NYIFF 2013 Review: AATMA Gives Even Its Villains A Little Bit Of Soul

Posted: 03 May 2013 11:03 PM PDT

Suparn Verma's latest film, Aatma, is one that's been on my radar for quite some time. I was more than a little bit disappointed when it didn't open stateside as expected, but I'm happy to see it get its moment in the sun as a midnight movie for the New York Indian Film Festival. The film is something we don't see nearly enough from Bollywood, which is straight ahead horror. This isn't a slasher or anything over the top gruesome like the torture porn we're so used to seeing here, Aatma is, instead, a supernatural thriller more along the lines of the old school ghost stories that no one really makes anymore. Abhay (acclaimed Indian character actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is a man on the edge. He...

Review: SHOOTOUT AT WADALA Is All Slo-Mo Aviators, Mustaches, And Blood.

Posted: 03 May 2013 09:45 PM PDT

It may have happened around the time of the second item number, I'm not quite sure. We'd just come back from the intermission when, seemingly out of nowhere, Priyanka Chopra appeared in an LED-lit bodysuit shaking her tail feathers like there was no tomorrow. The song was titled Babli Baadmash, and if you weren't a Bollywood fan before seeing Shootout at Wadala, you might be a bit perplexed as to what was going on. Leading into Babli Baadmash we'd already seen numerous assassinations, bloody prison shankings, and all manner of other ultraviolence on screen, so this peppy little number might seem out of place. However, it is the embrace of Bollywood convention mixed with the appreciation for World Cinema and the modern gangster mythos that...

Fresh Images From Miyazaki's KAZE TACHINU

Posted: 03 May 2013 06:00 PM PDT

Great news everyone! This summer the latest work from genius animation director Miyazaki Hayao, Kaze Tachinu, will receive its release in cinemas across the land of the rising sun. Surely a person like me could write on for ages on what it is about and why it is so interesting, but let's just forget about that. Don't you just want to see a trailer of it? Well sadly that is where the disappointment cuts in, as we don't have it yet. As it has been a kind of tradition, every time "Miya-san" brings the world a new masterpiece, its trailer premieres on Japanese television during their Golden Week. I would tend to say that week is called that way because of Miyazaki, but actually it...

Tribeca 2013 Review: RAZE, A Bloody and Brutal Female-Centered Action Spectacle Headlined by Stuntwoman Turned Thespian Zoe Bell

Posted: 03 May 2013 05:00 PM PDT

If you're the type of person who ever thought, "Man, I wish there was a movie filled with attractive women beating the shit out of each other," well, Raze has come along to answer your prayers. A brutal, relentless machine of neo-exploitation, Josh Waller's debut feature has been described as a take on the women-in-prison movie, but this is one without an ounce of prurience or campy winking at the audience. This is a film which takes itself utterly seriously, and a few of the performers give some surprisingly emotional heft to their portrayals. That is, when their characters aren't bashing each other to a bloody pulp. Raze makes no bones about what it sets out to do - to offer an exceedingly violent spectacle...

Abrams -- sit down for a chat with an unexpected interviewer, inspiring some good-natured lunacy. Check it out below, and then visit creator Daniele Rizzo for more....

Hot Docs 2013 Review: THE EXPEDITION TO THE END OF THE WORLD Asks Big Questions in Wide Open Spaces

Posted: 03 May 2013 11:01 AM PDT

Specifically, the eponymous End of the World is a place: The northern shores of Greenland that have been inaccessible due to ice-locked waterways, which now, due to changing climes, are open for a mere few weeks a year to such boats and folks willing to brave the moving ice floes. We go there with a Star Trek-like assembly of explorers, scientists and artists on a very photogenic three masted schooner that looks as if it could have been the same vessel Shackleton rode upon to the south pole, or that Dr. Frankenstein was a passenger upon in his quest for his own out-of-control creation. After watching The Expedition to the End of the World, which I have no doubt will be the best thing I see...

Now on Blu-ray: THALE Delivers Nordic Chills In HD

Posted: 03 May 2013 10:00 AM PDT

Norwegian mythical thriller Thale was recently released on Blu-ray and we're now finally able to see what all the hubbub was about. There was a lot of noise in horror circles about Thale presenting a new kind of mythology as yet unseen or heard of by English speaking fright fans, and the film got some early good press for its concept from many online sources, including ours. After making its international premiere at SXSW in 2012, the film was picked up and released by XLRator Media at the tail-end of April. Worth the hype? Read on...The first Twitcher to take a stab at Thale was Peter Martin from that US premiere in 2012, and his take was measured at best:Based on Norwegian folklore, Thale takes...

Aussie Filmmaker Andrew Morgan Uses Indiegogo In Reverse To Distribute Debut Feature

Posted: 03 May 2013 09:32 AM PDT

Andrew Morgan is an experimental filmmaker, with his feature debut Yes No Yes Yes Go a sort of documentary-fiction hybrid, so it's fitting that he's also decided to release the film in an experimental way. It's a variation of what we've seen before, releasing a film online for a pay-per-view fee, but instead of using an iTunes-style platform, Morgan has opted to cut out almost all middlemen and distribute the feature direct to his audience via Indiegogo. So instead of going to his Indiegogo page to pay money to support a film that might not come out for a year or two, interested viewers can either buy a basic HD download they can watch immediately or choose from a bunch of packages all the way up...

Kustom Kulture Doc FLAKE & FLAMES Now Available On DVD!

Posted: 03 May 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Dirk Behlau & Jesper Bram's Kustom Kulture doc Flake & Flames is finally on DVD and available with some really cool swag! This is a film I've been following with some interest as I spent a lot of my youth mixing in the rockabilly and punk crowds and there's a lot of crossover between those people and the kustom kulture fanatics. In fact, as I watch the trailer for the doc I see a lot of faces of both friends and former associates, which is admittedly pretty cool.  Here's the lowdown on the doc, followed by the specs on the disc and a link to the official store. Support independent home video!Flake & Flames is a fantastic adventure through the Kustom Kulture movement around the...

No Wires, No CGI, Just A Lot Of People Being Kicked In The Face.

Posted: 03 May 2013 08:00 AM PDT

You may not know Laurent Buson by name but if you are a fan of martial arts films there is a solid chance you have seen the screen fighter plying his trade on screen, most likely through a featured role in Michelle Yeoh star vehicle Silver Hawk or as one of the principal villains in Gareth Huw Evans' Merantau. But outside of those larger features Buson is also part of an action film collective called Z Team, and after a string of short films they have put together their first feature, The Price Of Success. The plot is fairly standard stuff, a story of four friends - all of whom are skilled martial artists - forced to fight at the whim of a villain who...

North Korea, Espionage and Slapstick in Main Trailer for SECRETLY GREATLY

Posted: 03 May 2013 06:02 AM PDT

Director Jang Chul-seo is about to reveal his sophomore film following his incendiary debut Bedevilled. But anyone looking for more of the same would be advised to temper their expectations. Secretly Greatly, coming out June 5th in Korea, follows three top North Korean operatives, barely out of diapers, as they are posted undercover in the South and begin to lead real lives as the teenagers they should be. Time goes by and eventually their orders from across the border do come, but have their loyalties remained?Jang, a former protege of Kim Ki-duk, has made the much-coveted leap to commercial filmmaking. Instead of the hard-hitting and skillfully crafted revenge thriller he produced the first time around, here he has been handed the reigns of a genre hopping...
