3 New ONLY GOD FORGIVES Clips Give The People What They Want

Posted: 30 Apr 2013 02:30 AM PDT

The people in this case being those who didn't wish Drive was more like The Fast and The Furious. Indeed, here are three new clips from Nicolas Winding Refn's Cannes-selected Only God Forgives. While I don't want to spoil even the clips for those who want to wait for the movie -- which, to be honest, I wish I had done -- I can report that there will be fetishistic, brutal violence, lots of neon-drenched style and many shots of Ryan Gosling looking around enigmatically and not talking. There don't seem to be heavy spoilers, but there's no context either. Those who can't wait, have a look below:...

Sharmill Films Acquires Joss Whedon's MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING For Australia

Posted: 30 Apr 2013 12:45 AM PDT

While the 2013 theatrical release date is yet to be announced, it is great news to confirm that Australians will be privy to Whedon's take on the Bard's play Much Ado About Nothing this year thanks to Sharmill Films.Joss Whedon's (The Avengers, 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer', Cabin in the Woods) acclaimed modern re-telling of the Bard's comedic play stars Whedon film and television regulars Amy Acker ('Buffy', 'Angel'), Clark Gregg (The Avengers), Fran Kranz (Cabin in the Woods) and Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Serenity).Using the original text, adapted by Joss Whedon, the story of sparring lovers Beatrice (Acker) and Benedick (Denisof) offers a dark, sexy, funny and occasionally absurd view of the intricate game that is love. The film premièred at the Toronto International Film Festival and Whedon's take...

One of the most acclaimed Australian films of last year and one of my favourite films from anywhere in the world in 2013 (see my end-of-year list on Twitch), Amiel Courtin-Wilson's Hail is now out on DVD in Australia and New Zealand. Fresh from a Melbourne jail, Dan is reunited with the love of his life, Leanne. Dan and Leanne celebrate, and when surrounded by friends he announces he has resolved to go straight. Believing he can change with Leanne by his side, Dan finds a job and slowly builds a new life. Unforeseen circumstances intervene and Dan, having lived for years on the verge of excess and violence, is inexorably lured back to crime to survive. Thanks to the fine folks at Madman Entertainment, we have...

Well-Timed GREAT GATSBY Extended TV Spot Joins Promo Avalanche

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 05:01 PM PDT

While most here at Twitch appear to be hungrily anticipating Pacific Rim, I have the same fervour for Baz Luhrmann's take on The Great Gatsby, and am eating up every morsel of promo in the lead up to its May release. Which is good because there's a lot of it, and I'm really hungry.Check out the latest super-classy extended spot for the film below. While fans of the novel know the tale well, the arc of the story is becoming clear for those unfamiliar with it. I admire the way they've teased it out slowly while still holding a lot back.Plus, now this photo of Fassbender makes so much more sense....

Hugo's Picks From the 2013 Sydney Film Festival

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 04:00 PM PDT

The Sydney Film Festival is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, and the good news is that it will be here in just over a month's time! As a Sydneysider, I am particularly proud of the Sydney Film Festival because it is so vibrant and energetic, so full of good movies including hidden gems that I have never even heard of, and above all, it is the film festival for the City of Sydney. It is our film festival. Earlier this month, 27 of the 160 films in this year's packed program were announced. Judging by these first titles, one can already tell that the full program will be nothing short of spectacular. "These are some of the best productions from all over the world that we have...

Second Teaser For Korean Gorilla Baseball Comedy MR. GO

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 02:30 PM PDT

The chances of Korean sports comedy Mr. Go successfully winning over the hearts and minds of the family-friendly crowd rest squarely on the broad shoulders of the Baseball-playing Gorilla, a CG character created through director Kim Yong-hwa's own studio Dexter Digital. The attempt to fully realize a believable gorilla as the main star in a 3D digital film without the luxury of a Hollywood-size blockbuster budget has proven to be major challenge for a Korea production and was long considered too risky to undertake. Well, a second teaser has arrived that showcases more actual footage with the digital VFX and it looks like they hit it out of the park in achieving their technical goal and defying expectations. The cast include Xu Jiao (Starry Starry Night,...

