After news broke yesterday that rising-fast Australian director Justin Kurzel would direct Michael Fassbender as Macbeth for the producers of The King's Speech, we heard the reveal of who would play Lady Macbeth wasn't far away. Well, turns out that day is today, with Screen Daily breaking the news that Black Swan herself Natalie Portman will play the scheming wife. The film, which will be an Australian-UK co-production, is set to shoot later this year. Help TODD AND THE BOOK OF PURE EVIL Get Animated!

Posted: 30 Apr 2013 01:30 PM PDT

If you are already familiar with horror-comedy television series Todd And The Book Of Pure Evil then you are already familiar with one basic fact: After hitting a cliffhanger ending in Season Two the show was not renewed and that ending has never been resolved. If you are not already familiar with Todd And The Book Of Pure Evil then you are no doubt asking yourself, "How can I have possibly missed a show with such an awesome title and why aren't there more Todds on television?" Followed by "How can I catch up on such a thing and get to that aforementioned cliffhanger?" The answer to that second question is Netflix but the cliffhanger need not be the end ...You see, the creators know...

MSPIFF 2013 Review: 80 MILLION Is A Cerebral Cat-And-Mouse

Posted: 30 Apr 2013 01:00 PM PDT

80 Million, Poland's 2012 candidate for Best Foreign Language Film, teases of a bank heist but delivers a cerebral, dialogue driven cat-and-mouse. The dramatic retelling of the anti-communist groundswell in 1980s Poland delves head first into the politically and socially tumultuous era to the point where it may leave some international audiences behind. Waldemar Krzystek, for better or worse, doesn't pander to international audience with watered-down or simplified maneuverings and instead keeps the story, based on true events, firmly entrenched in complex political manipulations of the moment, some of it lost on those of us less familiar with the where, when, and how. The "where" is Wroclaw Poland and the "when" is 1981, one year after the establishment of Solidarity, the trouble-making trade union...

Now on DVD: MANBORG Brings Retro-Future Sci-Fi Into Your Home!

Posted: 30 Apr 2013 12:00 PM PDT

I believe my Manborg review from Fantastic Fest 2011 was the first one published online, and I'm republishing here with notes on Dark Sky's DVD release out today.Do you remember when Mortal Kombat first hit arcades?  I do.  We were all so impressed with the photo-realistic characters who all had crazy violent finishing moves.  Of course, twenty years down the line, those graphics are incredibly dated, even though the game has lived on in some form or another for much of the time between now and then.   No matter how crappy Mortal Kombat looks today, it still holds a place of high esteem in memories of my younger years for being a trailblazing game.  If you still feel that way about MK, you're likely to...

The AXE GIANT Comes A-Chopping.

Posted: 30 Apr 2013 09:30 AM PDT

Paul Bunyan's pissed off and he's not going to calm down until he's chopped himself an Estevez. These are the basics of what you need to know about the upcoming Axe Giant, a pulpy B flick featuring Joe Estevez (brother of Martin Sheen) in a supporting role.A dark twist to the popular children's fairytale, kids at boot camp discover the legend of Paul Bunyan is shockingly real. Can they escape the wrath of this giant axe wielding maniac, or will Bunyan chop down everyone in his path?Sheen's resemblance to his more famous brother is really quite uncanny and it lends a particular sort of lunatic sheen (ha, ha) to this thing. Take a look at the trailer below.Axe Giant screens as part of the Texas...

Witness The Perilous Life Of The Fast Food Mascot

Posted: 30 Apr 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Ah, the feathered life of the fast food mascot. It's hot. It's sweaty. And I don't even want to think about what it smells like inside the suit. Which makes it prime fodder for film, hence Filipino directors Chris Costello and Mihk Vergara tackling an adaptation of independent comic book Ang Maskot.Based on the independent comic of the same name. A disgruntled surly fast food employee gets stuck in his costume for a day when hjinks inevitably ensue. He'll go through muggings, screaming children and maybe even love before he can finally free himself of his costume and all that goes with it.Take a look at the teaser below....

Euro Beat: Jo Nesbø Brings OCCUPIED To TV, Plus Paris Gets A Drive-In Movie Theater

Posted: 30 Apr 2013 06:00 AM PDT

If you don't know the work of Norwegian author Jo Nesbø, you will very soon. Not only has a U.S. adaptation of his wacky thriller Headhunters (already adapted quite well in Norway by Morten Tyldum) been confirmed, but a U.S. version of The Snowman, featuring his recurring detective Harry Hole is also in development, though sadly no longer with Martin Scorsese directing as previously reported. And now, news has broken that Nesbø's work is coming to the small screen as well.  Erik Skoldbjaerg, director of Insomnia (the one Christopher Nolan remade) will be working with the Swedish production house responsible for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo films to create a ten-episode series called Occupied, based on an original idea by Nesbø. Here's the pitch,...
