Review: SKINS S7E04, PURE: PART 2 (Or, Cassie's Story Ends On A Somewhat Happier Note As She Finds Clarity)

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 09:30 PM PDT

Last week's episode of Skins was all about Cassie feeling lost, and it seems for a moment that the second part of "Pure" is about her finding her calling as a fashion model. Things aren't quite that simple, though. Cassie may see that she makes a good model but it doesn't complete the puzzle; the episode, rather interestingly, doesn't pick up the thread it establishes and just leaves us to wonder what she does next. What does bring her clarity is patience; she sees that her dad needs time to move on from her mother's death and her own experiences here bring her some level of happiness through what she learns from them. The idea of Cassie simply finding a bit of optimism is a tough message...

Donnie Yen Gets Battered And Bruised In First SPECIAL ID Trailer

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 07:40 PM PDT

Well, hello, stranger. It's nice to have you back.It was 2005 when Hong Kong actions tar Donnie Yen triggered a major career resurgence with SPL (released in the US as Kill Zone), an exhilarating martial arts crime film starring Yen as a cop on the trail of a notorious gangster. It was dark, gritty, punishing stuff and when Yen followed it closely with the similarly minded Flashpoint it appeared he had fully embraced a life as a contemporary action star. And then he more or less stopped making those sorts of movies, moving instead into period pieces of various sorts and while there are certainly some dandies in the ensuing years that gritty, modern feel was very much missed and the hit:miss ratio started to skew...

Indie Beat: Ben's Favorite Indies Of 2013 (Thus Far)

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 05:00 PM PDT

As I was compiling this list, an alternate subtitle that came to mind was "Indies On Parade". I'm still not sure if that means anything, but I like the energy behind it and hope that crackle transfers over to this list in full. What you'll find here are a near dozen independent films that I've taken a strong liking to over the course of 2013 thus far. There are no real hard and fast rules to this list other than the definition of 'indie film' to me means no wide released films (duh), with budgets not jumping over a few million, and preferably staying under a million. In this list-making, styles, genres, spoken languages are inconsequential. Some of the films featured have had releases in...

Outfest 2013: BEFORE YOU KNOW IT Is A Deliberate And Rewarding Exploration Of Age

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 01:00 PM PDT

"Before You Know It... you're old." Don't worry. I'm not giving too much away. The line is spoken in the title sequence of PJ Raval's new portrait of gay men in their 70's, and it turns out to be a better synopsis than you'd think. This is not a documentary about sexuality, the history of gay struggle or any type of elderly subculture. It's a humanistic study of three very different men as they slowly approach death. And I do mean slowly. Ty, Robert 'the Mouth,' and Dennis are all intelligent men who have learned to pace themselves in their old age. Kyle Henry's editing mimics the careful, deliberate pace of the seniors' lives. While this can occasionally be tedious (there are several thrift...

The Great Dennis Farina Has Died

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 12:30 PM PDT

Dennis Farina, a former Chicago police officer turned actor, has died. His representative told the Associated Press that he "died Monday morning in a Scottsdale, Ariz., hospital after suffering a blood clot in his lung." Farina served in the Chicago Police Department, reportedly for 18 years. His first acting appearance came in Michael Mann's Thief in 1981. Mann cast him as Jack Crawford in 1986's Manhunter, but his big breakthrough came as Lt. Mike Torello in TV's Crime Story. Mann served as executive producer, which was co-created by Chuck Adamson, who had been one of Farina's police partners. That show was the first time I saw Farina, who exhibited crisp command and absolute authenticity as the head of Chicago's Major Crimes Unit in the early...

Fantasia 2013: A Rough Guide to Parsing Miike's Hybrid Thriller SHIELD OF STRAW

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 12:00 PM PDT

As I was watching Miike Takashi's police thriller Shield of Straw during its opening night presentation at Fantasia, I started to wonder if the director of dozens of gonzo filmic insanities had finally succumbed to the temptation of making a polished, Hollywood-style blockbuster. That's similar to the alarm bells rung by our own Brian Clark when the film debuted at Cannes. In his review, he discussed some of the "many ways in which [it] falls short of being the knockout that it could have been." Among other things, he asked, "What has happened to Miike Takashi? The man who was once able to inject even the most cliche genre stories with wackiness, visual pizzazz and spontaneity seems totally on auto-pilot here." It's a fair point....

Guanajuato 2013 Review: CASI TREINTA (ALMOST THIRTY) Is A Dull And Forgettable Romantic Comedy

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 11:00 AM PDT

The Mexican movie Casi Treinta (Almost Thirty) had its world premiere on Sunday, July 21 at the 2013 Guanajuato International Film Festival. The director and the cast were there to walk the red carpet and introduce the film. One of the actors said, with a sort of "enough with the BS" attitude, that Casi Treinta is a commercial feature. We are here to entertain and to make money, period. So, please, do not over think. That was basically the actor's message, and while I always love a good piece of entertainment, Casi Treinta horribly fails its attempt to be that. On the other hand, I don't see how could it be a commercial failure when it hits Mexican cinemas in October. But let's face it,...

Check Out Mondo's 22 Comic Con Posters and New Studio Ghibli Limited Edition Vinyl

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 09:00 AM PDT

The last weekend was a busy one for Mondo fans and collectors attending San Diego Comic Con. The famous Austin-based art boutique released just under two dozen different items during the Con, including Martin Ansin's gorgeous posters for Elysium (that we covered here). Most of these prints were SDCC exclusives or sold out at the event, so expect to toss out some big bucks on the secondary market if you're planning on acquiring one or more. The good news is that Mondo announced an online sale of their new vinyl release of Studio Ghibli Kokyo Kyokushu featuring amazing work by the one and only Tyler Stout. These will go online Friday July 26 - at a random time, as always - and shouldn't take too long...

Twitchvision: Jason Gorber Talks ACT OF KILLING, ONLY GOD FORGIVES, RED 2, And More

Busy week, with lots of decent (and a few not-so-decent!) releases. One of the most important docs of the last decade, The Act Of Killing finally opens wide this week, after screening last September at the Toronto International Film Festival.Ryan Reynolds does his thing in both Turbo and the (egregious) R.I.P.D., while the gang's back in Red 2, Gosling and Winding Refn team up for Only God Forgives, and Blackfish turns its spotlight on the circus-like environment of Seaworld. Fantasia 2013: JACK ATTACK Whets The Horror Comedy Appetite In 8 Minutes

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT

I missed Fantasia Fest's two opening night features, but providence at the festival's opening night party festivities saw to it that a USB with the short film that preceded The Conjuring ended up in my possession. The buzz from those that had just seen it was good, the runtime was ideal -- hitting the short film runtime sweet spot of 8 minutes -- and I wanted a hit of cinema before I hit the hay. It turned out to be quite the solid entry into the pantheon of seasonal horror/comedy parables.Jack Attack sees a precocious young boy doing a pumpkin themed 20 questions routine to his Jack'O'Lantern-carving babysitter one Halloween. Once the innocuous question "do pumpkins feel pain?" is asked, it isn't too hard to gauge the...

Hollywood Beat: Lessons From THE CONJURING, R.I.P.D., THE ACT OF KILLING, ONLY GOD FORGIVES, And More

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Are there any lessons to be learned from The Conjuring winning -- and R.I.P.D. losing -- this weekend's box office? Oh, just the same ones that were offered up last weekend, and many weekends before that: K.I.S.S.: Keep It Super-cheap, Stupid....