Review: ORPHAN BLACK S1E05, CONDITIONS OF EXISTENCE (Or, The More They Talk The Less Interesting This Show Is And This Week They Talk A Lot)

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 01:30 PM PDT

At this, the half way mark of Orphan Black, it is easy to see what the two primary weaknesses of the oft-entertaining (and hugely so) show are. First, with so much effort put into the Sarah and Beth characters many (read: all) of the support players are underdeveloped to varying degrees, some of them (read: Vic and Paul) critically so. Second, the producers seem to be operating under the assumption that the audience will find the story much harder to follow than it actually is without long stretches of exposition explaining things that the audience has - in actual fact - already figured out or would do so quite easily if you just showed them something rather than grinding all the action to a halt...

New PACIFIC RIM Wondercon Trailer Shows Robots Beating Monsters With Boats

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 01:05 PM PDT

I admit I'm a total neophyte when it comes to most Japanese-style monster movies (I had to look up Kaiju to remember what the hell the subgenre is called...) I'm vaguely aware about words like "Macross", and Robotech was this weird cartoon on when I was a young adolescent that never seemed as fun as Voltron. Still, based on evidence to date, I think I'm going to like Pacific Rim a whole lot. Plus, it looks like a robot dude is going to beat the shit out of a monster with a boat. "That's kind of awesome", sayeth my inner 12 year-old.Launched on the film's Facebook page, this is a trailer originally cut for Wondercon, where GDT made the announcement, "I think it's time for...

Second Teaser For Japanese Remake Of Eastwood's UNFORGIVEN

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 12:00 PM PDT

You ready for another taste of what happens when a key work from one of the most American of all American directors is transposed into another country? Well, here you go with a second teaser for the Lee Sang-il directed Japanese remake of Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven with Ken Watanabe in the lead. The action is now set in late 1800's Hokkaido with Watanabe playing a long retired samurai drawn back into action by the combination of poverty and a large bounty. Production values on this look fabulous - as you'd expect, Watanabe is a huge star in Japan and very selective about his projects - and you can feast your eyes below....

Photo Gallery for Donnie Yen's ICEMAN COMETH 3D

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 11:30 AM PDT

Donnie Yen is currently shooting his new film Iceman Cometh 3D, which is a remake of Yuen Biao and Yuen Wah's 1989 action flick. The story spans from China's Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) to modern day Hong Kong. It is being shot in 3D and easily one of Donnie's most ambitious projects to date. The production has not been easy; however, as difficulties such as the failure to get government approval to film some scenes on Tsing Ma Bridge and challenges associated with shooting in 3D have led to a prolonged shoot and escalating production costs, with some reports saying the budget of the film has already doubled from what was initially planned. It appears that the part that is based in Hong Kong has finally been...

The SHE WOLF Prowls Argentina

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 11:00 AM PDT

The She Wolf (Mujer Lobo) is prowling the streets of Buenos AIres - or, more accurately, it's bars and nightclubs - looking for prey in the third feature from Tamae Garategu. The film tracks a sexual predator preying upon lonely men - seducing them, bringing them home and killing them - until she comes across someone she cannot kill. It's exploitation fare to be sure but there's always something intriguing about seeing this sort of material handled from the female perspective and early word is that the film is very, very strong. Take a look at an early teaser below....

John Noble Joining Hugo Weaving In THE MULE

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 10:30 AM PDT

It was just this past Friday that we first caught wind of The Mule, the Leigh Whannel and Angus Sampson scripted crime thriller to be directed by first timer Tony Mahony with the producer of Chopper also on board.  The occasion at the time was word that Hugo Weaving had stepped into the lead role and while nothing is yet 'official' Twitch has heard that Weaving will be joined by fellow Lord Of The Rings alum John Noble - best known as Walter Bishop on Fringe, though he also played Denethor in the Peter Jackson helmed fantasy epics - in a support role. Little is being said about the plot thus far, only that it revolves around a drug mule (presumably Weaving) arrested while on...

IFFR 2013 Review: IXJANA Injects Giallo-like Color And Weirdness Into Film Noir.

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 10:00 AM PDT

(If I did THIS much sex, booze and drugs together on one evening: yep, unfortunately I'd forget stuff as well...) Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski is no stranger to the International Film Festival Rotterdam, which even honored him a few years ago with a retrospective of his works. But this year it was his son Michal's turn to appear in the spotlight over here. Together with his brother Józef he scored a bit of a cult-hit back in 1993, with their debut film The Hollow Men, and he now presented his second film Ixjana. Listed in the catalogue as a "Psychological thriller drama by the Skolimowksi Jr. brothers (which) does not shy away from the occult", it had me intrigued. So what did I think of...

