones. Unfortunately they also hired the director of Quarantine 2, which is not exactly a ringing endorsement.HAMMER SIGNS JARED HARRIS TO STAR IN 'THE QUIET ONES'...

After playing the less-is-more game for so long the marketing team behind Ridley Scott's Prometheus have shifted into full on more-is-more mode in recent days with clips and stills rolling out on a regular basis. The latest offering comes from Fox Russia, who have just released a new international trailer for the film and while, yes, it's dubbed in Russian there's also some new material in there.Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Noomi Rapace and Guy Pearce star....

Let's be honest. Heroes are nice and all but it's the villains who are really interesting. Nothing makes a movie like a quality bad guy and my hunch is that even the most ardent "This reboot is pointless!" folk will drop their criticisms if The Amazing Spider-Man succeeds on the villain front. And, perhaps with that in mind, the new Japanese trailer for the film just happens to include a decent look at The Lizard. While they're still avoiding giving up a head on shot of the beast there's no doubt at all who is the major threat of the film and the effects that are revealed are pretty strong.Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) is an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents...

Mia Hansen-Løve's third film, Goodbye First Love is being released in New York and LA on 4/20. This is my interview with her, conducted last year during the New York Film Festival.Hansen-Løve, the 30-year old gifted French writer/director, made her film debut first as an actress at 17, in Late August, Early September directed by her future husband, Olivier Assayas. But it is her acute, clear-eyed depiction of growing pains in her own films that has been garnering critical acclaim (her second feature, Father of My Children, won the Jury Special Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival). Goodbye First Love tells that universal theme of young love with a great deal of insight and maturity. It is definitely...

Naoko Ogigami (Yoshino's Barber Shop, Kamome Diner) is one of the few female directors I truly appreciate, with Megane she holds a firm claim for the top spot. If you're looking for two hours of blissful escapism, a couch vacation like no other, you've found your film. Megane offers little, but what it offers is so pure and so relaxing that it's easily one of the best film in its genre. Make yourself a cocktail, put on something easy, sit back and just enjoy.Ogigami's films take a little preparation to enjoy. Make sure you're not looking for anything action-oriented (in the broadest sense of the word). Her films are not about events, not about "things happening" or about characters bearing their deepest emotions. Instead Ogigami's...