Fresh Stills and Production Photos for Johnnie To's BLIND DETECTIVE

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 09:30 AM PDT

Following the recent commercial success of Drug War, director Johnnie To's hot streak looks to continue with his new film Blind Detective. The film reteams Hong Kong superstars Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng, who have previously appeared in a number of To's romantic comedies and massive Hong Kong box office hits such as Needing You... and Love on a Diet. The difference this time is that the new film is a crime thriller. Some new stills and production photos for the film have just been released, and judging by the images, Blind Detective looks to be another intense and expertly crafted thriller from the master director. ...

Kitamura Says He's Bringing Sakaguchi Back For VERSUS Sequel In 2014

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 09:00 AM PDT

This should be great news for any fans of Versus, the frenetic, low-budget, crazy action film from Japan in 2000 that has become a cult favorite over the years: Director Kitamura Ryuhei will be making a sequel some time next year. He made the announcement when he was on stage promoting his new Hollywood film No One Lives. Kitamura also expressed his confidence that Sakaguchi Tak, star of the original Versus (and other action films like Shinobi and Yakuza Weapon), will appear in the sequel. "The lead actor (Sakaguchi Tak) is retired, but I'll get him to make a comeback. He'll do it if I do it," Kitamura commented. ...

Golly. Final FAST AND FURIOUS 6 Trailer Blows Stuff Up Real Good.

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 08:45 AM PDT

How's this for something that would have seemed unimagineable to say just a few years ago but now seems abundantly obvious: Justin Lin is not coming back to direct Fast And Furious 7 and that's a bad thing. It's bad because Lin has taken a franchise that had its beginning as the guiltiest of guilty pleasures and reinvented it as arguably the most reliable of all American action vehicles, embracing the ridiculous elements and elevating them to high entertainment while also reinventing himself as the absolute finest director of vehicular mayhem on the planet.Yeah, they're big and dumb and totally, 100% adolescent wish fulfillment and they do it so well that they've become pretty damn awesome. All of which to say: Here's the final trailer...

Hot Docs 2013 Review: WE ALWAYS LIE TO STRANGERS

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 08:00 AM PDT

The title is a mouthful, but is a entirely appropriate and poetic link to the film's subject matter, the bizarre Vegas-in-the-Ozarks refuge that is Branson, Missouri.Nestled in the heart of hillbilly country, the town of 10,000 plays home to millions of visitors a year looking for some heartland-style entertainment. The doc does a great job in finding a wide variety of representative Bransonians that entertain the busloads. It's here that the names Presley and Lennon have a different context than they might on the coasts, where bib panted yokels joke about Democrats and the 5-6-7-8 of song and dance numbers ring out to horrendously orchestrated takes on Village People hits.Directors AJ Schnack and David Wilson manage to capture some of the inherent beauty of the...

Review: GAME OF THRONES S3E05, KISSED BY FIRE (Or, Robb And Tyrion Lose Their Grip On Things To Wildly Different Results)

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 07:30 AM PDT

Oh, Robb Stark. You're just not so good at this King thing, are you? A good strategist on the field of battle? That's the rumor, though we've seen no sign of it for quite some time, but the whole leadership / motivation / keeping people in line thing? Nope, not so much. It's a Stark heavy episode of Game Of Thrones this time out and while bastard child Jon Snow rather enjoys himself and Arya gets grumpy, Sansa demonstrates once again that George RR Martin doesn't think particularly highly of teenage girls - this one in particular proving incredibly stupid AGAIN - while Robb proves to be lousy at everything other than righteous indignation while learning that righteous indignation doesn't get you very far at...

First Footage of SNOWPIERCER Revealed in New Behind The Scenes Teaser

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 06:30 AM PDT

We've been waiting for a while and now the first footage from Snowpiercer has finally surfaced in the form of a mini teaser/making of video (without English subtitles for the moment). We don't get a huge look at the film but its scale and ambition are evident, and technically the film looks stunning as we see a number of complicated behind the scenes setups and large scale fight sequences.Sadly Snowpiercer was not finished in time for Cannes but it is still aiming for a summer release. Given the cast (Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Song Kang-ho, Ed Harris, John Hurt and many more), director Bong Joon-ho (Memories of Murder, The Host), producer Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Stoker), a strong sci-fi premise and now our first actual glimpse...
